Lee Palmer is happy enough working as assistant editor at Lively Lady magazine and visiting her widowed mother and crippled brother on the weekend when new owner Adam Boothe takes over to give the magazine a sexy new makeover, including a new name, New Lady.

Claudie Thorburn is an aspiring actress working as secretarial support at a hotel; things are going well for her except with regard to acting as she hasn't got a call for an audition in quite some time, but she lives rent free with her sister and French chef brother in law in exchange for working at the family restaurant.  Then Ellis Lefevre checks in to the hotel and needs urgent top secretly confidential work done, and because of the flu going around Claudia is the only one to provide it.

Pippa is enaged to be married to her boss Tom who she works for at an insurance company but when they get into a car crash with her ex boss, Randal Harding, her world spins out of control. 

Maria Johnson is basically a spoiled little rich girl, except that she's not at girl anymore at 28.  She's living off alimony payments and as she's due to inherit a trust fund from her grandfather in a year she's not exactly trying to do anything meaningful with her life, until her father shocks her by demanding she get a job - with his PR firm if she's got no better prospects - and what's more her former lover is coming back to take over as director of the firm!

Martine Archer has worked as Charles Redmond's executive assistant (although they call her a private assistant) at a bank for four years since leaving her family's small sheep farm for London.  It's been a very peacable existance althought she has worried about Charles who appears to be fading away ever since his wife's death in a car accident 2 years ago, until he announces that he's bringing in his cousin Bruno Falcucci from Switzerland to take an active role in the company and be his heir.
