Susan Napier is one of the first category romance authors I glommed -- I scoured UBSs. I could not get enough of her books. So it is appropriate that my first entry into the 100,000 challenge is her latest book...and that it contained so many of the elements I've always loved in her books. There is the trademark Napier opening with our heroine Emily posing as something she is not and being (almost) caught out by the hero. She thinks she has escaped, but we know better. 
The opening chapter is a prologue of sorts, because some time has passed when we catch up with Emily again. Her house and studio, where she restores old and valuable ceramics, has burned to the ground. She is forced to accept more help than her pride would like from an elderly benefactor. His nephew, Ethan, arrives intent on protecting his beloved uncle from the gold-digging hussy...and recognising her from the infamous party in the opening scene does not improve his opinion.
I loved the way Emily rallied from the shock and stood up for herself, trading barbed dialogue with Mr Alpha (although he's not TOO alpha.) Loved the verbal exchanges, the heat, the secondary characters, the insight into Emily's restoration methods, the rose petals, and the midbook twist.
