Surgeon, Guillaume Remy, and his wife Harriet Remy (a nurse) have been traveling to war torn areas for years, treating all war casualties. But past few years have been rocky for their relationship as she wants to ‘change the rules’ of their relationship. He has 24 hours to change her mind or she will walk away from him and their marriage.
This is one of the most intense reads I have read in a long time. Have you ever been sucked into a vortex? This book pulls the reader in (picture a full size cartoon character being sucked in through an old-fashioned key hole) and then swirls the reader through this kaleidoscope of emotions as it counts down the last 24 hours of Gill and Harry’s time on assignment. Andrews has this ability to start the reader off by thrusting the reader into an intense scene, she brings you down just a little, and then punches up the intensity level again. It is a lot like working in a fast paced, high intensity ICU or ER (ED or A&E). I love it!
One of my favorite sentences in the book is found on page 36, "From the people she worked with to the locals who were unfortunate enough to end up on their operating tables, it was like living in an opera composed by the UN." What great imagery! And this book is filled with other equally expressive sentences. I felt like I was right there it seemed so real. But one of her last sentences in the book sums it up so well, “And the last twenty-four hours had been a cram-packed roller-coaster of emotions…”
I selected this book for my 100th read (for this challenge) and I am very glad I did. I wanted a book that would take me on a fast-paced ride and would have an emotional intensity—this book did not disappoint. The best part about it was meeting up with characters I fell in love with before. This book introduced Dr. Ben and Nurse Katya who now have their own story, The Italian Count’s Baby, HMR Mar08. Andrews is a must read, autobuy for me. Thumbs up!

Hi Nancy!
I've noticed you read a lot of the Medical type stories. Maybe I'll give one a try on my next order. Any one in particular you'd suggest? Or a specific author?
BTW, I saw a post some where from you earlier about how no one seems to leave comments for your reviews. I have to admit, I have gotten lazy about that. I feel the same way so I kinda developed the 'why should I bother if no one else is' attitude.
That's the wrong attitude to have. I've tried leaving questions about some stories that never get answered which only helped my bad attitude. Anyhow, I'm working to improve that again.

Phew!
HI Nancy,
I've been sweating on this review
You have no idea how relieved I am!
I've said this before but it really is my favourite me book so far. It literally wrote itself even though I had to do a lot of research to get the surgery scenes right. Actually I wrote a lot of it on night duty - I just couldn't stop until it was done.
So pleased you liked Harriet and Gill.

Congrats
on reaching 100! And such a perfect book, too! Your description fits this book EXACTLY! Amy says she was sweating it but I knew you'd have to love it!!!
Shannon~ Amy Andrews and Marion Lennox are the first two names that come to my mind for the Medicals. Also, Kate Hardy and Olivia Gates.... I'm sure there are others but those are the names that jump to my mind first.

Amy, I knew you didn't need
Amy, I knew you didn't need to worry. I have loved your other two books that I've read so far. You have this gut gripping, gritty, emotive writing style that I love. It is so easy to get swept up into the story. And although I seriously loved the other 2 books I've read by you this was my favorite! I swear I felt every feeling that Harriet felt, I cried in chapter 2 and knew right then and there that this book had me. I so wanted to call in sick just so I wouldn't have to put the book down, but I was a good girl and went to work.
But as soon as I got home...
Shannon was it you who asked about what medicals to try? Sorry, I can't remember, but as mentioned Amy Andrews is a great author to try, so is Fiona Lowe, and Olivia Gates, Lynn Marshall and Meredith Webber are others that come to mind. But so far, I really haven't found one I didn't like.

Emotional Books
Why thank you, Nancy, ma'am
I must confess I cried myself when I wrote the scene where Harriet and Katya are standing on the balcony and they hear the keening cry of grief from a mother who's just lost her child and at the very end when you know who had to do you know what.
That's embarassing to admit
but I figure it's probably working if I'm tearing up.
As for other meds to try...the medical authors have a blogspot the link is in my signature line but we also have a website with all our latest releases and backlist and stuff about us at www.medicalromance.com.

Cry Me a River...
The Harriet and Katya scene on the balcony was very powerful and yes, that one made me tear up, too. But another scene that got to me was in the Harriet's last scrub when she was in such severe pain--I knew what was coming and I felt sooooooooo sad for her.
Speaking of Cry Me a River...

Did I mention this is my only book to go through with NO rewrites?
Another reason why I love this book.
