When she was seventeen, Jewel, her best friend Lizzie and Lizzie's newborn daughter are about to escape from the sect they've been living with when an FBI raid burns the compound to the ground and Jewel has to grab the baby and leave a dying Lizzie behind. Sixteen years later she's being blackmailed when someone kills the blackmailer while she's in the bathroom of his hotel room. Jewel aka Julie knows she'll never be able to convince the police she's innocent. Then she discovers that Dawn's father is still alive, and someone is trying to frame her for the blackmailer's murder and she has a new co-anchor to whom she's far too attracted and who's her only alibi. Can she trust him or is he trying to lull her into a sense of false security?
Suspenseful, a bit far-fetched but a nice romance and a good family dynamic with her daughter.

The suspense was very well done, almost too well, because
I don't deal well with suspense, which is why I don't watch TV anymore
It's rather amusing to see me moving around restlessly with the book in my hand trying to get away from the suspense of the next bit
"rather amusing" being the innately reticent way of saying "downright hilarious"

I enjoyed this one. There are two more books. They are Colder Than Ice and Darker Than Midnight.
Margie :)
I read Colder than Ice in the 2006 challenge, but
I didn't really remember it apart from a slight feeling of déjà vue with this one
