This is probably controversial, but what's the smartest thing to do if you're considering publishing in several different sub-genres? I've heard (don't know if it's true) that once you've acquired a 'name' for yourself in a genre, you can spoil your fan-base (not sure if this is the right term) by switching to something a little different. If that's the case... is it better to use a different name for each genre you write? Love to hear from others who've mulled this over.

You should also consider your family . . .
I have a friend who didn't choose a pen name but now that she has a school-aged child, wonders if she should have. No, she doesn't write erotica (I think most of those authors do choose a pen name) but she still doesn't want attention directed at herself when they're in situations where the child should be the focus.
You should ask some of your pubbed authors at your local RWA chapter. I'm sure they have stories. The ones who have been around a long time might have been told that they had to have a pen name (yes, I know people who were).
You should also ask this question over in the writer forums. More people who write might see it.

Penn makes a great point...
I realize it doesn't really answer your base question, but IF I were ever to get to a publishing point I will choose a pseudonym.
While I will defend that there is nothing "wrong" with the genre I LOVE to read and write to the death, I don't want to offend people who disagree. I don't want my preferencein genre to cloud someone's opinion of myself or my family.
I don't plan on being as good as Debbie Macomber or Nora Roberts, although what wannabe doesn't dream, but it would be hard for me to make a "name" for myself. While I want to write words that make people beg for more, that inspire people to look at their lives and their world differently, and that impact society for generations to come--I'm not sure I want the drama that comes with it!

Based on...
some of the crazy attacks I've seen leveled at authors lately on the internet, I think a pseudonym is practically a must. Heck, I'm starting to think that as a reviewer I should have gone with a pseudonym based on some of the craziness out there!
And as far as for different genres... I know it helps me as a reader know which books by a particular author are geared to what I like.

Thanks for the advice,
Thanks for the advice, Penn.
I'll post the question to a forum, because I may be seriously faced with having to make this decision in the near future. Hope so anyway! I'm waiting to hear back from SSE's assistant editor (sent him my requested manuscript), and I'm sitting on my hands waiting. I'm definitely a newbie to all of this, and it shows! I had to print up a list of acronyms just to keep my head above the water - LOL! Noticed the tag at the bottom of your comment. Is anyone free to join in your blog?
Hey, Teachtoreach, I
Hey, Teachtoreach, I totally agree with the POV of altering people's opinions. I've been thinking a lot about that. Fame is not all it's cracked up to be. And, admittedly, I have a lot of
prudishpeople in my family (I love 'em though) who definitely won't approve of my novels. I'd really hate to offend anybody. Also, my six-year-old daughter would be greatly affected. If I adopt a pseudonym, I can maybe have the best of both worlds.By the way, I saw that you're a Brownie leader. My little Katie is in our local Daisy Scouts. She's getting ready to convert over to Brownies in May. I love taking her to her meetings and interacting with the other Daisy moms. She's also in gymnastics, and it's a tight schedule. My question is, with all you're in charge of, plus being a teacher, when the heck do you have time to blog! LOL! I'd be dead. Takes a lot of energy to keep on top of the kids! You're my
heroheroine!I'm not worthy....
as a matter of fact, I'm insane! I keep trying to resign from positions only to find that I've managed to volunteer for two more!
I am trying to make a concerted effort to reduce my "responsibility" so that I can find time to write. Hanging out here is one of my coping mechanisms. Wasting time somehow makes me feel better about being so busy. Sad, but true!

But does it work?
Every one knows your other name anyway......
Everyone knows that Sherrilyn Kenyon is Kinley MacGregor (Maybe when your name is MacGregor, it is easier to write about Scots?)
Or books will say Stephen King, writing as as Richard Bachman..so whats the point?
Anne Rice also goes by a couple of other names (that I cant think of at the moment).
I guess in the case of Anne Rice, that name so associated with the Vampire Chronicles, that she needed a different name for the Sleeping Beauty series.
I always thought my name was a litle bland, so at one time, when I thought of becoming an actress, I was going to call my self Whitley Wilcox (two streets in Hollywood), Holly Wood, Whitley Franklin (more streets in Hollywood).
Or something really outrageous like a character I saw in a animate series (I cant think of the name at the moment) about a black family, where there there there was a girl named something like LaCienega Sepulveda (two streets in Los Angeles)
Or some other unpronouceable street names around here like Cahuenga, Topanga, Tijunga.

I definitely need to use a
I definitely need to use a pseudonym. Especially because I am targeting Spice Briefs and Nocturne. (And then I have one I hope to target to LI... go figure. I may need therapy right? Multiple personalities. Alter ego?
) I have family that would not understand about the nocturnes or the spice briefs... at all. A part of me thinks that even if I used my real name almost no one would make the connection because it seems so unlike me.
Well, to anyone except my closest friends.
Some authors use pen names to separate the books they write which target a particular genre and audience.
I thought I read somewhere that there are several different ways to go about it. One way was so that your real name is not disclosed. If you ever look at some of the books you read, the name on the inside of the book where the copyright is, is different from the author's name on the cover of the book. However, I have also seen, under different publishing companies, where an author's real name was next to the copyright with one publisher and that same author's pen name was next to the copyright with another publisher.
So there has to be some way to keep confidentiality. I would go to a book signing using my pen name as well! LOL.

I am sure....
that you could make it so nobody finds out.
In the case of Sherrilyn Kenyon, it says in the back of her books, who her other self is. You could probably not do that. Your name is Jane Smith and that's that. And not use a picture w/ the bio.

whatever works for you - if you copyright it under your pen name

I love to pretend....
I agree, Teachtoreach - I love to pretend. I used to be a journalist, but found it too monotonous. Exaggeration is lots better than the truth! Ha! In journalism it's all about facts, facts, and more facts. Well, it used to be, although reading today's headlines makes me kind of wonder about that! LOL! Anyway, I love to make up stories and create situations from pure imagination. And I like to read other's creative juice, too!
Stargirl, you and me, we got a similar groove going! My family wouldn't understand my racy writing either. Except my husband. (He likes my writing
<GG>) My very conservative parents would just die if they read my material, trust me. I might be thirty-two, but I'm still their bouncing baby girl! That's why it's probably smart for me to take a pseud. Well, that and the fact that my daughter is now at the age where she's starting to read words that can be a little...well, lets just say words that aren't so easy to explain the meaning of. Mommy needs to be an angelic Brady Bunch type.
H'm.
I've always wondered about the picture thing, too, Beonlyone. I don't see how it can be done except the way Sadhbh suggested - insert someone else's pic. That's hilarious, by the way. I like the idea of the PO box number, too. Of course, in my small town, (picture Andy Griffith's Mayberry) even that might not work.
Amanda~ I have the family

I have the family and town issue too! Small town America is NOT a great place to try to remain annonymous!!! I guess this is just one of those things I'll have to ponder until it happens.
No use worrying about things that don't even exsist yet, is there? And yet it is so much fun to dream of seeing your name (or pseudonym) on the cover of book in stores all across the world!!!

sub-genres
wow, this is great conversation. And I am glad to see that other people wonder out loud on this subject also. When you get 'the call' and decide, do you need to get a business license set up? Your name, other name, how does that work? just curious
Hi, Nett....I have no idea
Hi, Nett....I have no idea about a special license, but gosh, I hope it's not that complicated - but if it is, a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do! I've submitted a manuscript that I'm waiting to hear back on from SSE. If I get the 'call' (and I'm sitting on my hands waiting!), then I imagine I'll be able to ask the editor about the pseudonym. I just thought I'd get everybody's opinion and advice on the subject right now, because it's not something I've heard discussed much.
Let me tell you, if you haven't figured it out already, that eharlequin is addictive. The more you're on here, the more you'll probably fall in love with the forum and blogs. In my case, though, I really need to get my BICHOK and and get to writing again! LOL!
I still say you need to ask the pubbed authors in your RWA
chapter. There has to be a difference between a name on the cover that isn't the same as the one on the copyright page vs. when they match. If you open Evelyn Vaughn's books to the copyright page, you see her real name. If you open Meredith Fletcher's books to the copyright page, you see "Meredith Fletcher" and he/she's really someone else.
Other things to consider if you write for more than one genre is can you move your pen name with you? RWA took care of that for the romance genre (I've been told that it used to be you couldn't move your name from one house to the other but that's no longer the case but since I'm not a writer, I don't know for sure). As an example of what I mean about the genre/mobility thing, Lorraine Heath writes under 3 names b/c she also writes YAs for two houses and has to use two different names for them. But maybe she could use just one name for her YAs now and started writing before the author could move his/her name. I don't know . . . it's just another thing for you to find out and consider. Of course, she didn't want her YA readers picking up her romances, so she would be writing under at least 2 names.
The experienced authors -- esp. the ones who have been around for at least 15 years -- can give you the real scoop.

You're right, Penn. I
You're right, Penn. I do need to investigate the RWA. In fact, I've printed up a membership application from their website, although Harlequin is chalked full of information, too.
I was just reading about - of all authors - Dr. Seuss. My daughter loves his books. A far cry from romance, I know, but he's one of the best-known authors in the world. Anyway, it's not common knowledge that he wrote under a few different pseudonyms. Most of them were variants of his real name - Theodor Seuss Geisel. I thought it was interesting to know that Seuss didn't just write children's books, although that's what he's best known for.
I have so many interests that I'll just have to explore different sub-genres. The cool thing about the romance industry nowadays is that there are so many subs - romantic suspense, romantic mysteries, romantic paranormals, and the list goes on.... However, most people kind of like to stick with reading only one or two of these sub-genres. I think this is why authors don't want to confuse their readers by publishing different styles under the same name.
TTYL!
Great topic
i'm all for using a pen name since i know my mom would be appalled at the racier stuff i've written (heck, i embarrass myself)
i've considered using the name my birth mother put on my "original" birth certificate in place of the name i grew up with (since i was adopted at birth). i guess, if you think about it, i've always had two names - so technically i'd be using my "real" name.
in this era of close to nil privacy, i think an alternate ego is almost a must. just my two cents...

But, if you're like me, you love your Mayberry town.
upside to is that I have so many friends and family living close by.
The downside is that I have so many friends and family living close

I actually live in a small town 20 miles from the small town I grew up in! This one is even SMALLER than my original one! Here I have the advantage of NOT knowing everything about everyone, but I "learn" a little more every year! DH's family is here. Not so excited about that. However, I like the fact that I can be involved in anything I want around here. There aren't any applications to be on a planning committee...not too many overly-wealthy people...love the fact that I don't HAVE to use correct grammar all the time...hate the fact I have to drive at least 1/2 an hour to the nearest Wal-Mart....hate that the nearest mall is 1.5 hours away...hate the fact that the nearest bookstore is 1.5 hours away...love the fact that my kids are being raised in an atmosphere of good 'ole hometown America.

Oh, by the way, I read your bio that you're getting married. Congratulations! We romance readers and writers tend to be CRAZY about weddings!
Thanks, Nett, for the encouragement. I doubt that I'll need to post a blog if my novel is accepted, you'll probably be able to hear me screaming with excitement! Ha!
I just about choked, Teachtoreach, when you said you live 1.5 hours from a mall and a bookstore! How do you survive? LOL! I guess I must be the luckier small town girl since there's an outlet mall about five miles out of town. And it has (I'm not rubbing this in, honest, hee hee) a BOOKSTORE!
But I do have to drive thirty minutes to Walmart! So take comfort!
Hey, think of poor me, several hundred miles from the nearest
bookstore, so I'm obliged to buy all my books online, except for my very rare trips home to Ireland
But while I don't have the pleasure of browsing in reality, I'm having great fun reading all the books I browsed online
And
I'm living in a very small town/village that doesn't even have shops,
though there are a few supermarkets within a five mile radius
Who needs shops when you have a good TBR

I wouldn't need a pseudo, most of the locals can't read English anyway

A downside to living in France?
Are you kidding, Sadhbh? Can there possibly be such a thing as a downside to living in the country of amore? That's amazing. I barely remember any of my French (in fact, I probably just misspelled amore), and sadly I took the language class for two years in school! I envy you! Except the bookstore thing - can't envy that.
Say, can I trade places with you for a while - just long enough for me to write a SD or HBZ set in France? Ooh, yeah, I'm liking this idea better as I type. I can even take on a French Pseudonym. I'm sure nobody would mind too much. Just kidding! LOL! But it sure does sound romantic!
River Cruise through France
Sadhbh, I'll be cruising down the Rhone in a few weeks. I'm so excited I can hardly stand myself. Do you live near the Rhone? I'd love to meet one of the people I've been blogging with.
I start in Paris May 17, go to Burgandy (Beaune), Chalon-sur-Saone, Tournus, Macon, Lyon, Tournon, Tain L'Hermitage, Viviers, Avignon, Arles and Nice. It's not my first trip to France and I do speak some French (I've been listening to my French tapes to practice getting my ear back) but, this trip is going exactly where I want to go with the exception of Pau! And the kicker is, it is going to be filmed! That's right, Burt Wolf is filming a documentary on this trip. Besides all these other good things, I have a childhood pen-pal who lives in Arles and I'd like to find him again. So, in the future, you all will get to see me! The only down things are the sinking dollar
and the fact that the temps will only be in the 60's F. and that is winter weather to us Floridians! I want to go so bad!
France trip
Have a wonderful time in France! I want to go someday as well! I took French in HS and actually still remember quite a bit of it. LOL I amaze my co-workers every so often with a bit of French conversation with my French Canadian clients.
