#52 Where There's Smoke by Kristin Hardy (M&B/SSE)

Sloane needs Nick's help in testing her firefighting GPS orientation invention, but he's convinced there's no point as it won't get funding. They fall in love but Sloane can't allow herself to love a firefighter, will Nick be able to convince her to give them a chance?
I would advise wannabe published authors to read this carefully because the first chapter is so well set up. We see Nick and in a few pages understand that politicians are not his friends, that funding is inadequate and badly spent - he needs a secretary and an updated computer system that will never be funded. We see Sloane her personal motivation, her determination to save lives, her naive belief in political promises. We have the all-important GMC, subtle in its simplicity, in what I consider excellent use of limited typeface - one single chapter.
As a reader it's just as good, a nice strong romance with a hunky firefighter, a well-intentioned woman and a strong believable conflict.
