Cat Wrangling Made Easy by Dusty Rainbolt (The Lyons Press 2008)

book coverBack Cover: Are you up to your eyeballs in dirty cat litter? Does the upholstery on your new couch resemble spaghetti? Has cat hair become a condiment in your house? The more cats you have, the more problems, right? Not necessarily, but multicat harmony sure does require a lot of planning, cleaning, discipline, and diplomacy. And no one knows this better than Dusty Rainbolt, an award-winning writer who has had as many as twenty of her own cats and fosters at one time. In Cat Wrangling Made Easy, Dusty covers everything you need to know - from dealing with multiple litter boxes, to feeding the herd, to understanding Felinese as a second language. Dusty also recommends the best products, all approved by the Rainbolt "test" kitties, which will help you through times of stress. Easy to use and illustrated throughout, and written with Dusty's characteristic humor and encouragement, this is the only book a multicat owner will ever need.

My Take: Very informative and useful book. I will definitely be keeping this book as a reference. I have owned cats my entire life and I learned alot from reading this book. From the nonverbal communication cats use, to the "bad" habits we want to break them of, I have been enlightened. I didn't know I wasn't supposed to be using disinfectant sprays or citrus-scented cleaners & air fresheners in kitty areas! Cats don't like them so don't use them in the litter box, or they might find somewhere else to do their business.  I figured my cats were "bad" if they were scratching the furniture, but it turns out this is natural cat behavior and it's up to me to give them a more appropriate alternative for them to "mark". I love that she recommends products that she has actually used in her own home with her own kitties, and explains why they're good. The book focuses on multicat homes, but I would recommend it to anyone with a single cat too. Very helpful & useful.
