On Tursday June 5th, I was lucky enough to be invited to the official opening of the Mills & Boon Centenary celebrations exhibition - And then He Kissed Her - which was held in the Central Library in Manchester.
It was a sparkling event with the Hallé singers, wine (the wine was appropriately names Love Saves The Day!) and canapés, and even two actors playing the roles of Mills & Boon heroes, ready to escort all the visitors around the exhibition.
The launch was attended by many M&B editors and PR staff and amongst the M&B authors there were - someone called Kate Walker, India Grey, Annie Burrows, Gill Sanderson and June Francis. The exhibition is set around part of one of the curving corridors, with glass cases showing covers and a brief note from various periods from 1908 until the present day. There was the first copy of the first book ever published by the company after it was founded in 1908. This was Arrows from The Dark by Sophie Cole and it was signed of the flyleaf by both Gerald Mills and Charles Boon.
There are some fascinating items of memorabilia from the early days of the publishing house, including a little book entitled "How to live without servants", and a letter to the editors written by Jack London, from the deck of his yacht in 1914
There is also a brilliant piece of original artwork made up of Mills & Boon covers cut up and moulded into the shape of a corset. This is described like this:

“’Tis the good reader that makes the good book; a good head cannot read amiss: in every book he finds passages which seem confidences or asides hidden from all else and unmistakably meant for his ear.”

I wish...
...I could go! Was hoping to hear Nicola Cornick speak in the Manchester library on Saturday, but think I will be doing family things in Harrogate. (My fingers are still crossed that I can get there...)
Best wishes

I'd love
I'd love to see the exhibition: is there any chance of it coming anywhere near Bournemouth?

Hi . . .
Hi Paisley
I'm glad you liked the post. There are more images on my blog if you'd like to take a look. It must be frustrating being in the USA and reading all about the special events and publications for the Centenary celebrations in the UK. But then soon Harlequin will be celebrating it's 60th - and you'll get all the fun deals!
But yes, if there's something you really want then I expect the Mills & Boon site ( http://www.millsandboon.co.uk/ ) will be able to help you. They do have the special Centenary goodies.

Do try . . .
Hi Carol
Do try to get to ee the exhibition if you get a chance - it's not huge but it is really interesting. Though sadly, you won't get the 'heroes' to show you round.
Nicola's event sounds great - but I think I'll have to stay at home this time - I'll be back in Manchester in July and I do have a book to write! I hope you get to that - but family things in Harrogate sound fun too. I like Harrogate.

Janet . . .
I'm not sure where exactly the exhibition is going to - but as it is supposed to be touring the UK there is a good chance it will go somewhere near Bournemouth - nearer than Manchester anyway!
I'll see what I can find out about that and it I find out where it's going and when I'll post it on my blog and on this blog too, because I'm sure a lot of people would like to see it

Thanks Kate
I went to your blog and had a look at the other pictures and comments. It must have been really enjoyable.
I have a book of patterns for felt toys which must have been published in the 50's by the M&B educational department.
From what I have heard Butlins post war and until the mid 60's was really the place to go for many people because everything was done for you and the cost was all inclusive. The original package holiday!
Hi Janet
I haven't yet managed to find out where the exhibition will go but when I do I will post the details. I'm glad you enjoyed the report on my blog and the photos.
That Mystery at Butlins book is part of my own collection. And inside the front cover it is covered in signatures. The person who originally owned it once worked at Butlins in Filey - in the 60s, I think. And all her friends and fellow red coats had bought her that as a souvenir. I was so intrigued by that when I found it.
All best wishes
