This was my first Patricia Cornwell novel, and I was underwhelmed. My mom and some of my friends have raved about her. And of course she's always on bestseller lists. Perhaps I didn't start with the right book? Maybe I should have started earlier in Scarpetta's career? This one was done in 2003.
I could tell from listening to this book that a lot has already happened in Scarpetta's series - her relationship with Benton (and his subsequent...well you know if you've read the books and if you haven't I won't spoil it), Lucy's life changes, Scarpetta's own scandals - all of this was mentioned in the book. Cornwell has to do this for people like me who will pick up her series halfway through. She did a good enough job, but I did feel like I started with the wrong book.
The story was good enough that I finished listening to it (despite the last disc skipping during the climactic scene - darned library copy!). But I didn't adore this book. I listened to it while commuting, but not every day - there were some days I actually chose to listent to the radio over listening to this book. That's a sure sign for me that the book wasn't compelling enough.
Overall I would give this book a "good enough" rating.

It was...
somewhere around this book, maybe one earlier, when Patricia Cornwell went from being an author I raved about to one I have ultimately decided to quit reading. I highly recommend the first books that were written in first person but this one... eh... not so great. Not terrible, just not the same spark that had me raving early in her career.

Definitely not the right book to have started on as this was
the icing on the cake that I definitely didn't want to eat
I thought they were all excellent up to and including Black Notice,
The
Last Precinct was just too weird, then I also read Isle of Dogs
(different series) which was just not funny (IMO) and then Blowfly just
blew me in the wrong direction
I've bought Trace and it's sitting
in my TBR, I haven't bought any more, and yet I loved and bought and
read and reread all the ones from PostMortem through Black Notice
Try some of the earlier stuff and you'll have a much better idea why we all raved

Sadhbh...
I like that expression... the icing on the cake I didn't want to eat. Very true, too.

Hi Angela,
I have all of her earlier ones, I can bring them in for you to give her another try. I too was a huge fan until and up to about The Last Precinct.
