Book 25 - The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova

One book leads to another...

Well I started this one before we were given the challenge details i think so it's not linked to anythign else and since I need to catch up on Harlequin books, and am about to go on a Debbie Macomber kick, I probably won't be linking anything to this one. Unless one of my other library books i checked out and downloaded can link somehow.

Anyhow, how to explain this one? wow! Incredible book and I imagine it would have been even better if I ould have taken the time to focus exclusively on it and nothing else at the same time I was listening.

It starts off with a young girl, our narrator discovering an ancient book in her father's library and a pile of letters addressed to "my poor unfortunate successor." As she reads the letters she becomes aware of a quest for the truth of Vlad Tepes AKA Dracula, where his tomb is, and whether or not he is dead or undead. very quickly we discover he is a vampire and things take off from there.

Three different timelines are happening at once, the original quest of the narrator's father's mentor, Bartolomew Rossi as a young man, to find the tomb. He crosses Europe searching for answers and encountering many strange events and people, and a vampire's minions and coming close to solving the mystery.

Then the second timeline is when Rossi goes missing while Paul, the narrator's father is an advisee of Rossi at University. paul ten ges on a quest to find Rossi and meets the beautiful Helen who is as obsessed as Paul with finding answers, though initially for different reasons. Thes two also cross Europe on their quest, and find love while searching for answers.

The final timeline is when the young narrator finds a note from her father who has disappeared and she goes on a quest to find him, and the truth about Vlad.

All three stories intersect repeatedly throughout the book giving a vivid look at the strange story of Vlad Tepes and many people's searches for the secrets he jealously hides, killing just about anyone who crosses him.

So much history, so much imagery, three generations of romances all connected through tenuous threads of blood and knowledge.

So glad...

we read this one as it was definitely enjoyable!  I actually loved it a lot more this second go round as I didn't get so overwhelmed by all the historical details.
