To Woo a Wife by Carole Mortimer (HP 2039)

challenge_name:

Not that wonderful.  Good characters, some funny moments, but full of cliches and too much ice cold distance put up between the hero/heroine.  Not very overt in the romance/desire points…  I think the author was too focused on making the H/H find a tame love (to make up for the horrible marriage she had with her dead husband).  I don't think we ever FELT the emotions of the heroine (or hero)... I couldn't get swept away because it felt like the heroine was so cold she wasn't experiencing passion.

Rating: 2/5 stars, this book was cold, something just didn't work in this book.  Read other books by Carole Mortimer, she's done much better: i.e. The One and Only

War of Love by Carole Mortimer (HP 1727)

Holy crap this was awesome!  I was choking with laughter at times.  Frigging amazing writing.  Hilarious.  Great tension between the hero/heroine, very love/hate!  Loved it.  He thinks she's a trampy "bunny girl" because he saw her dressed in a skimpy bunny suit, while hostessing at his store's party.  He thinks she's bent on seducing his old uncle, but the uncle is in fact in love with her mother!  They have angry passionate sex.  The jealousy that starts to grow is great.  Yum.

Rating: 4.5/5 stars, a little bit 80s, but it's a KEEPER for me because it was SO hilarious and passionate.

Subtle Revenge by Carole Mortimer (HP 651)

challenge_name:

Nice book.  She seeks revenge on the son of the man who drove her father to suicide.  It backfires and she falls in love with him.  Lovely passion and romance between them as they get drawn together through the revenge plot.  Yummy.  The only possible negative is that the male is not an alpha male in the truest sense: he never exerts pressure, gets really angry, he's pretty calm and sure that he loves her.  I liked at the beginning when he first met her how insistent he was that he would marry her, not even knowing her, very nice.  Warm and cuddly.

Deceit of a Pagan by Carole Mortimer (HP 365)

challenge_name:

She is an aunt but pretends to be the mother when she meets the baby's uncle.  It causes a lot of problems for them: he can't get past the fact that she was in love with his brother and had his baby, she can't give in to their passion because he'll discover she's a virgin and take the baby from her.  It's a good story and the passion is good.  It's a little unbelievable and overly dramatic at times (I didn't like the hero's attitude towards her when he believed she wasn't a virgin, he treated her as if he couldn't have sex with her unless she was innocent).

Rating: 3/5 stars, it was ok except the hero was overbearing on the virginity issue, as if her virginity magically fixed their relationship.

Savage Interlude by Carole Mortimer (HP 340)

challenge_name:

The ultimate love/hate relationship!  Wonderful banter and fighting between the hero/heroine.  He thinks she's a gold digger using sex as a bargaining tool, but she's really innocently waiting for marriage because she was illegitimate and sex-without-marriage scares her.  He's jealous of the other men in her life (James St. Just, her secret brother, who is a movie star and must be kept secret, and Alan the non-threatening guy who wants to marry her).  Jealousy and sexual obsession lead them into marriage.  Awesome thrilling, totally absorbing book that has your heart pounding.

Rating: 5/5 stars, this is a very old HP but it's a keeper for me, it was just incredibly passionate.
