Well, Debra Webb has done it again - a spellbinding, edge-of-your-seat, chilling suspense with a nice bit of romance thrown in. What more can you ask for?
3 years earlier, Ryan was at the top of his field, a kidnapping expert within the FBI - he always solved the case. Then, his rescue plan is overruled by his superior and the victim dies. Ryan is made the scapegoat and is drummed out of the FBI. He's been floating around Florida, using women and alcohol to forget his problems. Then Vivian Grace shows up on his doorstep, the FBI needs his help. A child has been kidnapped, and the kidnapper will only release clues to the famed Ryan McBride. It seems the kidnapper was a big fan of McBride's, following his career and deeming him a hero. He has set into motion a series of kidnappings and will only reveal the clues to McBride. He will force the FBI to acknowledge their mistake in firing McBride in the first place and reinstate him.
McBride dreamed of being reinstated during the first year, but when the FBI didn't come knocking on his door, he sunk deeper and deeper into alcohol and depression. He wants to help with the cases, but is he still the man to do it?
Excellent book - just as good as her earlier book Traceless. (They are not connected). She has created 2 very interesting characters in Vivian and Ryan - both with a lot of baggage. Ryan no longer takes life very seriously so pairing him up with the "button-upped" Vivian is definitely a case of opposites attract. I've been a big fan of Ms. Webb's for years - I just love her HI Colby series. She has another book coming out, "Faceless" in August 2008.
