So I liked Kate Hardy in the Medical Romances and decided to try her in a Presents. I have steadfastly avoided the Presents as well, the heroes are not the kind I choose to read about. So what a pleasant surprise this was!
SYNOPSIS: Francesca "Fran" Marsden is having a terrible day. She's just lost a job she loved due to a merger and she feels like a complete failure. Giovanni "Gio" Mazetti spots her at the coffeehouse/cafe he owns and recognizes her office talents immediately. It's a match made in heaven for the well organized Fran and the workaholic Gio. But what happens when their working relationship starts to turn into mutual attraction?
MY THOUGHTS: I can't believe I liked a Presents book! Gio was a phenomenal hero. Yes, he was commitment shy but so was Fran. In fact, she was the more prickly of the two characters as Gio was far more open than she was. And I can't say enough about Gio's family. So much warmth and love shined through his family members that it just made the atmosphere of the entire book so friendly and inviting. In fact, I really liked the way Kate Hardy portrayed family as a whole. She brought such joy to her story that it was hard to stop reading.
I'm very glad I took a chance on this Presents book! Kate Hardy may have hooked this reader in for good!

Interesting
I'm the opposite from you... I love Presents books for the most parts (steamy and fast paced). I'm not such a fan of medical romance though, I just don't find the medical profession and medical disasters an appealing setting for romance and passion.
I am interested in this book, I read the excerpt from it on the website. The hero seems like a nice approachable family guy. And I like that the public kisses start happening in private too (I believe they pretend to be lovers if I remember correctly). I'll keep an eye out for this book.
Love me some Paranormal books (like you Debbie). I just picked up three more Angela Knights and one Amanda Ashley (that won't keep me busy long).
Gio
He really is a nice, approachable family type guy. I really enjoyed seeing him get his happily-ever-after!
Isn't it funny how people will have so very different tastes? I've really fallen in love with the Medical line and only read this one because, well, she was one of the authors from that line.
And oooo... you are in for a treat with more Angela Knight books!

Yeah, different strokes for
Yeah, different strokes for different folks. I like that HPs are pretty much guaranteed happy light passionate reads. With medicals, they can be life and death.. which can get depressing! Seeing women and children have medical emergencies... sad. Sadness = badness to me.
I'm going to bite into the Angela Knight books this weekend. I'm going to make sure I read these Angela Knight books in order. I've got Master of the Moon, Master of Swords, Master of Dragons. And I think that's the order they should be read in cuz the hero's backstories are built up to introduce the next novel's hero. Smoking stories....
Great blog...and now one
Great blog...and now one more book to add to the shopping cart if it's available.
Yeah, different strokes for different folks.
For sure! I really love sad reads. For me, the Medicals are like my light maybe sad readswith an HEA, at least in comparison to me normal sad reads...but I also like light reads too. For me, I guess I just don't really like reading books that are similar back to back for an exttended time.

I love the medicals
I love the medicals and they have their HEA and save lives along the way. Plus all the medical techniques and interesting things I've learned along the way. I like a few Presents but most now are too arrogant for me to swallow. I used to read a lot more of them but now I'm more into the SRS, Nocturnes, and Medicals. I have some more Luna's to try, love the Snyder books and need to blog Fire Study. I think that's part of my problem I like reading so many different genres that I just can't read everything I want to.
Will have to give this author a try as I haven't read hers yet but I do have two in the piles. So now after your review I'm really looking forward to them.

Paisley... I can't take sad
Paisley... I can't take sad reads myself. I read a paranormal romance recently where the heroine crossed over as a vampire and could only spend one night a year with her aging hero.... and it made me sad for a week every time I thought about it. Pooh! I avoid the sad!
Debkc3... you say "most now are too arrogant for me to swallow"... hee. I'm reading lots of older HPs these days. I'm buying the older HPs off of eBay. I do get what you mean about arrogance... it's a careful line with the alpha males. The things I like about alpha males: strong urge to protect the family, dominance, confidence, uncompromising when determined, and they are uber hot in bed. The bad things about alpha males: sometimes they get hypocritical, hurt the heroine's, can't admit they are wrong.
But when you hit a balance and get a GOOD alpha male, then the hero totally sweeps you away with passion and the right amount of romance. I like that.
I love Nocturne's too. And I like Harlequin Blaze because the hero's aren't arrogant and aren't hypocritical about female sexuality. (I always feel bad for heroine's who are expected - and praised - for patiently staying virginal while their hero's bang their way through hoards of women.... eww!)
arrogance
Deb, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with this one. He's not arrogant at all!
Janet... I like some sad books but it just varies. The Medicals really hit the right note for me, though. It was a surprise since I usually read paranormals only.

paranormal authors?
hey debiw... about paranormal books.... so far I've just read a handful of Nocturne's and books by Angela Knight, Amanda Ashley, and Nina Bangs....
Are there any similar authors I should check out? (I like paranormal books with happy clear cut endings... i.e. not a five book series featuring the various loves/adventures of the heroine) Recommendations = good. :)
Start with Stray
Start with Stray and Rogue by Rachel Vincent. Patricia Briggs Moon Called, Blood Bound, and Iron Kissed. Full Moon Rising by Keri Arthur is great and then of course you really should read J.R. Ward starting with Dark Lover. Oh there are so many out there that are good. I could recommend more but don't want to overwhelm you.

(I want to read the descriptions and look at the pretty covers... i'll be back) ;)
ETA:
Back now. I looked up the first two authors you mentioned... I think I wasn't clear.
The first author has a two-book story about Faythe, the second author has a three-book story about Mercy. I'm looking for paranormal books where the hero and heroine get together (and stay together) by the end of the book. ... I like to avoid having to wait for the next book to come out to see whether they stay together. I'm a "need immediate closure" kind of girl.....
Plea to Janet
Love this book of Kate's. And her meds are just as fab.
Just thought I'd comment on Janet's comments and guess ask her from the bottom of my heart to at least try a medical or two first. I think you'll find that there are several people that hang around these blogs that would never have thought to pick up a medical either but are now converts.
Myself, I'm not a huge paranormal fan - as in, if there was a stack of books in front of me and I was allowed to take home a few, the paranormals wouldn't be my first choice. BUT nearly every single paranormal I've read, I've enjoyed. Keri Arthur is unreal and I read Emily Gee for the RITA and her book Thief Without A Shadow is amazing and that RITA is soooo hers!
I guess I'm saying please don't judge the line before giving us a whirl. If you'd like to email me I'll send you one of mine - I'll even make sure it's a happy one

Aw Amy, you're sweet
Aw Amy, you're sweet.
I have read the occasional medical romance, and I probably will read 'em again if I see a story that jumps out at me (it just probably won't be one where the hero/heroine/child are actually sick, lol). I'm not blindly giving up on the genre, like you said, it's about what's on the top of my pile... what I want to grab first. Historical romances aren't my normal fancy either, but occasionally one hits the spot.
You know, I probably wouldn't have jumped into reading paranormal romances if I hadn't read a few Harlequin Nocturne first. Nocturnes = supernaturally terrific sex + ultimate alpha males + destined love + a happy ending for hero/heroine. After the Nocturnes I hit onto paranormal authors like Nina Bangs and Angela Knight that also guarantee those happy endings and smoking scenes. It's kind of expansion of the comfort zone thing.
(I don't think you'll see me expanding into the Steeple Hill zone yet though)
I'll try to be more precise and articulate than I was last year
when I was trying to describe medicals. (This is mostly in resonse to Janet's comments -- and any lurkers who might be out there ;) ).
I think of all the series romance books, the medicals have the most variety. I think that you have to learn the authors. If you have time and like a variety of action and sensuality, then by all means, explore on your own. Read them all for a year and that will pretty much give you several examples of each author.
There are no sensuality rules in the medicals, so you have everything from no sex, not even behind closed doors, to a Blaze/Desire/Presents level. Most of the authors tend to stay in a range there (comparing their own books -- e.g. a Kate Hardy to a Kate Hardy), so you know picking up say Olivia Gates, that you'll get steamy. Amy Andrews steamy but less than Olivia. Gill Sanderson, some sex but sweet scenes and usually only one or two per book. Josie Metcalf you might not get any sex at all.
The intensity or sweetness level is also from one end of the spectrum to the other. I think (rightly or wrongly) that you get more variety here from individual authors (comparing between their own books -- an Amy Andrews compared to an Amy Andrews). An example might be Jennifer Taylor. If her books are set in a hospital in the UK, they're going to be a lot less action/adventure than the ones she sets in her aid organization. A Marion Lennox or Meredith Webber is going to be closer to a sweet and tender read than a Kate Hardy.
Those are things you need to learn either on your own or by asking for help in selecting your medical romance reads if your time and or money are limited and you have to choose just one or two.
They are all also reasons why some of us love the med roms. If you were forced to have only one set of series romance books to read each month, I would say to get the med roms b/c you could probably find something to suit your mood in that line. I think that b/c the med rom line encompasses bits of all the other lines. You just need to know which one to pick up when you want your action/adventure, which to choose for when you want to read something with high sensuality (read: hot sex) mood and which to choose for your sweet and tender read.

Penn... it's good that you can get those different kind of reads in one line. I see that as a positive. I do mostly read the Blaze/Presents/Nocturne series though, so that puts me in the "consistently steamy" reader group. My idea of variety at this point is "Presents/Blaze steam" vs. "Nocturne paranormal sexy" vs. "humour books". And really, I'm happy with what I'm reading atm. I've bought a couple hundred older Presents off eBay... I read very fast, but I am set for a while. *grin*
I'm going to keep reading the books I've bought already. I admit I'm a bit of a closed-minded category reader that likes to read in a zone. My zone expands slowly, but if I do come across a good Med Rom or a particular author I like, that's when I'll be motivated to read more of that type. Maybe if I didn't have hundreds of books at my fingertips, I'd be more eager to explore and find new books to read! No offense meant....
Meds and Aplha's
Hi Janet - sweetness back at ya, babe
I posted another comment recently on someone's elses blog - I think it was sabdh's - about the medical alpha. I think this is another area where meds really rock because you have an absolute Alpha make - gorgeous, successful, risen to the top of his field, determined, more often than not arrogant and doesn't suffer fools gladly - BUT being doctors or some kind of health care provider, there is a heart of gold underneath it all.
Thanks Penn for bringing up what I think is one of the most misunderstood things about meds - the level of sensuality. You want sex Janet - I give good sex
(even if I do say so myself). I love to read steamy and that's most definitely what I write.
Not likely to be turning to a Steeple Hill either....

Amy... that just put a big grin on my face. I feel like I've almost been propositioned m'dear! I'm going to have to look you up and see what you write now, just out of curiousity.
It's so true... I want sex/sensuality in my reads! I read two somewhat recent HPs, and it shocked me when there was no sex or even any lusty fooling around or lusty glances in 'em. One has expectations that one's heart rate will INCREASE during books of a certain line. Bring the heat....
*somewhat recent ... keep in mind I buy old HPs off ebay from the 70s, 80s, 90s! LOL
Just from what I've already read....
I completely agree with Penn. I've been VERY impressed with the Medical Romance line because of the variety. No matter what my mood, I can find a Medical Romance that fits it. Now I haven't read that many as this is the first year I've tried them but I don't often go back and try to collect as many of a line as I can in such a short format. In fact, I tend to avoid short books like these as a general rule because in the past I've found them almost like a snack that only makes me gain weight as I'm still hungry afterwards (although I'm learning authors that I like in any line). But the Medical Romances, despite their shortness of pages, really have such a full story that I'm hooked!
