I’m feeling a need to get started on Christmas. I’m not usually in the mood this early, but I’m finding myself looking forward to the holidays more than usual this year. I decided not to question why, but just to enjoy it. So...I’m looking for book and movie recommendations.
I love the Hallmark Christmas movies. And the holiday-movie marathons that are run on cable channels. I love “Prancer” with Sam Elliott, which stands the test of time, even 20 years later. Then there’s “A Christmas Story” (the one about the kid and the BB gun), “ELF”, “The Bishop’s Wife” (with Cary Grant—I haven’t seen the Denzel Washington version, “The Preacher’s Wife”), and “Love, Actually”, which I rewatch no matter what time of year. In fact, I’d forgotten it was set at Christmas until yesterday. Don’t watch it with the kids.
So...movies are easy for me to come up with. Books are a different matter. I don’t have ones I reread every year—do you? Because I’m looking for news ones, even if they’re from years past. And tell us your favorite movies, too. I think we all would love to find new treasures.
To get you started on the season, I’ll choose four names—yes, four—to receive a copy of CHRISTMAS PRESENCE, a Christmas anthology I was part of a couple of years ago, and which contains one of my favorite fantasy stories, “You’re All I Want for Christmas”. If it really could happen to me, I’m headed to the airport right now.
Thanks for helping me find new stuff to love!

Happy Holidays, Susan!
You go, girl!
I like Bad Santa--the movie with Billy Bob Thornton about an alcholic, foul-mouthed loser of a department store Santa. Maybe too gross for you, but still, it's an excellent movie with lots of laughs and I cried at the end.

I liked Santa, Honey. It's an anthology and it was really good. I have a tote filled with Next books I've been collecting and I just ordered a few that I have missing and the one you're offering as a prize is one of the ones that I ordered. What a coincidence.
I love Christmas stories and
I love Christmas stories and Christmas movies. I watched "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Miracle on 34th Street" and "White Christmas" every year before I came to France. The French don't do Christmas as well as we Americans and English do it. They don't even sing carols!
So I guess it would be to much to expect that they would have my favorite Christmas movies on TV or in the store. I can't buy them in the States because they don't play over here. (I'm told it is a different system or something.) I like to read just about any Christmas sotry, but I only re-read the classics.

Susan, I am the same way
I watch the same old Christmas movies and shows. Some of my favorites are Holiday Inn and White Christmas, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Annebelle's Wish, The Year Without a Santa Claus (with Heat Miser and Snow Miser) Then, I like to read new Christmas them books each year. I am all ready to order my December books this Friday and there are some good ones this year.

hmm
Well, Scrooged is one of my favorites. It's a Wonderful Life is on tv every Christmas and at least here in Finland Apollo 13 seems to be becoming another movie they show every Chrismas. And I'm looking forward to seeing Niko & the Way to the Stars.

Yep, they have different formats in Europe and in the States. It was this way with the videos, too. It's so stupid. I guess they want to sell the same product twice. For instance I have this video tape (yes, it was so long time ago) from NDSU International Night and I've never been able to watch it here because you can't play American video tape in video players that are made for European format. My only hope to ever watch it is to find someone who would have the equipments to record that video on a DVD. That I could actually watch on my computer as at least those blank, recordable DVDs are neither European nor American format.
movies
Oh Susan ~ I love those holiday hallmark movies. I like The Note, The List ( I believe it is on Lifetime), The Santa movies with Steve Guttenberg and Crystal Bernard and so many more!!!
Merry Christmas!!!!!

Holiday movies
My all time favorite holiday movie is Home For The Holidays with Holly Hunter. I don't care how many times I see it I still laugh my head off. If you haven't seen it you need to look it up. It's a classic. I love holiday books too, there are a lot of Christmas anthologies and I really enjoy them.

Christmas movies
I love all those Christmas movies on Hallmark. Some of my favorite Christmas movies are the Santa Clause movies and The Polar Express.
Hi Susan~
I love those christmas hallmark movies too. I love Mircle on 34th Street, It's a wonderful Life. Santa Clauses movies with Tim Allen and so many more. Sometimes with the way I work it is hard for me to get into christmas as much like I use to, but I try. Reading a good book can help.

Christmas Movies
My favorite Christmas movies are the holiday classics. Rudolph, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, A Year Without Santa Claus, Frosty the Snowman and Jack Frost. I also enjoy the Hallmark movies.
And out of all the Christmas themed books I've read, I have yet read one I didn't like.
Christmas Stories
I really enjoy Debbie Macomber's Angel series about Shirtley Goodness and Mercy, and frequently re-read them. While I've got other Christmas stories I might re-read, those are definites.
Don't put me in the draw because I've already got an autographed copy of the book - and it was delightful!

FF - isn't there any place around where you live that could convert your movies to European format for you? I haven't done it in a while, but can remember taking a VHS tape from Europe to a specialty video place and they had the equipment to copy the European tape to a North American format. That one was for work, but a few years later, my husband was given a VHS of a movie he had seen in Australia in the theatres. Same thing - the format didn't work, so he went to the same place and for a very reasonable price they made a copy in the right format for him.
It was much less than buying a second copy in the right format - even if it had been available.

book and movie
Skipping Christmas by John Grisham is awesome and funny and then there is the movie version of that Christmas with the Kranks with Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis. It's also funny. When I first got the book I was relectant to read because I thought "John Grisham Oh no another courtroom book" but this was so totally opposite. and the kids can watch this movie too

The only problem with that is I'm cheap and in France that would cost a bomb.

Well
Well, it really isn't a christmas type movie, but it is my most all time favorite movie. "Empire of the Sun." I truly recomend (sp?) that anyone who hasn't seen it yet, try to.

Here goes....
I only have one book in my "to-be-reread" pile, and I read it every couple of years. Not Christmas related, though.
Movies, on the other hand, I DO watch over and over again when I'm visiting with family for the Christmas holidays. Standards usually include (1) Miracle on 34th Street; (2) It's a Wonderful Life; (3) Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer; and (4) How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the original movie, although I enjoyed Jim Carrey's version too). Movies I have seen more than once over the years have included (1) (Chevy Chase's) National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation; (2) (Jonathan Taylor Thomas's) I'll Be Home for Christmas; (3) Home Alone (on television year-round); and (4) Polar Express.
Good luck with your list that's being checked twice!
