I surived the general dentist visit today! I did not get everything done today because even with the smallest dose of medicine for my dental anxiety, I was a bundle of nerves...but some steps were accomplished. He does seem to be a dentist willing to work with me and a dentist who has more ideas for accomplishing the task at hand than any other dentist I have seen in Colorado other than my periodontist. I got the X-rays done, even that panoramic one which i haven't had done in a couple of decades.
The biggest accomplishment is that I feel good about him intellectually and on that gut intuition level too. I found a great periodontist when I moved to Colorado, but it has taken my close to 8 years to find a general dentist who had some ideas and solutions. I go back next week for a cleaning and to deal with the lost filling and to finally get done what other general dentists seemed unable to do. Who knows what he will find when the remaining filling material is removed or what is ahead...but at least THIS dentist seems both knowledgeable and able to work with people as people. We are going to have to up the dosage to deal with the anxiety. It is so frustrating...it has nothing to do with whether I feel good about a dentist or even what they are doing..it is just walking in the door and sitting in the chair that freaks me out. Changing dentists is a major stress thing too. At least this guy is young so he won't be retiring soon.
Yippeee! One step down and a step that is moving forwards instead of sideways or backwards.. Now maybe the dental stuff can take a bit more of a back burner and I can have the focus to get back to more reading and reviewing!

Merri I'm so glad your experience was positive. Note I said positive and not "enjoyable". LOL. I am hoping that when I make my first visit with my new dentist next month things go well.

Paisley or Merri?
I have an anxiety problem as well and sometimes it is hard to get a dentist to take you seriously and not think you're being a big baby.
Go with your gut feeling and good luck on your future appointments.

Donna, Thanks. I hope
Donna, Thanks. I hope your visit goes well. Pop me off an email before if you want and I'll think about you if it will help.
I am still nervous even though I am not there! So far, he seems seems better than any general dentist I have ever seen, not just here but elsewhere too. My husband was in the room and he even said "I am going to this guy!" when we left. He has dental anxiety too but he keeps it inside. One thing I did like about this dentist is both that he had more ideas and, despite the fact that I was so nervous, he did not talk down to me. One thing I really liked about this guy is that he had choices in mind, solutions....even more solutions than I knew about.

Angel, I know what you
Angel, I know what you mean! You hit the nail on the head. I am an intelligent woman who has done a lot of very brave things in my life but the dentist is just not one of those things and never will be no matter how much I love my dentist or no matter how many times I have had a procedure done before. I used to play tough guy but I can't do it anymore. Finally, I just admitted it and somehow that has helped. I have all sorts of procedures done even a root canal, gum surgery .... things I never thought I could ever endure. I think the only reason I have gotten this far is that I have had periodontists who just dealt with the anxiety without treating me like a child or like I am stupid.
I have dealt ok with oral surgeons, periodontists, a prosthodontist and an endodontist but finding a general dentist since I moved here was such a nightmare that I had to have 2 specialists work together to do my general dentistry here just because the general dentists I tried told me flat out they did not have the expertise needed. I am stil not going to have fun next week but it is a major relief to finally find a dentist familiar with what I need to have done....and to have more knowledge or ways of doing it than the dentists I had in NC!

Surviving is good! I think
Surviving is good! I think it will be easier next time knowing this dentist is more like my periodontist instead of the others. Jayne, thanks. It's never smooth sailing with me and dentists...but manageable is great.
To get back to books...now it's easy to see why on the surface it is almost a cosmic joke how addicted I am to Harlequin Medical Romances seeing how a dentist can turn me into a 2 yr. old bundle of nerves. Actually though the HMR love makes sense....professionalism and compassion in medicine.

re: surviving the dentist
I'm glad to hear you're doing well and that you've found a good dentist--that makes all the difference in the world! I'm getting to the stage where I probably shouldn't be using the dentist back in my parents' town, but what can I say, he's wonderful and it would be so hard finding a new one just like him...
That's good news
Glad you have favourable instincts about him.
Best wishes for the treatment.
