THE BOOK OF NAMES by Jill Gregory & Karen Tintori (St. Martins)

End of the world thriller .....

SYNOPSIS: An accident in his teenage years forever changed David Shepherd.  Since then,  he has these random episodes and all he can envision are names, a seemingly endless series of names.  He's tracked the names in a journal, never realizing their importance.  And these names are important... and there are those willing to kill to get those names.

MY THOUGHTS:  I love a good end of the world thriller so it was with great anticipation that I started reading THE BOOK OF NAMES.  The scenario seemed ripe for a fantastic story... Jewish mysticism, a secret society and lists of names, and of course the prospect of the world ending if the right thing wasn't done.  Great action and a lot of surprises and twists made this book work on so many levels....

But... (and you knew there was a but coming, right?) I couldn't care one whit  about any of the characters or their happiness. The authors tried to make me care about David's stepdaughter, Stacy, but for some reason it didn't work.  I actually think the action and mysterious elements overwhelmed the character development as there was only so much that could be packed into the pages of the book.

This is not to say that THE BOOK OF NAMES wasn't enjoyable.  I enjoyed the twist on the conspiracy and found the details that made up the mystery behind the names to be fascinating.  So.... overall, a decent read.
