Anyone up for a buddy read of The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova

Debbie (debiw) and I are getting ready to do a buddy read since both of us have been wanting to read the book for a while. And since it's SOOO long I'm thinking I may need the encouragement a buddy read gives to finish the book. LOL We don't have a date yet, but it will likely be within the next week. We're just waiting to see when the audio is available at Debbie's library (I own it from Audible).

If you're interested in joining us, respond here and we'll keep everyone posted on when we'll start.

Count me in...

I picked this up a while ago, but haven't gotten to it...

The great gift is the passion for reading. It is cheap [Hah! It most certainly is not!], it consoles, it distracts, it excites. It gives knowledge of the world and experience of a wide kind. It is moral illumination. ~ Elizabeth Hardwick

you're in SilverFire!

as soon as we find out when Debbie can get a copy from the library, we'll let you know so we can all star at the same time.

I have the print already

and requested the audio from the library.  I can start with the print version and switch to audio later if you guys want to go ahead and get started.

Already read

I would but I've already read it. Read it last year so it wouldn't count for me again. My daughter had this I'll check to see if she gave it back to me. I may have sold it to Half Price books as I didn't want to keep it. I'll check and get back cause if I still have it I can send it to you.

Buddy reads!

What a great idea....I listened to the audio version of this book and discovered that although I might not have been able to get through it in book format, I was a captive commuter and had nothing else to do while I was occupied behind the wheel and was able to finish the novel.  I confess I'm getting a little tired of the rehashing of the whole vampire mystique, but this one had an interesting enough premise and mystery to make it stand out.  The narrator was quite good as well.  Often I find the car noises can drown out the narration to make a frustrating read...a lot depends on the sound quality and the talents of the narrator.  Anyone else find this to be true?

RE: Buddy reads!

That's a big part of why i decided to go audio for this one. It's SOOO long if i tried reading the book I'd get tired of just holding the darn thing! LOL

And i figure listening on my MP3 player I can do that at work, at play, wherever and may be able to follow along better.

I have noticed that some performers get drowned out by outside noises too. Some I have to really crank up the volume to hear, though i suppose that could be the recording as well. But yes, I know exactly what you're talking about.

Oh that would be great!

I would appreciate it if you still have it, Deb!  And Kelley, I can say after trying to read this one in print last year that my hands and arms were hurting from holding it and lugging it around.  What I read I enjoyed but sheesh, it was so darn heavy!!!

Too funy Debbie. The sad

Too funy Debbie. The sad thing is, I can believe it! There's a reason I waited for MMPB of all the outlander books. LOL Didn't want to lug those huge heavy books around! Historian is the same problem.

I looked

I looked through everything and then called Jennifer and she said I sold it back already. Sorry Debi. That was one I knew I'd never want to read again. Enjoyed it once but that was enough.

Thanks anyway!

The library is sending me a copy soon so I'll get to listen to it then.  Thanks for checking, though!

let me know when you know

let me know when you know you will have it and the three of us will start reading then. :-)

Only two weeks...

For some reason, they only allow two weeks for this particular audio and no renewals.  Makes NO sense as it is SO long you think they'd allow longer if anything.  I started today just to get a jump on things since, well, I've got it for a shorter time.  But again, I have the print to switch to if I have to.  Or I'll just pay a late fee!
