This is a great story about a nurse who's lost her license, who ends up surviving Hurricane Katrina. She volunteers with an emergency medical team set up in the heart of the French Quarter, and there meets dedicated a dedicated doctor who goes to disaster sites a la Doctors Without Frontiers. The not-so-young heroine struggles with a lot of issues, including drinking. Becnel writes a powerful story about what the people of New Orleans went through in the aftermath of the hurricane. The only thing I would have wished for is that the heroine and hero would have communicated more about the topic of alcoholism. To me it seemed like everything was resolved with one conversation at the very end. It would have been more realistic for these two mature individuals who related so well on every other plane, to have more in-depth conversations during the course of the novel.
