 Sarah La Rue is a missionary daughter in the South Pacific she has two Gods in her life her Father has belief in Jesus but her mother believes also in the island gods. The people gave lip action to being Christian and keep to there own beliefs. The tropical flowers, waterfalls, palms and lush green soothe  Sarah's soul. She Believed in Jesus and that He is God and accepted Jesus in her heart and life. .

Bill Thomas's criminal past leaves him for dead in the ocean. Sarah finds him and helps him recuperate.

After her mother died, her aunt has given her lots of advice like "Never let your husband see you cry It is a grave mistake for then he will look upon you with contempt. " Her aunt was highly respected by her husband and all the village as a strong woman.

So Sarah desperately wants her husband Bills respect, and for him to think of her as strong and wants his love. Pleasure in being held in his arms makes her fear he will think of her as weak and pity her and hold her in contempt, so she should keep a stern face and not smile. Bill feels shunned with the cool regard, she blasts him with her well aimed hard looks never a flicker of expression or joy on seeing him. He wonders why she is so different after they married.
