#276 A Soldier's Family by Cheryl Wyatt (Steeple Hill Love Inspired)

Manny had a little too much to drink at Joel and Amber's wedding and offends Celia by propositioning her. Then a short time later his parachute jump goes wrong and he breaks a lotta bones and ends up in hospital where Celia gets to see him every day, before rehabbing and staying with Joel and Amber, who Celia gets to see every day. Can Manny convince her that he's a changed man since God found him? Will Celia misunderstand the relationship between Manny and her son? Can she trust her heart to another man in a dangerous profession? Can she accept her son's choices in life? Will God help her to control her foot-in-mouth disease?
A lot of people might be surprised by this review after all my problems with the first book, but given that I discovered the problem was Amber's voice, they shouldn't be. Celia does not have the same voice as Amber, and Amber plays a relatively small rôle in this book, so she didn't get a chance to annoy me as we only heard her words, not her thoughts. I got Celia, I could understand her worries (I have sons of my own) and while my husband is not in a high-risk job, life is the most dangerous profession of all. I also got Manny and his desire not to alienate Javier, but his need to be honest with Celia. A real dilemma which was treated with a very deft touch. I felt there was less interference in this book (and we all know by now that's one of my hot buttons) and possibly I was in a better mindspace while I was reading (less interruptions or better behaved monsters in my background?). Whatever the reasons, this book just hit the perfect tone with me, hence the difference in rating.

Thought this was GREAT

Thought this was great and the dealing with real life issues regarding raising teens was well done and insightful. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series next year sometime.

RE:A SOLDIER'S FAMILY by Cheryl Wyatt

I really fancy the Wings of Refuge series by Cheryl!  I know that I've gone on-and-on... (infinity)... about her books -- but, for me, they work.  For me, they are perfectly written.  In reference to an earlier review by berlin, I do think that the Wings of Refuge books ARE more uniquely for American readers (though all readers, I think, would enjoy them).  They are tops with me!  Yes...as a boy my family emigrated from Belfast, was Irish Catholic, and are considered quite indigeneous.  However, once in the "States," we converted to classic Pentecostalism, and the Military life of the USMC is a very small gift I can give back to America for what it's given me.
