A Novel of the Darkyn... Book 1 - Read the review

Dr Alexandra Keller is a noted plastic surgeon working in Chicago. She had an article written about her claiming she was the fastest scalpel out there in the field. She is contacted by Michael Cyprien from New Orleans who offers her $4 million dollars to go to New Orleans and take his case.
Alex consistently refuses and is summarily kidnapped, drugged, and brought to New Orleans. Michael has no face. He was brutally tortured and wants Alex to operate on him. He has amazing healing skills and shows her how quickly he heals. She refuses and tells him she needs too much equipment. He tells her to make up a list and the next day she has a full clinic’s worth of equipment including xray machines and everything she will need to perform surgery to reconstruct his face. Little did she know why he healed so fast and what was in store for her, for Michael was part of the Darkyn – vampires living since the 14th century. She is intrigued with his case and finally agrees to perform the surgery not knowing what it would cost her.
John Keller is Alex’s brother. He is a priest. He left Alex when their foster parents died when Alex was fifteen. She feels he loved working with the poor in Brazil more than he loved her. He abandoned her to a private school and left. They have a brittle relationship. John is guilt ridden about Alex and their life before foster care when they lived on the streets. He is determined to find Alex after her kidnapping but is subverted by the Cardinal to go to Rome instead.
Alex's treatment of Michael confounds and confuses him. He is the lord, the person to be obeyed. She is sarcastic and refuses to take orders from anyone. It is amusing to see him taken down a peg or two.
The story didn’t feel like it came together right away but when it took off it took off in a big way. The way Alex deals with the Darkyn ‘curse’ is amazing. The culmination of the book left you open for the next book but WOW….. I refuse to give spoilers but WOW.
Rating….. Fantastic

Wow! Is right!
The whole series is WOW! Glad you enjoyed book 1 - it is darker than the BDB and like you said a bit slow to start, but I think that's because there is so much information to be disclosed about the Darkyn culture.
I love how confused M gets over A's determination not to be servile towards him. He has had centuries of being lord and master and A's independence certainly gets to him.
You'll enjoy the other books - many have M & A in them so you can revisit. I have the latest one Evermore on my TBR shelf. I'm in a bit of a reading slump so I won't start it until I'm ready. Being a darker series, I find I need to be in the mood to read them. Plus I'll need to re-read a few to remind me of the new characters

Thanks ElleJay
I have to get Evermore and am reading Dark Need now. I like Lucan surprisingly. For the kings assassin and a male slut he is surprisingly interesting. I love the way A puts up with nothing from M and he is so taken aback by her. It is refreshing. I enjoyed Theirry's story also but I have to say I like the way the author twists and turns the story and characters back and forth so they are intertwined..... makes me think of the 6 degrees of separation. I am enjoying Lynn Viehl's writing in this series... she also wrote as Jessica Hall and I devoured those books.

Hi Jeannie
I went back and looked at my ratings for NIght Lost - I gave it a 5. Here's a bit from my blog from last June.
This is the 4th book in the Darkyn Series and it is exceptional. It could stand alone; however, I would not recommend it. There are 2 stories intertwining and one follows closely with 2 characters from all the previous books. The passionate relationship of Michael Cyprian and Dr. Alexandra Keller continues as Michael searches for the kidnapped Alexandra. In between, Gabriel and Nick's story slowly unravels and the 2 stories collide about ¾ through.
I think this was the best one - although I really liked Lucan in Dark Need (he was sooo bad). But this one is both darker in that Gabriel and Nick have such tortured pasts both in body and spirit, but it also was uplifting in seeing Michael and Alexandra's relationship grow. I always knew there was an attraction but wondered how strong their emotions for each other were. In this one, Michael reveals intense feelings for Alexandra that I really liked to see - he seemed a bit aloof before.
I look forward to reading your reviews on the others. I should try to get to Evermore this weekend.

I am reading this one now. Isn't is amazing that in the last one King Richard's standard was a golden lion. hmmm. I an enjoying this read and this series. She does a good job of laying out breadcrumbs and finding them in the most strategic spots. Very Good

I haven't picked up any of
I haven't picked up any of this authors books yet, though i've been tempted...i think the mention of them being so dark has me holding back...but each time i hear mention of this series...i get curious again.

This book / This series
If not for the fact I really enjoyed her books as Jessica Hall I would never have chosen to read this book. The title alone put me off. I did however enjoy this book and went on to read the others. She is not as good as JR Ward or Lara Adrian but was interesting. I like the way she associated vampirism to a virus caught by Templar Priests during the Crusades and brought back to Europe by them unknowingly. Alex is a doctor and doesn't believe they are shunned by god because of this affliction.

Hi Jeannie, The title
Hi Jeannie, The title doesn't do anything for me either...nor does the cover pic to be honest...i think the combination of both is why i haven't felt compelled enough to buy it yet. Oh well, no rush...guess it's not like i don't have anything in my tbr to read. lol

HI Kathy
I enjoyed this series for a different reason. She attacks the whole idea of vampires as a virus contracted by the Templar Knights while fighting in the Crusades. They came home, infected the towns, died and were buried and rose again from the grave. She starts in this book by kidnapping Alex who is a doctor and she is so amazed at how quickly they heal she starts the testing. These people are 400 years old and don't trust doctors. That was the pull to keep reading this series.
