Books I want to read in 2008

I'm not sure how successful I'll be with finishing even a part of this list but I've selected a couple books (okay, 10) from my TBR piles that I want to read this year.

1.  SNOW FLOWER AND THE SECRET FAN by Lisa See.  Heard a lot of buzz about this book and want to know what it's about

2.  MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA by Arthur Golden  It's been in the stacks awhile.  Time to read it!

3.  OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon  Can you believe I bought this when it first came out in paperback and it's STILL in my stacks unread???  I've actually made a dent in it but I'm not sure I see why it has such a huge fan base.

4.  THE HISTORIAN by Elizabeth Kostova  I read half and enjoyed it and then the size overwhelmed me.  I want to finish it!!

5.  JONATHAN STRANGE AND MR. NORRELL by Susanna Clarke.  See #4

6.  THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL by Philippa  Gregory.  A lot of buzz on this book and I liked another book by the author so I want to read it

7.  FOUCALT'S PENDULUM by Umberto Eco.  I want to reread this one and see if I still love it as much as I did years ago.

8.  THE EIGHT by Katherine Neville.  It's been in the stacks awhile

9.  AZTEC by Gary Jennings.  Another one that has been in the stacks awhile

10.  THE MUSIC OF THE SPHERES by Elizabeth Redfern  Need I say it?  It's been in the stacks awhile! Laughing

Most of these books are rather large so we'll see how I do on this challenge to myself!

neat books

My dh is reading SNOW FLOWER AND THE SECRET FAN by Lisa See via audiobook now.  I initially bought this for me but he took it for a commute read.  It sounds so cool, I think I need a print version.  I adore THE EIGHT!  One of my all time favorites.  I too want to read JONATHAN STRANGE AND MR. NORRELL but the length gets e...not so much really except the Challenge makes me not go for books that long.  Adored the movie MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA but have not read the book...yet.

Deb - based on the books

Deb - based on the books above (many of which are also in my TBR), you should also try to throw in The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger if you have time (lol if your schedule is like mine).  It became an instant classic for me.  It is unlike anything else I have read and the only thing I didn't like was that it ended.

I have Memoirs of a Geisha

I have Memoirs of a Geisha in one of my piles of unread books too and haven't read it yet either. Maybe I should make a list like this too.

But that would break my system... ;)

#3 & #4

I loved both The Historian and Outlander(hopefully you'll be able to make a larger dent in both of theseSmile).  Fantastic reads!!  Looking forward to your reviews on all these books.

Thanks!

Thanks for all the encouragement, everyone!  I hope to make a bigger dent this time as well, Tammy!

I also have a copy of THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE.  Shoot, didn't think about that one when I was making the list or I might have bumped off one of the other books!!

Merri, I can't wait to hear what Glenn thinks of the book.  And I can't remember if I read THE EIGHT back when I read Umberto Eco's book.

Sarah, I may have set the goals way too high but cleaning out these books from my TBR shelves sure would be nice....  Laughing

Debbie's reading wants for 2008

some of the ones you have on there i want to do as well.

THE HISTORIAN by Elizabeth Kostova  I read half and enjoyed it and then the size overwhelmed me.  I want to finish it!!

JONATHAN STRANGE AND MR. NORRELL by Susanna Clarke.  See #4

THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL by Philippa  Gregory.  A lot of buzz on this book and I liked another book by the author so I want to read it

Maybe we can plan to space them out over the year and hit them a buddy reads. I think all but TOBG are available in audio which i how I'd want to do them.

Ones you want to read that i already did and my comments.

MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA by Arthur Golden  It's been in the stacks awhile.  Time to read it! - I didn't like this one. Isaw the movie first and actually liked the movie better if youcan belive that! I thought the book dragged WAY too long over some things and I just couldn't stand Sayuri where I liked her in the movie,

OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon  Can you believe I bought this when it first came out in paperback and it's STILL in my stacks unread???  I've actually made a dent in it but I'm not sure I see why it has such a huge fan base.  - I read Outlander back when it first came out and loved it! I inhaled the first 4. When book 5 came out i was turned off by the length of the book and put off reading a long time. When I finally did, i was disappointed as there was SOOO much editing that oculdn've been done to shorten it and make it a tighter story.

Buddy Reads...

Sure, we can space them out over the year as buddy reads!  I think I'm going to try THE HISTORIAN on audio as Merry swears it's wonderful.  Not sure if the Susanna Clarke one is available on audio but I can look~ or if not, the motivation to get it done will help!!

I am waiting on an audio of OUTLANDER as I'm going to try it that way and see if it works better for me on audio.  Either way, I'm determined to finish it!!  And I actually remember your review of MEMOIRS... not sure if I'll try reading the print version or listening to the audio as I know it's available in our library.  But either way, I want to get it off the shelf, you know?

I have Memoirs Of A Geisha

I have Memoirs Of A Geisha on my list as well.  I am hoping that I can get around to reading it sometime soon.

I have two of these

and have already read a third one (The Eight) which did less for me than I expected

I have the first four Diana Gabaldons in my TBR

I have Snow Flower and the Secret Fan which has just returned after a little trip, so I might get to it soon

Feeling
too tired from the bronchitis to get into deep thought books, though
there's often a lot more deep thought in category romance than
non-category romance readers realise.

Trying to find my way around the site is also taking a lot of energy I didn't necessarily have available

Don't
know whether I'll make a list of books I'd like to read in 2008, I
think I might just go with the flow like I did for the last two
years

Hope you feel better!

Hope  you get to feeling better, Sadhbh!  I have a nasty cold right now that just moved into my chest so I know what you mean about not having a lot of energy to play around here.  I'm getting ready to climb back into bed.  Maybe once the meds kick in, I'll want to do more.

WOO HOO!

One book read off the list as I finished THE HISTORIAN last night!!!  YAY!

Finishing a book off your list...

...is always such a wonderful, *freeing* feeling!
Congratulations Debbie... and my list... well suffice it to say the books are all still in place.  I'm going to have to think a little more deeply than I feel capable of right now.
Saturday mornings and I still wake up at 6 ... 'course the dog needs to go out as well.  We're each other's morning buddies!

bring Jo over to this entry

bring Jo over to this entry to see if there's any on here she wants to read too and we can make one our next buddy read. Though I still need to finish HIstorian and will probably want a break for a bit before doing another really long one!
