As a teenager, the narrator found an old book that was blank except for a woodcut print of a dragon and a packet of old letters.  When she asks her father about the book and the letters, she is brought (somewhat against the father's will) into his quest for the ancient evil that is Vad the Impaler whose terrible reign led to some of the most ancient of the vampire legends.
