As I noted a while ago, I recruited my sons to start reviewing the
books they are reading to help add to the Harlequin Charity Challenge.
I thought it was a simple and painless way to contribute to a charity
as well as change the beat around here every now and then.

This review is from my oldest - 12

whom I totally insulted by accidentally giving him the name of 10 initially. :-P

Whoops. Got that changed pretty quick I can tell ya.   ;-)

BLURB:

It’s 1936, in Flint, Michigan. Times may be hard, and ten-year-old
Bud may be a motherless boy on the run, but Bud’s got a few things
going for him:Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis

1. He has his own suitcase filled with his own important, secret things.

2. He’s the author of Bud Caldwell’s Rules and Things for Having a Funner Life and Making a Better Liar Out of Yourself.

3. His momma never told him who his father was, but she left a clue:
flyers of Herman E. Calloway and his famous band, the Dusky Devastators
of the Depression!!!!!!

Bud’s got an idea that those flyers will lead him to his father.
Once he decides to hit the road and find this mystery man, nothing can
stop him–not hunger, not fear, not vampires, not even Herman E.
Calloway himself.

FORMAT: Paperback

REVIEW:

This book is about a orphan who is trying to find his father. His
mother died when he was still young. The only clue he has is a flier of
a band his mother had. The person that he thought to be his father
happen to be his grandfather. This book I would have to say is almost
as good as Harry Potter, Eragon, and Pendragon. His mother ran away
when she was only a child. This is one of the best books I have ever
read.

Going to get a kick

Hi Sadhbh!  12 isn't up yet but I'm sure he'll get a kick out of seeing someone commented on his post.

I personally had not read the book or seen it and didn't know anything about it until I read his review and then searched out the image and cover blurb.  Thought it was neat how well he'd really echoed what the book was about.

great

great way of getting kids reading and reveiwing the books they have read and help add to a worthy cause. Do they write out the reviewslike a book review and then you type it out and post it or tell you about the book?

How they do it

They have to read every day for school and have been doing reviews of all kinds for school now since they started school.  The school has been great about insisting on this.

They also have to know how to type--so I simply said, "Pick one you've read and write something about it."  He typed it right on the blog write page.  I then went back and added in the photo and blurb which I found off the net.   Cool
