#7:Witch in the House, Jenna McKnight, Avon books, October 2007

Score: 4.5

This is the first of three books I would guess about three contemporary witches who are all widowed mysteriously.  Their husbands all disappeared the same day and after 6 years, are just being declared dead.  The insurance company wants investigators Mason and Anthony to determine if there is fraud in this case.  They are assigned to get close to Jade, the owner of a bed and breakfast in Missouri.  I loved all three of the witches and Jade was a particularly appealing character who is a strong witch.. only... something goes wrong when she does two spells.. and she is convinced that Mason is there because of the spell and spends a great deal of effort (slapstick quality) trying to undo her spell.  Mason (who DOES look like Pierce Brosnan) is a very fun male character.  His voice reminds me of Harry Dresden (from the Jim Butcher, Dresden Files books) in that he is all man, but keeps getting himself into the most impossible situations and trying to bumble his way out again.

Delightful book and I will be looking forward to the next two.  One interesting note.  I love the cover art on this book.. but there is no broom, nor any black cat in this story, even though every chapter starts with a picture of a black cat (and he's on the cover).  Obiviously another case of the people not reading the book when determining the art.
