On our boards, we often talk about the things we do other than writing -- several authors have other creative talents, such as painting, weaving, sports, etc, and I'm sure readers do, as well. I thought I'd share mine, which is quilting. This is a picture of a quilt I made this past fall for my niece, and it came out very nicely -- it was my first queen size piece. The pattern is called Sunlight and Shadows, or, Roman Stripe. This was so large that I did the piecing, but not the quilting, since I couldn't handle it on my small machine, but I find I like the piecing process best, anyway. Normally I make smaller pieces, two of which I have auctioned off at Brenda Novak's Diabetes Auction (which is firing up for the new auction already, in a few months). I think it's really important to have different creative pursuits.
When I spend so much time with words, quilting gives me a visual, tactile thing to do, and a different kind of expression. I also like gardening, and doing various remodels on our house. One thing I liked in particular was setting tile. Tiling is kind of like quilting, but with ceramic, I guess. I'll try to find a picture of a backsplash I did in another post.
What kinds of creative pursuits do you enjoy? Share!

Beautiful
Sam--that's a gorgeous piece. Your niece must have been so pleased. Thanks for posting it.
I have a top I pieced that I love but I haven't had time to quilt it. Did you find someone to quilt yours through a quilt shop? I hand quilted the first one I did. I loved that process but now I have a full-time job plus this pesky writing thing.
After that first quilt I did a small one that I didn't even quilt--it was a baby gift for my nephew. It's working fine without quilting. I also made two tops (a twin and a queen) that are unquilted. Follow through much?
Thanks for putting this up.

Cafts and hobbies
I like to scrapbook but don't get the chance to do it often. I like refinishing furniture and small home improvement projects. And my crafty side usually takes over around the holidays.
My most recent crafts were some stationary sets I made for my nieces for Christmas. They each got cards, paper, and envelopes that I had made inside a photo box that I decorated (to match the stationary). I also included pens and address books. They turned out great.

I wish we could post more pics so I could see the things you do...
Ellen, as I've quilted more, I find the quilting is actually the step I like least, which I think happens -- it does tend to break down that people either like the piecing or the quilting better, and so you see a lot of collaborations. Many show quilts are pieced and quilted by different people. There are shops here and individuals who will quilt for very reasonable rates (I think, considering the time and effort that they save me).
This quilt, theoretically, could be done on a home machine, but it would be difficult. Lots of rolling, flipping, clamping and unclamping, and I thought I would feel weird having someone else do the quilting, but I didn't. I chose the design and colors, and I did all the sewing and binding. So that's good for me, LOL.
I think scrapbooking would be addictive! I did some pictures boxes for my living room over the holidays, one of my family and one of dh's family, and it was fun but took a lot of time... I can't afford one more hobby, but I have loved the ones I've seen. I think my blogmate Tawny does scrapbooking, but I'm not sure...
It's fun to hear the other things people do... arts and crafts are really such a creative outlet...

Another craft
That has always drawn my attention is paper-making -- does anyone do that? I had a friend who was always collecting lint from the dryers, LOL, and that kind of thing, to make paper -- is that what you did for stationary, Shannon?
I think that would be cool.

No paper-making here...
Sam-
Sorry to disappoint but I didn't actually make the paper. I used scrapbook and computer paper. It was more of a planning and assembling type of project. But they turned out really great.
BTW I love quilts. My great grandmother used to quilt. They were beautiful. I don't sew but I'm great at cutting and pinning.

Quilt
Sam - The quilt is beaultiful. I love quilting as well. I always say it is therapeutic and keeps me from snacking in front of the TV since I love to hand quilt small quilts and wall hangings. I wish I had a long arm quilt machine. I wrote a ms once about a woman who falls for the dewing machine repairman. It was a hoot, and I was much younger when I wrote it.
Lovely work!
You do lovely work, Sam. I, too, enjoy quilting and the piece work is the best part. Kind of like putting a puzzle together - which is another favorite activity of mine. I must confess, though, my major other creative outlet is scrapbooking. I think of it as multitasking - organizing photos, reflecting on fun times and therapy.
-Tasha
Tasha
Betty & Tasha
I thought about getting a home longarm at one point, but they are so costly, and truthfully, I think in the end I'm glad I didn't rush into the purchase, because I may not have used it as much. The one they have down at the shop is *huge*, and they can do so much better work, and I figured I'd have to have them quilt somewhere around 30 large quilts for it to add up to the price of a good longarm and rack, and I don't know if I will end up making that many! LOL I do like to hand quilt, and I couldn't agree with you more -- when you are handling material, snacking is out!
Tasha, I did enjoy going through the pictures when I did my picture boxes, but I think really good scrapbookers have creativity far beyond me. It is all like a puzzle, true -- a friend of mine, who also quilts, her husband teases us both that we're crazy because we take whole pieces of fabric, cut them into little pieces, and then sew them back into one big piece again, LOL. Well.... yeah.
I am going to try punch needle embroidery, the mini kind -- I think they are so pretty in wall hangings, and I'd like to learn to sew some basic clothes. Those are next on the list. My mom is probably laughing somewhere, as she tried to teach me sewing, and I was horrible at it, but I think now I might be able to do better. ;)

Sam - I never heard
I never head of the mysteries but I am sure I would propbably enjoy them.
If you search for
"quilting mysteries" on Amazon, they pop up - -there's a new one, out last year (or it might be 2008, I can't remember) that had some really good comments... Someone slashed to death with a rotary cutter... I know that's not funny, but for some reason the idea makes me chuckle every time. ;)

i enjoy scrapbooking and
i enjoy scrapbooking and gourmet cooking and baking. i took a knitting class last year and really enjoyed that. I would love to get really creative with different colors of yarn and always have good intentions of doing that while i watch tv...but, if i watch tv it is usually because i am too tired to read and if i am too tired to read, i am too tired to knit.
i used to do counted cross-stitch but i kind of made so much stuff that it was almost overkill. counted cross stitch EVERYWHERE...on towels, oven mitts, book marks, eyeglass cases, framed on the wall, coasters...i gave a lot away as gifts.

Teresa
That's so funny on the cross stitch -- it does get to be that way, doesn't it? I was giving everyone smaller decorative quilt pieces constantly for a year or so, wall hangings, table runners, pot holders, and then thought, I need to find new crafts, break it up a bit, LOL.
Have you ever done punch needle?
I can't knit to save my life -- have tried. My mother used to knit some beautiful things -- it's really an art.

Beautiful Quilt
Sam, the quilt is gorgeous, lucky niece!
I'm not that crafty of a person but I married an artist. He is always telling me about some project he has planned and I keep telling him I am a visual person. For some reason, I just can't picture a painting before it is done. Weird since I seem to have no problem pictureing a scene when I read about it in a book.
I know that Robin Owens paints and Mercedes Lackey makes jewelry. Must be something that makes so many authors creative in other ways.

Hi Kim :)
I think you're right. I am not a visual person, or at least I didn't think I was. I can't imagine how quilts will look, for instance, just from the bolts of fabric I choose... the end result is always kind of a surprise for me, too, but that makes it fun, how to see how it progresses. Kind of keeps it interesting.
I don't really visualize in my writing, either, though I am trying to do that more these days... it's difficult, but I think you can develop it. My husband is also the more visual one, he understands color and pattern, and has taught me a lot while we've remodeled our house, etc and I can get the basic concepts now. I may try more visualization exercises with my writing -- I think it would be helpful. It's like anything in your brain, I guess, you can train it if you work at it. :)

fun with colors
my mom quilts. i wish i had the patience. maybe someday... i do enjoy going to the fabric shop with her and picking out different fabrics to put together in a quilt.
i have never tried punch needle. i actually bought a book on it with some really great projects...but, i'm ashamed to say i never actually tried it. maybe i will dig that out...
i think my favorite thing with knitting, quilting, scrapping, even ccs is the colors. i love putting different color combos together and seeing the end result.
My Blog
I like playing with colors, too...
It's funny, everyone says you need patience to quilt, but I normally feel like the least patient person on the planet -- not my strong suit. LOL
You'll have to let me know how the punch needle goes... I'm hoping I might get supplies to try it for my b'day in a few weeks, but we'll see. If not, I'll go get them myself, and we can see how it works together! LOL
This all reminded me of all the candle making supplies I have in the basement -- I used to make candles by the boatloads, for the house, for gifts. When we moved, there really wasn't room in the old kitchen to do it, and I thought I might use the extra stove down cellar, and then we got rid of it, but all that stuff is still therer. I almost never make them in summer, but maybe I'll try getting back into it again next fall... I have more than enough on my list at the moment. My current quilt top, for our bed, is 32 rows of 51 3" triangles (do the math, LOL) and they each have to be sewn one at a time, no strip piecing, so that will keeo me occupied for a bit, though I am determined to have it to the quilt shop for quilting by end of Spring...

I quilt too! sort of...
Sam, I loved the quilt picture and am actually jealous that you figured out how to get the picture posted, LOL. I've been trying to post pictures of my bichons for a couple of days cause Holly Jacobs wanted to see them. I shrunk them down to 160 x 160 pixels, and they were less than 75 kb but still they showed up as a red x.
ANYway.. My mom always quilted and I did some quilt tops growing up with her... and had a resurgence into the craft about a year ago and started several pieces (I did all hand sewing on the tops with my mom..but took some wonderful online classes to teach me all the new methods using machines and rotary cutters, etc.. THEN I started blogging my books on eharlequin and quilting fell to the wayside.
I, like you, really love playing with color and textures. As for scrapbooking, I've done some of that too (so many crafts, so little time) What I liked about scrapbooking was that you could use quilt patterns to design your pages. I got a book that was showing some of that and it really makes pretty pages and that way I can play with neat blocks and not have to make a whole quilt, LOL.

Scrapbooking and Quilting Mysteries .. needlework too!
Ok Ladies,
I went and drug out my box of these so I could tell you who they were. I haven't actually READ any of them yet.. just started collecting them once I found the authors:
Monica Ferris: Patterns of Murder (the first three of her needlework mysteries in one volume)
Earlene Fowler: Fool's Puzzle, etc Quilting Mysteries
Laura Childs: Photo Finished, etc Scrapbooking Mysteries
and then as a bonus for you animal lovers:
Georgette Livingston: Unlucky Collie Caper (A Jennifer Grey Veterinarian Mystery)
and
Lydia Adamson: Dr. Nightingale Comes Home (Veterinarian)
Ok, the librarian in me will stop now.

I should go find the ones I saw on Amazon and list those... and maybe read a few... as if my TBR isn't already far out of control. I love having my ereader and ebooks, but being able to download books immediately really did expand my TBR quickly...
I like the idea of organizing according to a quilt block... a friend of mine who quilts, her adult son took blocks of wood, and handpainted them in quilting patterns to hang on the wall, and you know, it hits me that this would be a neat way to design wall or floor tile -- I love to tile, too. I did our kitchen backsplash and the bathroom this past summer...

Beautiful Quilt
I've picked up a couple of books on quilting but haven't gotten started on anything yet. My craft addiction is embroidery. I've noticed my muse seems to relax and the trouble seems to unstick itself if I spend a couple of hours stitching.
I started out in cross stitch and then branched out into other types of embroidery. I can now embroider clothing (good for dd who loves pretty things on her clothes), and I'm learning ribbon embroidery now. I plan on getting some books on Brazilian embroidery for next winter. It's three dimensional embroidery similar to stump work.

Hey Melissa
Love that pic with the baby!
I would like to learn to embroider more -- I learned to do some french knots and some basics for a quilt top I made, a small one, and I know I've forgotten now. It would be nice to be able to embroider the signature in somewhere, instead of writing it or tagging it on (quilters generally sign their work in some way).
I found going to classes really helps me get motivated -- I take a class now and then at the local quilt shops, and it gets me moving and working on projects, especially after a while not doing anything...

That quilt would look perfect in my bedroom...
Seriously.
I envy all of you who can quilt. I can't cut straight to save my life. My friend quilts, she made me a really cute pillow for Christmas. I can crochet (as my fifteen year old says: half-fast ). But, if I get too engrossed in what I'm watching then it ends up being lop-sided. I used to Xstitch like mad when I was pregnant with my oldest--the fifteen year old. Every wall had something I stitched. He had bibs I stitched and one-sies that he promptly threw up on...all kinds of stuff. Now, there are very few things that I Xstitched up on the wall.
I did ceramics for awhile and found the process of painting very theraputic, then it became expensive and I had all these ceramics and nothing to do with them.
My daughter, who is thirteen wants me to get into scrapbooking with her and she even offered to share one of the smaller books with me and I think I'm going to do it and see how I like it. I want to make the kids their own baby ones so that when they graduate high school that I can hand them a book of them--their lives through the years.
I'm kind of stuck writing wise and I always find that when I'm creative elsewhere, it helps fuel all of my creativity.
Thanks for starting this blog and sharing your quilt. Guess maybe you should make this your Friday Blog over here. Quilts and Crafts by talented author, Sam Hunter.
Rae
Who said it was straight? *LOL*
Hey Rae -- thanks :)
Let's say it's mostly straight. Straight enough. ;)
It was a challenge because of the fabrics - she doesn't like flowers and florals, so she wanted plaids, checks, etc and I'd never used them before, and trying to keep the patterns relatively straight (with the line of the check or plaid) was tough, and often didn't happen. I figure it came out okay anyway - home made stuff has faults -- if you want something perfectly machine made, go to JC Penney, right? :)
I would love to be able to post some other pictures... I would love to see your pictures of things too - I'd hoped others would share on this blog. I want to post some pictures of my tile, but have to figure out where to upload it so I can. I don't think I have a enough to say to do a blog every week, but I hope we can keep this one going -- I enjoy it!
I think scrap-booking would be a blast -- I did ceramics once, too, and you're right -- expensive and eventually, you kind of have enough... Did you see the suggestion above about using quilt blocks to pattern scrapbook pages? That would be neat -- I like your idea about following your kids' journeys that way...

i have always wanted to
i have always wanted to make candles! i love burning candles and it always seemed like it would be fun to make some! can you add fragrance when you make candles?
we are currently "finishing" our basement. i had this great idea of getting those special lights wired into the walls to hang over a counted cross-stitch picture i made...now that the wires are there..i kinda wonder if i was being a little like "hey look at me and what i can do" and also feeling the pressure to work on a kit i started a while ago and put aside when i started knitting.

How I got my pictures posted and one of my quilt.
Sam,
I just spent almost two days trying to get pictures of my bichons posted in my blogs. (the posts are called My precious puppies and My Senior Bichon: MacGyver). I was never able to get the direct upload (using the IMAGE box in our blog post screens) to work. What I finally did was to follow Katherine T's great directions about using the tree key:
My Book Review ---- How I make my book covers
and get a free photobucket account. I did find out that this means you have to leave the photos in the photobucket cause this way you are only linking to them there.

Crystal, that's gorgeous!
OMG, I love the colors and the pattern -- it's really striking!
I have to check out those instructions for posting pics -- thanks -- I'll try to be back with more...
Theresa, hi! :) You can add fragrance, color, all kinds of things (though talk about live and learn, I once added cinnamon sticks, and hadn't learned the proper way to do it, and the sticks actually caught fire from the wick, LOL -- luckily we caught it and all was fine, but it was like, yeah, um... hmmmm. Guess those need to be placed around the edges, away from the flame! LOL).
I liked to use beeswax and soy, too, so you don't get soot and smoke, because fragrances and the smoke actually bother my allergies. They're more expensive, but it's worth it if you have allergies. :)

Wow that's gorgeous. I love the colors!
Sam, thanx it's my favorite pic from her portraits.
I've been tempted to learn how to make candles and soap. It's on my list of stuff I'd like to learn to do someday.
I've a friend who makes ceramics. I can't paint worth a darn. My one attempt looked horrible.
I'll have to look into taking pics of some of my past projects. For some reason I always forget to do that before handing them off. I have very few of my Xstitch stuff, or embroidery for that matter, in the house. I'm always making things for someone else.

sam, i love what you did with all of the colors in each block and also the boxed-check gingham. crystal, i love the red! really pops!

arts and crafts
Sam - Your quilt is beautiful.......you can make me one anytime you want......LOL
I like to 'dabble" in crafts.....somethings turn out good, others ok and some have the look "only a mother could love"........
In November I did a sewing project.......(I had not sewn in 20 years) I made 8 table runners that were 7 mittens sew together......each mitten was almost the size of a place mat.....I did hand sewing on each mitten.....shapes I had cut out using my cookie cutters as patterns....(stars, trees, stockings, gingerbread men, snowmen, bells, candy canes.) I made it so each side was decorated. I was very happy with how they turned out.....gave them to family and friends for presents.
In the past I have done some painting of birdhouses and such......I don't have a very steady hand so I don't do a lot of detail work.....just use bright bold colors.
I also like to put puzzles together....then decopouge them....then I hunt for frames to fit (at garage sales and thrift stores) then paint the frames to match.....I have a bunch that I use to decorate my enclosed front porch....change them every few months. I have 3 in the house as well ....1 in the laundry room is a quilt hanging on a fence.....I thought that was the appropriate place for that one. 1 in the living room I mounted behind a window I had bought at a garage sale....so it give the impression of looking out the window at a porch scene and the flower garden beyond.
I also hand sew christmas ornaments.....this year just a few for my self with the left overs from the runner project....but last year I did 45 of them in 2 weeks for my grandsons pre school class room.
I have made myself 2 tables out of old shutters.....put a light in the bottom and use picture frames for the top so that the light comes through the glass....I made 2 wall shelves out of small shutters.
This year I made myself a christmas cards display -er out of a old bat wing door (like saloon doors)......just added some paint, a few old cards glued on and a chain to hang it from....
My sister helped me make a head board for out guest room out of garden lattice. She used the circular saw.....I am afraid of that one....but will use the jig saw.
I love to try and be creative.....just get such a good feeling when I get a project done.
I hope that this thread keeps up....that others share their project ideas.....
I just bought some scrap fabric and pillow cases in flower prints. Now need to figure out a design or pattern to use them to make a "spring" table runner....
I had better end this as it has gotten long. Thanks everyone for sharing. Lisa

I would love to see a picture of that table you made!! Sounds really clever!! What a great idea!

THanks everyone. I was really excited at how the piece came out.. now if I can ever stop reading long enough to FINISH quilting it, LOL.

Hey Crystal
Thanks for reminding me of that -- I forgot to mention, it's weird, but I am often in the same place in the process on a quilt as I am on a book -- usually, like right now, I am starting new quilts AND starting new books...so it kind of parallels...
I don't know if that's meaningful at all creatively, but I did notice was a kind of wacky cooincidence last year...
