Backcover Synopsis - Julia Livia Rufa is horrified when barbarians invade Rome and steal everything in sight.  But she doesn't expect to be among the taken!  As Wulfric's woman, she's ordered to keep house for the uncivilized marauders.  Soon, though, Julia realizes that she's more free as a slave than she ever was as a sheltered Roman virgin.

It would be all too easy to succumb to Wulfirc's quiet strength, and Julia wants him more than she's ever wanted anything.  But Wulfric could one day be king, and Julia is a Roman slave.  What future can there be for two people from such different worlds?

Personal Opinion - I enjoyed this book.  It showed the daily life of the so-called barbarians who sacked Rome.  This was a book which gave the reader a great deal of insight into the two cultures and their strengths and weaknesses.

Romans

This sounds good.  I am looking forward to getting to the Romans on my shelves. I had to study Latin in school but I just never got a feel for the period because it wqs more about memorizing vocabulary and translating.   I enjoyed Latin a lot but I regret that I was so preoccupied with that that I never got the feel of the times.  My last Latin teacher was this really old guy who gave us a glimpse of the passions in the Aenead but I was so overwhelmed by homework that all I spent more time trying to memorize vocabulary.  I am hoping these Roman historicals will sort of fill in and capture that one glimpse of passion he gave.

I also took Latin but only

I also took Latin but only for a year then dropped it and continued with French.  I have liked these books on Rome because they give us a taste of the day to day life of the Romans rather than the lives of Julius Caesar, Mark Anthony and Cleopatra or The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire.
