Provence A-Z

This is the third and final book that I read on my French vacation.  And how fitting to read Provence A-Z while in Provence.

Peter Mayle is the well known British author of books such as A Year In Provence and Toujours Provence.  These books describe his and his wife's experiences of buying a house in Provence, and enjoying all of what Provence has to offer: picturesque countryside, quirky neighbours and the region's bountiful foods and wines.  I read these books a few years ago, and always dreamed of going to the Provence that Peter Mayle described.  And I have to say, he was absolutely right as this corner of France is undeniably beautiful.

Provence A-Z is an encyclopedia on Provence and really allows the reader to experience Southern France letter by letter.  As per usual, Mayle writes with his usual wit, humour and knowledge.  Some people hate Mayle, and feel that he has ruined Provence by driving hordes of tourists there, but I for one feel that he writes out of love for his adopted home, and despite the tourists, it is still magical.  Pick up Provence A-Z, and you will imagine yourself strolling through fields of lavendar, with a baguette and bottle of wine in hand.
