Kathleen Fields was alone on her ranch during a blizzard that had already wiped out the electricity.  Under ordinary circumstances this would not have been a problem, but these were not ordinary circumstances.  Her water had just broken and the baby wasn't due for another month.

Derek Taliferro is not only a doctor, but a NICU specialist.  He finds a very distressed Kathleen in an old truck, stuck in a ditch, on the side of the road.

Somewhere between noticing her first labor pain and seeing the baby's head crown Derek fell in love with both Kathleen and her baby.  Kathleen had suffered emotional damage at the hands of her ex-husband so her love had to be nurtured.
