Secretary on Demand by Cathy Williams (HP 2270)
The heroine is a fiesty Irish girl from a big family. She meets the hero at a restaurant she worked at, where she dumps a hot plate of food on an ex of hers and gets fired. He follows her, and offers her a job. She goes to work for him as a secretary and part-time child care provider. She gets along really well with his young daughter. She gets to know the hero, the hero flirts with her (a little bordering on sexual harrassment, given it's not normal for the boss to railroad his employee into moving in with him). They move in together, starting off innocently because she lives in a crappy bedsit. Soon he puts the moves on her. She ends up pregnant and runs off because he took her to bed saying that he didn't want to make any promises for their future. (Silly hero, why do heroes always say that? Don't they know that will make women pregnant with their babies run off in the opposite direction?) The hero in this book is quite a nice man, he's not your standard HP alpha hero, he's very human and ordinary, even old-fashioned, but he's still charming and flirty. Good read.
Rating: 3.5/5 stars, enjoyable, especially if you like secretary/boss stories. NFM
Unfair Assumptions by Emma Richmond (HP 1516)
The heroine is dragged into chaufering the hero & his young son. The hero is in a battle with his soon-to-be ex-wife. The hero/heroine get stranded together over night, and the ex-wife slyly discovers that info and uses it against him to create a scandal in the divorce proceedings. The hero thinks the heroine conspired against him with the ex to hurt his chance of custody of his son, and he blames her and yells at her. She wants to explain, and finally he starts to see sense and think that she's telling the truth. They need to verbally arm wrestle their way through the myriad of issues they have, and they wrangle a solid understanding and start their relationship on good footing (by the end of the book). You get the impression they have talked through a lot of their issues, in a natural progression.
In the Venetian's Bed by Susan Stephens (HP 2632)
The hero is a doctor. He is called to the scene when the heroine's daughter has a medical emergency. They fight, the heroine has a fear of doctor's incompetency. Ten years later, they meet again when the heroine comes to Venice to advocate patient rights at the hero's hospital.
Dream a Little Dream by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Chicago Stars #4, 1998
Rachel Stone would have no luck at all if it wasn't for bad luck!
Blame It on the Dog
This book was read in dribs and drabs, which makes it a bit difficult to form a cohesive opinion about it. Especially hard because the last half was read in the hospital emergency room with my mother (who is doing very well, thank God), but my overall impression was definitely favorable.
Mountain Sanctuary By: Lenora Worth SHLI
Stella, her son, and her father are an interesting family. They are a tight knit trio all living in the shadow of her deceased mother. Stella has lots of pent up anger about her mother leaving her and her father. Yet after her mothers passing they moved there to runn the B&B.
Lone Star Legacy By: Roxanne Rustand HSR #1442
Beth was looking for a fresh start and the inherited cafe in the middle of nowhere was her ticket to it. As a young widow with a young daughter, starting over in a small town was just what she needed. Especially since her late husband's killer was after her now.
