I had the same problem.  I really like Julie Kenner and was very disappointed with it.  I did not even bother with the sequel.

I listened to this one in audio and liked it. I'm reading California Demons the sequel now and while it was a bit slow in the beginning it's much better now. Sorry this one didn't work for you.
