#26: Surrogate and Wife by Emily McKay, Desire, 2/2006

Score: 4  1/2

Kate Bennet is artificially inseminated in order to carry a baby for her sister.  Her sister's husband's best friend, Jake Morgan is the father.  Only then Kate discovers that her SISTER is PREGNANT!  Add to that a vindictive judge who would love to fire Kate and who would use her "indiscretion" to his political advantage. Jake, who is a firefighter and very attracted (to his own confusion) to Kate agrees to marry her in name only to save her job.  Neither realized just how tough that would be.

This was a great story.  I loved Jake's sensitivity and gentle caring toward Kate. He was the classic definition of "Protector".  The growth in their relationship, and their attachment to their baby was gradual and very believable.
