♫ "Change... Yeah, A Change... Would Do You Good" ♪

Hey, I see that my moving crew has arrived!
.
Growing up as an Air Force brat, I dreaded the constant moving. Often without much notice, we had to box up our possessions, yank out deeply planted roots and leave behind dear friends and favorite places.
.
We never knew what we’d find at the end of the long trip. Would our new house be just right or too small? Would our new teachers be nice or mean? Would the new neighborhood kids be friendly or shut us out? Could we find new doctors, dentists, hair stylists we trusted?
.
I hate the unknown. I’m a compulsive planner, one of those squirrely nesters who lives to check items off my alphabetized, color-coded to-do lists, and paint and wallpaper and sew to make my surroundings cozy and comfortable. I like to settle in and stay put. I never went willingly into that good night. I was raised to believe military families did their duty and didn’t whine about it, but I shed plenty of private tears. Unlike my heroines, I’m so not adventurous. I fear change.
.

They don’t call ‘em growing “pains” for no reason. Yet, in the end, all that moving was healthy for me. I certainly didn’t turn out to be stodgy or stuffy! It taught me to adapt to fluctuating environments, and to truly appreciate diversity and applaud originality. To this day, I enjoy initiating conversations with strangers…people I meet standing in checkout lines, waiting in doctors’ offices and especially browsing in bookstores. My introverted husband once told me admiringly after a business dinner with his co-workers, “It’s so easy for you to talk to anybody, about anything!”

.
Life changes. Nothing stays static, no matter how hard we wish it would. Especially in publishing. We authors don’t like talking about it – because it’s terrifying as hell and totally messes with our Muses – but new editors, different guidelines, and fluctuating markets are our constant reality. Some authors just disappear off the grid. Although we twist and stretch, and strive to adapt, sometimes in spite of our very best efforts, the stories we’re writing just don’t fit the place we’re at anymore.
.
And that’s where I find myself today, tiptoeing down an unfamiliar road, attempting to read the map. I never could figure out the blasted things (a total lack of spatial relations skills).
.
I have no books slotted in the SRS line this year or next, and it appears unlikely in the near future. This will be my last “official” article on this blog, at least for a while. I’m stepping aside for now to give you wonderful readers here more time to chat with the current SRS authors about their stories. They’re an amazing group of talented, smart, supportive women, and it’s been my pleasure and privilege to work with them these past five years. I hope to someday be able to do so again. And it’d be great to guest blog here from time to time, if they’ll have me.
.
Change is never easy. But it’s always an adventure. I have no idea how long my new journey will take, or what awaits at the end. Who knows, it could even be a curvy U-turn, right back here to where I started. I’ve loved Harlequin romances since I was 14 years old and loved writing for SRS; it was a lifelong dream come true.
.
I’ll definitely be active on my website, email newsletter and Facebook page, and hope you’ll visit me there.
.
For all you terrific, loyal readers who continue to email me asking when you’re going to get your hands on more Diana Duncan books, bless you! Don’t stop…you keep me motivated. I have faith that the Big Guy has a plan for me and exciting new places He wants me to discover – He always has before!
.
I believe I was given my gift for a purpose, and I won’t stop writing. So keep the faith, and please keep looking for me on the shelves.
.
Peace out, my friends.

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Good luck to you

Diana,  Let me be the first one to wish you the best in your new adventure.  You are on my autobuy list of authors and will remain there.  I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, and something way better is waiting for you down the road.  It happened to me.  I'm on your newsletter list and I'll keep checking your website and look forward to the day when I can buy another one of your great titles.  In the meantime, I'll just reread the ones I've got  Smile.

This Isn't The End, Just A New Beginning :)

Diana, you're an amazing woman. Hang in there. As my sainted mom always says...the right door will open. I will keep looking for your next books :D

 Hugs!

Its a damn shame!!!!!

That's not fair sweetie.  You rock as a writer for SRS. You have always been a auto read for me. Ive just about  read all of  your books too.

Least keep in touch over at FB allright.

patsy

Live your life in such a way that when your feet hit the floor in the morning, Satan shudders & says...

'Oh hell! She's awake!!' thank you for letting me use it Nini

Change for Diana comes too soon...

Diana,

This is shocking news!  I love your books and will be keeping an eye on your newsletter for the latest and greatest you produce!  You are a wonderfully tallented individual...I so look forward to reading your next work.  Good luck to you!

KelleyF

Thanks!

Thank you, Kathy. You were quick! You must have been at the blog site already. *G* I'm so flattered that I'm on your autobuy list! Wow! I have my autobuy lists and I know how much I look forward to glomming them. Oh, absolutely, everything DOES happen for a reason. I'm sure of it. I'm glad things turned out well for you. The image of you rereading and rereading (and rereading)  my titles makes me grin. Thanks. Cool

.

Su, Is your mom related to mine? 'Cause she always says that very thing, too. Then again, Moms do have the wisdom of experience (if only OUR kids would believe that. *G*). And I don't know about your mom, but my mom is almost always right. And lets me know it. LOL!

.

Patsy, I honestly believe that this change will be a GOOD thing. I wanted to write this blog to let my readers know where I went, and so they wouldn't quit looking for me on the shelf. Before I became a writer, when my favorite authors "disappeared" I always thought they'd given up writing and stopped seeking out their books. I didn't want readers to think I'd retired. (I can't retire until I can afford to tip those pool boys to fetch me drinks with little umbrellas in them <g>).

.

Kelley, what's the saying ... (I've forgotten exactly how it goes)... timing is everything? All changes feel like they come too soon, but really, they come exactly when we need them the most. Thanks so much for the good luck wishes. Laughing

Best of luck with the change, m'dear.  Your heroes totally rock, I love the humor in your books, and you always keep my turning pages.  So I'll be waiting and watching your website to find out when I can get another fix of Diana Duncan heroes.  (They're so YUMMY!)

Diana, I can't tell you how sorry I am to read that you're no longer blogging here, or have any future releases with SRS.  I'm a big fan of your exciting, sexy and funny books, and these blogs which many times have made my day.  And I'll be cheering for you loudly at the RITA awards next month..as well as continuing to follow your career through your website so that I don't miss any new Diana Duncan releases.

Change is scary, but sometimes for the best, and GOOD LUCK to you!

SRS is overlooking a sparkling gem. You're an auto-buy for me, too. It's really disheartening to come across an author whose stories stay embedded in your mind looong after having been read, and hear that the publisher who opened the door and introduced us all to such a wonderful talent has decided to lock that door now. I just don't understand it.

I'm so sorry Diana...

But good things do come around.  I want to say that was the absolute sincerest goodbye i've seen or read in a long time.  Shows what type of person you really are.

You'll find a new niche, and rock the world.

Am so sorry to hear you are

Am so sorry to hear you are changing Publishers but am looking forward to your new books.  I am a very big fan of yours & don't know what they were thinking to get rid of auch a great Author.  Be sure & let everybody know when your next book is coming out.  Tarri

NOT a good birthday present

Dear Diana,

You said "Be nice" so I will be, but I don't feel very nice. It's my birthday today and I opened my email and the very first one I read was your news. What ARE they thinking? From your very first book, you had me hooked and I became of those "autobuy" fans. I even wrote to you about how much I loved your book. Maybe you could become of those self-publishing authors, sell a few million books, and then we could all tell certain people, "Hah, see what  you gave up!" I don't keep many of my paperbacks; I tend to share or donate to charity. However, yours have been "keepers". To show what league you're in in by opinion, my other "keeper" authors are Christina Dodd, Janet Chapman, Day Leclaire, and a few others here and there when I find one I REALLY enjoy. I wish you all the best as you face new challenges and whatever you do, DON'T stop writing. Your MANY fans will look forward with great anticipation to your next book and bless the publisher who takes notice of your talent for telling WONDERFUL stories.

Paperback Books Forever!

Diana...

I haven't commented here or on the loops about your circumstances, because I just haven't been able to think of anything that would help. Yes, I've had the moments of truth and the down times and the books I fell in love with that never found a home. But nothing to compare with the incomprehensible injustice that is being done to you. I'm commenting now only to say this: I would be a lot more heartbroken if I didn't know, without any doubt whatsoever, that your fans have not heard the last from you, and that some wonderful and exciting things are about to come of what seems now like a setback.  You go, girl.

Books 3 and 4: "LADY KILLER"May 2009, and "KINCAID'S DANGEROUS GAME, June 2009
Watch for Book 5: "MISTAKEN IDENTITY" Coming in 2010!

(my subject headers always all start to sound the same after a while... *G*)

.

Tarri, thank you for continuing to stick with me! I will absolutely be yelling the news from the rooftops when I have a new book out. I might even rent one of those ice cream trucks and drive thru the streets, announcing it. Wouldn't that be fun? LOLOL!

.

ilovepaperbooks...Awww... Don't let this spoil your special day! I am honored to be on your keeper shelves with such amazing authors! I am so grateful to readers like yourself who have me on autobuy. It just seems so unreal to me, because I was a reader long before I became a writer, and I'm still such a "fan girl" for my fav authors. *G* Just think, maybe, (maybe!) by your next birthday or not too long afterwards, I'll have some good news to post. (Let's hope so!). Go out and celebrate...and enjoy cake & ice cream. Have a piece of cake for me (TWO pieces if it's chocolate! *G*) I would sing for ya, but trust me on this, you don't want me to. {{HUGS}}

Kat

Kat, I know you've had your own struggles lately...far more serious than mine! I deeply appreciate you taking the time to stop by and wish me well. You know, I believe it's not an injustice, it's just life. I firmly believe that nothing happens to me outside of God's plans for me. I'm totally trusting in HIm to lead me to the next step (and then give me the guts to take it!) Yes, I am sad at the changing circumstances, because as I said, I do tend to get attached. But I am also very excited about what I'm supposed to begin. I'm pretty sure I know what it is... so...we'll see if I have the chops to pull it off!.

.

And I'll repeat what I said above in an earlier respons:  the only reason I wrote this final post is so that readers wouldn't think I retired or anything (I have to wait to retire until I can tip the pool boys to bring me drinks with little umbrellas in them). I want readers to keep looking for my books on the shelves and not give up!

.

Bless you, and I am TOTALLY rooting for you in the RITA's. You deserve to win! Laughing

Say it ain't so!!

Diana,

I am flabbergasted by your blog today! I'm not sure I understand how you could not have any books coming out for SRS when (to me a very longtime HQ reader) your books EPITOMIZE the line. I know when I pick up a Diana Duncan book I'd better have a few hours free because there is no way it's getting put down until I read THE END. You can bet your sweet bippy that I will be following you wherever you land - and it will be somewhere great because of your talent for creating such phenomenal heroes and heroines, the way your action flows and good grief the humor! OMG, your humor is out of this flipping world. I know you are destined for wonderful, huge and exciting projects. I realy hope that I don't actually have to wait two years to read another Diana Duncan project!!

If anyone from Harlequin is reading this, please reconsider!!! You are losing a gem. She's like the Hope Diamond! Wthout the curse, of course! Good luck Di. And from one BRAT to another, happy moving!

Like so many others, I am saddened and shocked to read this.  I am not a fan of those love in day books, until I read yours and each one of your books pulled me more in than the last.  I was so looking forward to all of the other men attached to family to get their stories told.  I hope you are able to find another publisher for your books, I always enjoyed them.

Winding down....

Jen... would you like to be my new publicist? I can't even begin to thank you for all the beyond-nice kudos! Humor has always come to my rescue in the darkest places of my life. I "inherited" it from my mom. No matter how dire the situation, she can always find something about it to make us laugh...it's my most cherished legacy from her. I hope I've managed to pass it on to my daughters (somehow, hearing the snarky comments they come up with, I think I did a decent job there. *G*)

.

Barbara, I'm not sure you want to be following me too closely...I'm in complete earnest when I say I have zero map skills (can't manage to work a GPS, either). We might find ourselves wandering around and seriously lost. But hey, I'm game if you are!  ;) I do appreciate your support!

.

Cady, that is one of the biggest compliments an author can receive: if she/he can take a story element or character type that a reader dislikes and change their minds. No matter how many other books I go on to write in the future, my sexy SWAT O'Rourke brothers and their loyal Riverside teammates will always have a permanent home in my heart. Kiss

Cha-cha-changes

Hey Di!

Oh god, been there and done that as a military brat too. New things, oh yay, new duty station, oh yippee.  But like you, I found those changes have helped me in my life to be adaptable and strong. You can't keep me down. I've found if one path is closed, there's  always another one--if you're looking. I also learned to be tough. Don't tell me I can't do something--I'll prove you wrong.

Now, please remember, Sia's Doubt Demon Slaying business is always in full force and going strong. Have boots Will Travel!   All I need, as you know, is some paper towels to wipe away the blood--especially for my boots.  Dang, demon blood is so hard on good leather. Oh and I need Danny's Demon slaying clean up service, You slay 'em we spray'em away.

All joking aside:  Diana, you are a skilled writer and you write stories that people want to read or you wouldn't have made the RITA FINALS nor would you have made the Romantic Times Book of the Year Finalist for 2009.  Keep that in mind and don't doubt yourself or let anyone call into question your abilitiy to write a good story.

I love your stories as do many readers, I love your humor and sense of fun you bring to dangerous situations. Your characters are 3 dimensional, you have a gift for setting up not only external conflict but internal conflict and then taking that internal conflict between your two MC and pitting those insecurities against one another. When your characters win over that conflict it leaves me, as reader, satisfied. It feels real. That's all you can ask for from your readers, satisfaction. I haven't seen a book you've written fall short there, ever!

I'm sorry to see you leave after 5 long years. Spread your wings a bit. There will be others who will appreciate your skills.  One foot in front of the other and before you know it, you will have climbed up the next mountain.

Regardless of who you write for?  I see a Diana Ducan book, I'll buy it, because I know what I'm getting--an excellent story and a satisfying read.

~Sia McKye~

Diana,

Odd to me that an author with a RITA finalist and Romantic Times awards isn't being picked up, when it's obvious that your books are good.  That makes no sense to me, but, then again, no one asked me, I suppose.

I'm like you in that I tend to root where planted.  I'm not completely averse to change, but I don't like change just for change's sake.  Still, I like your attitude about change sometimes being difficult but for the best.  Know that you have a loyal following who will doggedly seek out your books and buy them.

Kea, too funny!  I loved your comment about pretending that they're all straight!  If only...
