The Best Love Song Of All Time?

I have a secret passion: making soundtracks for my books. I make the soundtrack before I start, while I’m still fleshing out the characters, and then I play it over and over (and over!) while I write. (I’m sure the neighbours have strong opinions on this topic…)

It can’t be any old song to get onto one of my soundtracks, it has to suit the mood of that story, or say something about the problems this couple is facing. After I’ve finished writing a story, every time I hear a song from its soundtrack, it pulls me straight back into that story – it’s *their* song, just like real life couples often have *their* song.

My first Desire, Claiming His Pregnant Bride, had some Elvis – I thought the classic feel of The Wonder of You suited the characters, and Always On My Mind suited the workaholic hero’s thoughts about the heroine.

I’m making a new soundtrack right now, so I’m listening to love songs in every spare moment, trying to choose the perfect ones for this hero and heroine. The interesting thing is, people have been offering me suggestions and I'm fascinated by the type of love songs that appeal to different people.

So, tell me, what’s your favourite love song of all time? Do the love ballads like Whitney’s I Will Always Love You and Berlin’s Take My Breath Away melt your heart? Or are you more keen on cute songs like The Romantics’ What I Like About You and Sonny and Cher’s I Got You, Babe? Or how about raw songs like the INXS classic Never Tear Us Apart or U2’s All I Want Is You?

What’s the best love song of all time? Enquiring minds need to know. Laughing

How about Unchained Melody?

It's the sort of song that'll give you goosebumps everytime. And wasn't Ghost just a brilliant movie. I also love Eternal Flame by the Bangles in, I think, 1989. There's so many great ones. I love the idea of having a soundtrack for your stories, Rachel Cool

Unchained Melody

Unchained Melody was a favourite of mine for the longest time. Probably because my ex-boyfriend used to sing it for karaoke, half French/half English

Ooh, good question

Al Green's "Let's Get Married Today" always give me chills (the good kind!). "I Got You Babe" really is a fabulous song too. As is "River Deep, Mountain High" by Ike and Tina Turner. I do find that the real life relationship slightly diminishes my enjoyment, though. Lots of great Elvis songs, too. It's hard to choose!

My books don't really have a soundtrack, but they can be influenced by what I'm listening to at the time. The radio station I listen to in the car was playing loads of 70's disco while I was writing my Feb book "Millionaire's Secret Seduction" and my characters ended up at at Studio 54 reunion party Cool

Soundtracks

I make soundtracks as well...I'll hear a song and think, this is perfect.

Don't hate me, but I cannot stand Unchained Melody. I used to love it, but now, not so much.

My favorite love song? I have a few, but when I pondered this question, the first song that popped into my head was Aerosmith's "Don't Wanna Miss A Thing".

Rae

Writing to music

And here I thought I was the only one that put together a special selection of songs for each book!  How bizarre.  I have to confess, I don't go to the trouble of making an actual CD.  I'll load the songs onto iTunes on my computer in a special folder and then hit "auto replay."  I remember for one of my books...Bridegroom on Approval, maybe--it was one of the Fairytale Wedding/Cinderella Ball ones and he dressed up like Zorro for the masked ball where they met--I played the soundtrack to Zorro over and over and over for that book.  It's still one of my favorite books (even if I can't remember the title!).  Another book was Don Juan de Marco.  And now I'm going to hear Bryan Adams' Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman in my head all day, lol.  But there's another great love song.

As for favorite love song?  I really don't have one because I'll get bored with one and switch to another.  One of my all-time favorites, though, is Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.  I could listen to that over and over all day--and have.

Great topic, Rachel!

I am a sucker for love songs! I have more than one favorite but I'd have to say Elvis' I Can't Help Falling in Love with You is my all-time favorite. I also love All My Loving by the Beatles, Evergreen by Barbara Streisand, My Valentine by Martina McBride and When You Say Nothing at All by Alison Krauss.

Love Songs

First I have to wholeheartedly second "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers and Bryan Adams' "Heaven".  In fact, I'm convinced by listening to his music that Bryan Adams is deeply in love with a woman because so many of his songs sound like they come from the soul, such as:

  • Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman  (the lyric "When you can see your unborn children in her eyes, then you know you really love a woman" just melts me every time)
  • When You Love Someone
  • Please Forgive Me
  • Everything I Do I Do It For You
  • All For Love
  • Here I Am

He has that slightly raspy quality to his voice that gives me goosebumps, too.

Other good ones are:

  • Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours"  (a sweet, happy love song)
  • Art Garfunkel's "I Only Have Eyes for You" (sweetly romantic.  We played this one at our wedding for our first dance)  or "Angel Claire" (a kind of poignantly sweet love song)
  • Association "Never My Love"  (sweetly romantic)
  • Paul Stukey's "The Wedding Song"  (for obvious reasons -- this was played at our wedding)
  • Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" (romantic and kind of sexy)
  • Joe Cocker's "You Are So Beautiful"  (sweetly romantic)
  • Extreme's "More Than Words"  (This one came as a total surprise to me because Extreme is, as I understand it, a heavy metal group.  I heard this one on the radio and went into a store to find it for our anniversary one year.)
  • The Beatles' "Yesterday" (very sadly romantic)

  • Extreme's "More Than Words"  (This one came as a total surprise to me because Extreme is, as I understand it, a heavy metal group.  I heard this one on the radio and went into a store to find it for our anniversary one year.)
  • JV, they have other pretty songs as well. Ever heard their song, Hole hearted?

It's Your Love by Tim and Faith

I love country music and imho I don't think anyone does romance better than the country ballads. Tim and Faith have a wonderful duet called, "It's Your Love" and when I saw the video, Faith was pregnant and looking as usual, so beautiful.  So when they sang those lyrics to each other as they were having their first child, I think it was soooo amazing.  The words to that song just HIT me.  Recently, they also released a song called, "I Need You."   Both are great.

I had to think for awhile on this, but I have to say my favorite is Carrying Your Love With Me by Goerge Strait. Loved that song when I was little and still love it now.

    Okay I'm dating myself

but I really love I've Had the Time of My Life by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes (Love theme from Dirty Dancing). Loved the movie and the song both.

I just love Unchained Melody by almost anyone.

I also love Olivia Newton John's I Honestly Love You.

    Minna,

No, I haven't heard that one.  I did find a compilation album of love ballads by heavy metal and hard rock bands that had "More Than Words" on it.  It's really a beautiful song.  I'll have to look for that one and give it a listen!

[Edited to add:  Just listened to it on YouTube.  These are the only two songs I've ever heard by them, and I begin to wonder if they are, indeed, a heavy metal band.  This song had lots of acoustic guitard and lovely harmonies on the vocals.  Hmmm.  If so, they definitely know how to display their softer side as well!]

    I just can't pick one

I have a ton of favorite songs I love to listen to when Im reading a book. A song will come to mind as Im reading about the main characters. I love good good country music especially the love songs.

One is by Restless heart called Long Lost Friend.

Collin Raye has some wonderful love songs too.

John Berry is one of my favorites though.

    Your love amazes me

    JV

JV, you might also want to look for their album Three Sides to Every Story (well, the name of the album was something along those lines). There are some pretty songs there, too.

    Another one

I also love Dolly Parton's rendition of "I Will Always Love You".  Whitney's rendition is good, too, but Dolly's voice is just so sweet that it fits the selfless and sad tone of the song beautifully.

    My Favourite

My favourite song is 'Right here waiting' By Richard Marx. I love how this song packed with emotion.

My favorite is I'd Love To

My favorite is I'd Love To Lay You Down by Conway Twitty.

    Extreme

I never thought of them as heavy metal. To me heavy metal is like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath etc... I thought of them as hard rock. I though of a lot of the hair bands that came out in the 80's as hard rock because they also did these monster ballads. I also really like some of the ballads from Def Leppard like Love Bites, Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad, Two Steps Behind

    Hi Rachel!

What a fun post! I haven't consciously thought about a compilation while I write, but sometimes, since the only time I generally listen to music is after a couple of wines, a song will seem to snuggle in and fit the current wip. More often, it's the whole CD. I have listened to Chris Rea's Shamrock Diaries CD through the writing of a book, Strawpeople (old Kiwi group, very sexy) in another. Never Never Gonna Give you Up, esp by Barry White but Lisa Stansfield did a great rendition, is another sexy love song. Private Dancer by Tina Turner has nice memories for me and Switzerland. WinkAnd of course, there was good old Strauss.

But 'our' song is Can't Take my Eyes off You, Frankie Valli. I don't think I have correlated that to a book yet - and I don't think I will, if you don't mind. Some things you just gotta be greedy about!!

    My favorite love

    My favorite love songs:

    Wild Horses - Rolling Stones

Buffalo Tom - Late at Night

Fiona Apple - Never Is a Promise (tough to pick one song, cuz this is a great album)

Jayhawks - I'm Gonna Make You Love Me

    Juanes - Photographia (In spanish)

Nina Simone - I Loves You Porgy

The Andrew Sisters - Don't Sit Under The Apple Tree With Anyone Else But Me

Elvis Costello - I Want You

I could go on, but I'll stop there!

    LOVE this topic!!!!

I'm a music freak, and just reading over the previous posts helped me remember a few that I adore.

    AT LAST-Etta James

I'LL STILL BE LOVING YOU-Restless Heart (Sang at a wedding)

I MELT-Rascall Flatts (not really a 'love' song, but a great gettin' in the mood song IMHO)

I'LL GO ON LOVING YOU-Alan Jackson (another like the one above, but does have a 'forever' message)

THERE YOU ARE-Martina McBride (Sang at a wedding)

    I DO-Paul Brandt (Sang at a wedding)

KEEPER OF THE STARS-Tracy Byrd is great, too

These next 2 weren't released as singles, but are still AMAZING songs!

    THE NERVE-George Strait

I WAS BORN TO GIVE MY LOVE TO YOU-Martina McBride (I had played at my wedding.)

I was trying to think of other songs I've sang at weddings.  I've done IT'S YOUR LOVE by Tim and Faith someone mentioned earlier.  I've also done GROW OLD ALONG WITH ME (Mary Chapin Carpenter version), and I can't remember the others!  (I must not have felt they were memorable as a wedding song)

If I think of more, I'll be sure to let you know!!!!!

    Hugs,
    April

    Some great tunes!

Fabulous topic, Rachel, so much so that I'm off to hunt some of these tunes down.Wink

I love making a soundtrack and listen to it on my iPod on the walk back home from dropping the kids at school. It gets me in "the zone" for the day. I don't always find it easy choosing songs to fit moods, but some, like Hunters and Collectors' (an Aussie band!) "Throw Your Arms around Me" I could listen to every day and still get goosebumps!  "Fields of Gold" by Eva Cassidy is my current top pick for most romantic song.Smile

     Barb

    Great topic!

I've done soundtracks for a couple of books.

Probably my all time favorite romantic song is Van Morrison's You Don't Know Me. Just so much raw emotion. But Etta James's At Last is another favorite.

I had an Elvis version on the Claiming His Pregnant Bride soundtrack, so I'll probably have to wait a while again before I can use a different version on another soundtrack. It turns out you're not the only bizarre one, lol. I don't make a cd either. I used to load the songs onto my laptop and make a playlist and have that going, but I got an iPod for Christmas so now I'm using iTunes too. It's great because I can still use the songs from my cd collection but top them up with songs I buy. And I can move around the house with my nifty little iPod docking station and work on my laptop.

Movie soundtracks are great, aren't they? If you can get the tone to match, then they have a previously chosen list of songs that covers the happy and the angsty already.

    Hi Rachel

I usually work to music, but generally music that is non-music, if you know what I mean. The new agey stuff I would never have dreamed of working with in the background seems to be what works best for me now. That said, I've always enjoyed listening to Phil Collins when writing.

As far as fav songs go, I adore Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers. In my opinion, no one else does it so good, and yes, while it does evoke the sadness in Ghost (which is one of my all time favourite movies, ever!) it also evokes, for me at least, the sensuality of the couple and how in tune to one another they were. I love that.

And JV! Thank you! You've reminded me of so many gorgeous Bryan Adams tracks that I don't have yet on my music to write by list. I'm off to scour my CD towers now. Maybe a bit of Bryan is exactly what I need right now. Somehow writing with a head cold (ha, typed 'clod' first!) just isn't synonymous with SIlhouette Desire.

    Can't forget

Nat "King" Cole's duet with Natalie on "Unforgettable" and Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman"!
