The Casting Couch

kateI don’t know how other writers do it, but when I start a new book, I always have to audition a crowd of awesomely hot men from movies or television to get myself focused on my hero. That's just me. Wink

When I’m reading, I tend to do the same thing. The most meager description in a book will have me conjuring up some hottie I might’ve seen on TV last night who might have the same hair color or body type. (Of course, when I’m reading a Desire, I simply go by the cover photo because those guys are always so hot!)

My first book for Silhouette Desire features the CEO of a fantasy resorts development company who’s a billionaire—naturally! Alex is polished, sophisticated, ruthless, tall, dark and handsome—again, naturally! piercenic

But as I wrote it, I hadn’t seen the cover yet, so I had to run my own virtual casting call to find the perfect man for the role of Alex.

There were one or two who stood out from the crowd. Smile

Now, Alex has two brothers who own the company with him—and I’m hoping you’ll read their stories some day, too. And of course, I’ve been auditioning hot guys who might play the part.

It always helps to have inspiration, right?

redfordSo what do you think?

rockIs this guy Desire Hero worthy?                   How about that cute blond guy?

So I'm wondering ... Writers, do you tend to use the casting couch approach when dreaming up a hero?

And readers, do you find yourself glancing back at the Desire cover when you want to get a good look at the hero? Or do you cast your own dream man in the role?

Who’s on your casting couch?

Casting for Current WIP

Hey Kate! Wow... I'm liking your selections! I think you'd make an excellent casting director. Smile You know, it's funny because I don't usually cast for my hero when I'm writing a story... I just have a clear idea of what I think he should look like. But for this current WIP, I knew exactly whom I was basing the hero on before I even knew the storyline! That's just so foreign for me. LOL

Fun post!

Casting Couch?

Hmm!  Yours seems to be a little crowded, Kate.

I can hardly wait to read the book.

Not Usually

Hey Kate! I love your candidates. While I don't interview current hunks, I do have a visual of what my hero might look like and if I come a cross a pic on the internet or in a mag, I use that to stimulate my.......mind. :)

Hot times on the casting couch!

Hi Kate!

Love the post. And love your choices, too. Excellent taste in heroes!!

For me, they sort of slip up on me. the heroes, that is! I have a description of them in mind when I start, but their personalities are slower to build. I do watch old movies or tv programs to get ideas for quirks or whatever and eventually, a hero shows up! In the Desire I just finished writing, he ended up Dermot Mulroney......yum. Wonder if he'll bear any resemblance on the cover! Laughing

Maureen

Hi Kate

Great blog today!  I like to cast my heroes in my head. They always end up looking like a cross between Eddie Cibrian and Tim Daly to name a couple.   I like the tall, dark and handsome heroes, but when I've done continuities, they've been dark blonde.  My last hero looked like David Beckham.  Not bad!

I like The Rock and Pierce Brosnan too.  Hotties with attitude.  Kiss

Bold, rugged, passionate heroes and always REAL GOOD

Interesting choices... (grin)

For the most part I go by the description in the novel itself, and rarely picture a real person unless the author brings it up herself.

Now Dwayne is definitely a

Now Dwayne is definitely a good choice. I look at the cover to get a feel, but by the end of the book I've formed an image in my head of the characters.

Hi MIchele!

How amazing that you had the hero in your head before you even had the story! Now, that is one demanding man! I love that he showed up first. Sometimes that's all the inspiration you need, right?

Darn!

The very attractive photo of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau isn't showing up on my computer so just in case you can't see him either, here's a link. He's quite handsome, IMHO!

Yes, my casting couch is very busy! Wink But you know, the more the merrier! LOL

Casting couch!

Kate, you naughty wench! I wondered why the upholstery on the seat of the couch in the corner of the Bandita lair was starting to look a little worn and faded!

Actually that's pure envy talking!

Isn't it fun to be a writer and have all these gorgeous men running around in our minds? Although then I have to torture mine which I don't think says much for the health of my psyche.

I sometimes start with someone in the role, sometimes it's just a type. Whatever, he fairly quickly becomes his own man (as well as my heroine's!) and the original role model isn't so important any more. Erith, the hero of Tempt the Devil, started out looking like Bryan Ferry in the early 80s when I had a huge crush on him. He stayed looking like that although any resemblance between Julian and Erith in the finished product is purely coincidental and no animals were harmed in the making of that story!

Casting heroes

Hey, Kate! I love your choices and yes, I think Dwayne Johnson is Desire material. He was on Regis and Kelly not too long ago and he came across as a really nice guy. Oh, and today Simon Baker was on R&K! What a doll Smile

I don't use the casting couch for my heroes, they tend to pop into my head fully formed *g* But there are times when I'll base a physical trait on a certain actor such as eye color or build. Then I have an excuse to look up pictures of my favorite actors on the internet Wink

I'm looking forward to seeing the cover of the book you're talking about!

I am liking your choices!

I do not confuse the cover model with the hottie in the book. Invariably the hero inside the covers looks nothing like the cover, especially when the author is describing someone with blonde hair, or red hair, etc and the cover shows some totally opposite hair color. Wink

Hi Charlene!

I have to tell you, as soon as I saw the name "Tim" in your comment, I thought ... "Tim McGraw!" I know you love him and I'm a big fan, too! But Tim Daly is very good looking--and a good actor, too. Very funny.

And, uh, David Beckham, uh, yeah. Whew! Nice choice. Talk about a hottie with attitude! Wink

Hi azteclady

Thanks for coming by today! It's funny, when there's no photo of the couple on the cover, I'm fine with the author's description, but if there's a cover photo, I start thinking that's who the hero is. I can't help it. I think the power of suggestion is very strong and I'm easily swayed. Smile

Hi Nicolerko

It never would've occurred to me to consider Dwayne Johnson as hero material but I saw a video of him recently and ... wow. He is really good looking! And he seems like a great guy. So he went right onto my list!

It's La Campbell!

Greetings, Anna! Thank you so much for coming by today!

Gosh, I didn't think anyone would notice if I took over that lovely old sofa in the lower quandrant of the Lair. Hmm ... now everyone's going to want to participate in my little casting couch sessions. Ah well, as I said before, the more the merrier!

And I'm not such a naughty wench, young lady! You should talk! Nobody tortures their heroes like you do! But it's such fun to see them redeemed. Wink

Mmmm, Bryan Ferry was quite the dashing young man back in the day, wasn't he? Is it just me, or are most musicians inherently sexy anyway?

The lair

Kate, you know the lair is a hotbed...

Of gossip, I mean!

I must say I love a man who can sing.

eye candy

Hi kate, my boyfriend has that prime position as the hero. I do sometimes glance back at the cover, the men there are so gorgeous its hard not to. now as for your other question 'The Rock', is 100% cover worthy. Let me just say throw in Hugh Jackman and the heat goes up to 200%.

Hi Beth!

Thanks for traveling all the way over here from the Bandita Lair! I appreciate it!

I wish I'd seen DJ on R&K. And Simon Baker too! I recently started watching The Mentalist and love it, mostly because of him! I'm DVR'ing all the shows from now on!

How lucky that your heroes pop into your head fully formed. *g* I usually get a basic physical image of my guy in my head but then I feel like I could use some extra help bringing him to life, and that's when I turn to real life heroes and hunks for inspiration!

Casting Couch

My couch is SO crowded.  I ALWAYS cast my characters.  I have so much fun.  The characters usually end up morphing after I get started, but I love doing it at the beginning and getting a real feel for them.  It's like a touchstone I can refer to as I'm writing those first chapters.

Currently on my couch (as I'm writing 2 books at once right now) are Jamie Bamber and Michael Trucco - both from Battlestar Galactica actually.  I've also used Scott Foley, Max Martini, Jason Behr, Tahmoh Penikett and Jensen Ackles. Next up for me I think will be Peter Facinelli - Carlisle from Twilight.  :-)

I cast my heroines too but it's the heroes that really stick out...for obvious reasons.

Hi sheandeen!

It makes me crazy when the hero--or heroine--described in the book looks nothing like the cover photo! Really, I get confused! I thought he had black hair--but he's a blonde? Help! You'd think I would just stop looking at the cover, but no! I keep checking back to see if it's changed to the right color. LOL

LOL Anna!

Of course you meant Gossip! What else would the Lair be a hotbed for????

Snork!Cool

Hi Kate

Funny, I have that exact same pic of Redford on my cork board right now, teamed with a real nice pic of Audrey Tautou in a singlet and baggy trousers. Don't know what I'm doing with them but they seemed like a good fit.

I love it when you can see your hero so clearly. It doesn't seem to happen all the time. My first book was an old school friend, my second, a popular rugby guy, my 3rd wasn't clearly defined until 3/4 through the book, my 4th - Quinn, I found his face on the Loreal for men site and he was SO inspiring that his character seemed to march right off the screen and onto the pages. I somehow knew how he would speak/walk/think. I wish that happened every time because it made him quite easy to write. I tried but was unable to come up with a name for him so I could ogle more pics.Tongue out

I obviously don't watch enough TV because I don't know half the guys you are all talking about. Or maybe it's my age... But I have earmarked a guy from the pages of a magazine, advertising a fragrance for men. His name is Carter Osterhouse and I think he has/had some DIY or gardening show or something (in the US). He's quite yum...

Avi, you lucky girl!

You're lucky to have a hero for a boyfriend *and* lucky that you recognize it!

Ooh, almost included Hugh Jackman's photo but it was getting crowded up there! But yeah, he's on my list. And is it just my imagination or is he looking more buff than ever? Every news item* I see him in, he looks totally ripped and very awesome!

*And by "news item," I mean TMZ, my fave gossip show! Cool

Hi Donna!

Hey, your couch really is crowded! I can relate. It really is fun--and educational!--to run a virtual casting session.

And wow, two books at once? No wonder it's so crowded over there! LOL. A what a couch full of choices. They're like the hottest guys out there right now. Thanks, Donna! I'm adding to my list as we speak!Smile

Hi Kate

I remember spending a lot of time looking at pictures when I "cast" my first Desire and I still have a huge file of inspirational photos. One of my heroes totally popped into my head when I saw a pic of a polo player whose name escapes me (he did a lot of ads for a while). Since then I mostly just make them up in my head Cool

When the cover comes out it's fun to see how closely the artists image fits the picture in my mind. Sometimes it matches mine very closely, sometimes it's quite different.

As a reader if the guy on the cover lights my fire, then I'll picture him as the hero, if not, then I have no problem reinventing him in my mind Laughing

Hi Jan!

Isn't that shot of Robert Redford a classic? I love those early shots of him. He was gorgeous. I can imagine him with Audrey Tautou. She has such a beautiful, expressive face. They would make a very cute couple!

I really want to see that Loreal man who inspired you! *g*

I have an old boyfriend I used as a hero in an early manuscript. Talk about an alpha male! And sometimes I'll see a photo of a male model and hear him talking to me, so I can relate to what you're saying about the man marching right off the pages. That's exciting, isn't it!

I had to google Carter Oosterhouse but now I see what you mean! Very hot!

And I watch way too much television. LOL

Casting Couch for Male Writers

What an interesting Blog!

As a male author, I find the concept interesting and to be honest, I've never thought about it.  On reflection, I naturally create the famales more naturally.  However, I have to consciously create the heroes in my mind, since I am writting for a female audience and I know that what my readers what to see; a strong sexy hero.

So I create my own version of the casting couch and my heroes become a mixture of all the celebrities I know my readers would love.  Of coures, I just visualise the couch, I never hop on it.Laughing

Wayne

Hi Jen!

I have friends who create thick notebooks of photos and character studies and all sorts of things that go into writing their books. I wish I could be that organized. But I do keep computer folders of photos and useful websites for each book. That's the best I can do. *g*

I must say, I really enjoyed my casting sessions for this first Desire! Makes me want to write lots more. Wink

Hmm, I wonder who your polo player was. Those are some awesome athletes, aren't they?

Hi Wayne!

Well, now you've brought a fascinating new angle to this whole discussion! Thanks so much for commenting! It's always interesting to see things from the male POV.

And I confess, I never really hop onto that couch myself, either! We're talking virtual casting, right? LOL

casting couch

Hi Kate

I did like your choices, but for mine it would be Sean Connery or Harrison Ford; though usually I follow the descriptions in the book itself and adjust to my liking

Oh Diane ...

... I like your choices, too! Both Sean Connery and Harrison Ford are required on all hero lists, aren't they? Wink

Casting

Like many of the others, I start out with the cover image in mind.  Usually the hero morphs into his own personality and unique appearance in my mind by the end of the story, but I like to have a starter image in mind, and they usually still resemble the cover models for the most part but with a few twists after my imagination is done with them.   Also, I use the covers much later when I'm trying to pull out a book to re-read or lend, especially if I don't remember the exact name of the book.  That's part of the reason I find it distressing when the cover models look nothing like the descriptions inside.

Oh and good choices on your casting couch!  I loved Dermot Mulroony in The Wedding Date.

I love the casting process!

Hi Kate,

I do the same and cast my heroes and heroines. I like to plan ahead too - I've cast my next story already so I can get comfortable with them and they won't be strangers when I start writing.

My first hero - Damon - looks a lot like Richard Armitage (English actor), and I'm using Clive Owen for my current one.

I've loved all the ideas for future heroes in these comments! And Wayne, your perspective is really interesting - thanks for sharing.

Richard Armitage. Oh yummy!

Clive Owen too. And didn't Robert Redford get better looking with age? I too use delicious real life models to reflect upon as I write. Bedded by Blackmail was Gerard Butler (all my heroes have a little of Gerry in them). Andy Garcia was the inspiration for my hero in my September Desire release. But that's just where they start. Before too long they've taken on their own distinct look and personality. Yeah. We Desire writers have a pretty neat job Laughing

It's wierd, but I never thought of trying the casting couch! Usually my characters just start out as shadowy figures lurking in my mind, often I'll have an opening situation and then I start writing and things firm up as I go. Sometimes I'll retrospectively look at pictures to see if I can find someone close. But I'm really liking the concept of looking at pics and seeing who 'speaks' to you. I can totally see the Robert Redford, Audrey T (can't spell her last name) combination. Yay - another time soak!

Casting...

Oh yes, casting male leads is one of my favourite past times. I often find I keep stalling on a work in progress because I haven't got just the right 'look' for my guy of the moment. I'm starting a new series of stories now and thought I'd settled on one guy for my hero, and he didn't work, then I found another and he wasn't quite right but yesterday I came across another guy altogether (I tell, you, trawling male model websites, and people wonder why we prefer to write books over having a standard day job) and he's IT!

Strange, how each of the individual models worked for 'me' but didn't exactly work for the book in progress. I've already chosen his two brothers, for the two following books, but who knows. When I come to write their stories they may have to change too, although I hope not. Mr Book 2 is seriously gorgeous in a brooding dark and chiselled way. Kiss

I usually prefer not to use male actors as heroes in my books because, for me, they're already character/type cast from their movies, although I could be persuaded to change my mind for Hugh Jackman. Actually, I think he could persuade me to do a whole lot of things Wink!

Hi Kate

I generally look at the cover to get a look at the hero.  Then, as I'm reading, I'm thinking if the cover fits the character or not.  Sometimes, it's a perfect match!  Other times, my own dream man (usually Adrian Paul) gets cast in the role.
