Thief of Hearts by Teresa Medeiros (Bantam)
Lucy Snow is the daughter of Admiral Sir Lucien Snow and the French wife he never thought very highly of. So when her ship gets accosted by the dread Captain Doom Lucy's knows she must behave in a way that would not embarrass her perfect father. Captain Doom's crew bring her aboard their ship but he does not ravish her as he has been rumored to ravish 10 virgins in a single night, but turns her loose to swim to the ship sent to rescue her, with a message of warning to bring to her father that Captain Doom is coming after him for his revenge. Her father is not at all pleased by these antics despite her exemplary behavior (although Captain Doom did kiss her she kept her virginity and later stabbed him in the shoulder, but it was with the Admiral's elephant tusk letter opener...) and subsequently hires her a bodyguard, Gerard Claremont, to ensure the pirate doesn't come back after her, even though the pirate is after him. Gerard is quite annoyed when Miss Lucinda Snow “my friends call me Lucy but you may call me Miss Snow” begins to regale him with tales of the dashing Captain Doom whom she is clearly quite enamored of, but soon enough he finds himself bending over to please her...
Gerard/Captain Doom has got to be the best behaved pirate ever. Upon seeing Lucy's bedroom he's even shocked to find it messy! He's completely honorable and refuses to ruin her as Gerard even when she comes to him and asks him to. His pirate crew is too cute too. All in all this is a nice novel which requires quite a bit of suspension of disbelief, not to be taken too seriously (although I did wonder that Lucy's father who is ever so keen on protecting her virginity doesn't seem to be doing anything to marry her off).
