Set in the beautiful, wild countryside of Exmoor in sixteenth-century England, The House of Allerbrook depicts sixty years in the lives of the Sweetwater family, particularly Jane Sweetwater, who from an introspective teenager gradually becomes a strong, outspoken woman, fiercely loyal to her family.

Following her daughter’s murder and the subsequent collapse of both her marriage and career, hard-bitten reporter Carson Lynch flees Miami for her hometown of Biloxi, Mississippi. By day she sleepwalks through her new job at the only paper that will have her; by night she finds solace in a bottle of vodka.
