Jack was estranged from his father when the wealthy tycoon married a venomous gold-digger. They adopted two daughters who grew up with all the privileges Jack was denied. He had nothing to do with the family until, at 24, he tried to meet his father. He was turned away at the gate by the nasty (and she really was a piece of work!) stepmother, but not before a short encounter with 14yo Sally whose spirit, beauty and horsemanship left quite an impression.
Ten years later Jack had made his own fortune, originally playing poker. After his father's death he inherits the majority of the estate, not by chance but due to a business takeover type plan. I didn't quite understand why none of his family or the media or anyone knew about this, but that's a minor quibble. Jack is set on revenge against the stepmother, evicting her from the family's country estate and striking a deal with Sally.
She can stay on at the property where she is preparing her showjumpers for a tilt at The World Cup, he will even pay her a generous salary and keep on the beloved staff, but he makes it clear that he also wants fringe benefits.
I really liked that, despite his vengeance plans and his Blackjack nickname, Jack was not cold and hard. He didn't pressure Sally into his bed; he made sure she was willing. And Sally wasn't all hiss-and-spit redheaded spirit. She didn't side with her horrid mother through wrongheaded family duty.
They were a well-matched and sensible pair and I felt the connection, the heat, the love. Interesting ending with no black moment.
