The Billionaire Boss’s Secretary Bride by Helen Brooks

Harlequin Presents # 2743 ~ July 2008

.

Gina Leighton has worked for Breedon & Son since she finished University twelve years before. She’s worked herself up the company and was now the owner’s right hand. When Dave Breedon had a heart attack a year ago, his son Harry came home from America to take over during his recovery. And Gina’s world had changed. She’s fallen for the confirmed bachelor, and hard. So hard that she’s now compelled to leave the company and start again in London. Harry’s not one for committed relationships, and with the electricity that sparks when he enters the room, Gina knows that if she stays she’ll inevitably become a statistic. Harry Breedon doesn’t believe in love and generally lives his life in the moment. He’s done well for himself and has no desire to change his lifestyle to include a family of his own. And that’s why he’s always kept his hands off Gina; he knows she’s the all or nothing type girl. But knowing that doesn’t stop him from wanting her and trying to stop her from going to London. The three days spent together before Gina leaves, Harry begins to see himself through Gina’s eyes and what he sees he’s not too thrilled with.

This is an unusual Harlequin Presents, as there really isn’t any intense conflict. Three days before Gina moves to London, Harry decides he needs to convince her to stay. During these three days, Harry and Gina begin a journey of discovery. Both learn some home truths about each other and more importantly about themselves. Though we can feel their attraction, this book is not about their passion. One thing I’ve always admired about romances from Ms. Brook’s is how deftly she lets us see the hero’s internal conflict. And this book is very much about internal conflict. Gina’s because she’d love to have an affair with Harry but knows it will only lead to greater heartache. Harry ‘s because he can’t get rid of that feeling of his heart being squeezed and he doesn’t know what it all means. So if you’re looking for a fast paced intense confrontational Present, this is definitely not for you. But if you think you’ll enjoy seeing a confirmed bachelor work his way through to what he really wants, than this one is. This was a refreshing change from the more intense gut wrenching romances I tend to read.

Another one for the shopping cart...

I guess this'll be another one to add to my shopping cart and TBR.  Sounds like the kind of book I like.  Great Review.

Is this author an auto-buy for you?  Does she always write stories like this?  I may check out a few more from her when I place next month's order.

Helen Brooks ....

She's not really an autobuy author, though I have many of her books in my TBR ...... of the ones I have read, I've enjoyed them all

her's are not as fast paced as say Lynne Graham or Michelle Reid ... the stories are usually set in England, so they are not quite as exotic ... and her books are not as hot in the passion department, though her characters do have chemistry just don't usually do the deed until the end of the book ... as in this case

there's alot of internailzation in this book ... so some may find that slows down the pace of the book .... I actually enjoyed reading Harry's thoughts and how he comes to realize what he's about to lose forever   ... there's no real black moment in this one

sounds like another gem

that I need to add to the TBB list

I think...

I'm going to give this one a try.  I only recently read a HP that I enjoyed as I've steered clear of them in the past but this one sounds like one that may work for my tastes.

You sent me to this review, Katherine...

...from your blog with Vince, and so now I'm more curious than ever to read this one.  Thanks!

Now I Can't Wait to Read it!

Hi KatherineT:

As a former confirmed bachelor myself for 33 years, I can’t wait to see how the author constructs the hero's “soul-searching” mind. I’ll have something to compare it with. This seems like a book I cannot afford to miss. Sealed

           Thanks,

“Romances are the emotional vitamins of the soul.” Vince

for this book .... some will enjoy it very much while others I fear will hate it simply because it doesn't have the fast pacing and intensity one is used to from this line

Vince, I am definitely looking forward to your review .. and will have to keep my copy easily accessible for when you do

Yeaaaaaaaah.... I don't like that the hero and heroine can distance themselves from the passion, exercise restraint, and calmly avoid each other until marriage makes it's way onto the table of options.  Restraint isn't romantic for me personally.   I noticed this in her style 2 years ago, and haven't felt driven to pick up a book of hers since.  The intensity and passion is why I read Presents.

Then again, I have been a little dissatisfied with a few books were there is too casual an approach to sex... so I can understand how a book like this would be REFRESHING!  Maybe it's just what I need occasionally.

I don't mind a casual approach to sex sometimes!  I just want them to have sex, but have it be sex that is unique and meaningful, and faithful.  Is it conflicting for me to not be a prude and love the steam between the hero/heroine, but get uncomfortable when infidelity/adultery or casual sex with others (while flirting with the heroine) comes up?   I'd miss it if I switched to conservative books without wall-bangers or shower scenes.  *grin*
