The hero/heroine have known each other for seven years, ever since they were both doing their respective courses at college.  He's a rich bad boy who's friends with her model cousin.  She's the orphaned niece raised by a resentful snobby family.  She meets the hero because he's friends/dating her cousin.  They clash, the hero has fun with her because she rips him to shreds while no one else will stand up to him.  Then the cousin dies (drug overdose).  After the funeral, they have sex.  Two years later, he runs into her again and finds out she's given birth to his son!  She has her doctorate in history and is a mature 27 yr old woman capable of raising her child.  She knows her rights and she won't be railroaded by the arrogant hero.  She thinks he's irresponsible and not able to be a good parent and she won't give him a lot of visitation.  Somehow she suggests marriage, not really seriously, as a solution.  He takes her up on it and they marry.  She gives him two clear options: marriage of convenience with no sex and your freedom, or marry me for real and give me fidelity.  They fight over issues of fidelity. 

Debbie Macomber is my favorite author, This book is wonderful
