Maggie meets Jack and he insults her and she doesn't know why and they argue about their opposing viewpoints on real estate and development and get locked inside a property they're evaluating. When they get free, Jack goes to his hideaway but Maggie tracks him down and they have an affair and she gets pregnant. When he finds out he proposes but she refuses. He seems to accept her refusal but remains very present in her life. Maybe it's up to her to do the proposing?
We see this book as a flashback and I'm not sure I liked it that way. The back blurb was misleading, but luckily the book was better than it led me to believe Maggie's mother bugged me, I didn't like her manipulation and matchmaking which ended up depriving her daughter of her support during her pregnancy. I'm very glad nobody tried to manipulate DH and I like that because I'm just stubborn enough not to have married him if somebody was manipulating us.

Wouldn't that be cutting off your nose to spite your face?
