#10 Private Demon by Lynn Viehl, Signet Eclipse 2005

Thierry Durand had been tortured by the Brethren and had his wife killed in front of him. Thierry is Darken and heals quickly. He did not die, but it left him is horrendous pain with his legs broken in many places and the skin badly scarred.

Alexandra Keller is a noted reconstructive surgeon and fixed his body but his mind was still ravaged by the deceit and betrayal that led to his capture and that of his family.  As he left New Orleans, he grabbed several files that he found pertaining to the rape and torture of a young girl in Chicago.  Unknown assailants had also set her apartment on fire and left her in it in labor. She was horribly burned.  He wanted to take out his revenge on the Brethren who he felt did this to this mortal girl. His search led him to Jema Shaw, an antiquities curator at the Shaw Museum where the girl had worked.  Jema was a delicate girl with childhood diabetes.  She lived in an opulent mansion with her mother.  Meryl Shaw had broken her back on a dig with her husband James and was confined to a wheelchair.  Jema was born the day Meryl broke her back.  Their relationship was uncomfortable.

Thierry took to visiting Jema while she was sleeping and entering her dreams.  She got to know this golden eyed demon and incorporated him into her dreams.  Thierry watched her and guarded because there were forces working in Chicago that threatened her.

This next chapter in the Darkyn is very good.  I highly recommend the series. Lynn Viehl is an intense writer with great skill.  Read the story and learn how she cleverly intertwines the lives and backgrounds of the characters in the plot.
