Character Names vs Real Names

I was just reading a book review about a book called Just Like Candy.  I looking up more info on Amazon it turns out the heroine's name is Candy Cain.  In high school (god do I remember that far back) I knew a girl named Candy Land (real name).  I often feel parents have temporary insanity at time of birth.  I lived next to a couple named Diamond.  They were very very young when then got married and named their daughter Crystal.  Crystal Diamond.  That is why when I read some of the character names in these books I just shake my head in wonder.   Jayne Anne Krentz many times chooses very old fashioned names like Hermione, Augustus, or Cornelius - names your grand parents or great grand parents may have had.  I wonder where authors find names for their characters.

Names...

Hey Jeannie, I just commented on your comment to the post!
And you're right; sometimes I just wonder what the hey people are thinking... oh, right they're NOT thinking!  *sheesh*

I remember an article in the newspaper, oh a few years ago now, and some of the names that parents must have thought were "cute" or "fun"... guess they weren't thinking what would happen once their child got out into the real world, eh?
Jack Frost?  Peter Rabbit? (of course the fact that someone actually had the last name of 'Rabbit' is a little scary!)... and so on.
Candy Land?  Man oh man... I think that children saddled with names like that should sue their parents! Wink

Crazy Names

I remember watching the Arsenio Hall show many years ago, and his guest was Valerie Bertinelli....he was making fun of her, because her sons name is Wolfgang (Eddie Van Halens fave composer).....Arsenio said "if you dont like children, dont have them".

What I wanted to say,  great words for someone named Arsenio.

I once had a student withan embarrassing name

Her first name was normal, something like Debbie or Sandra. But her last name was Fuch. I pronounced it Foosh, assuming that her name was French in original. But she corrected me. The "u" is short and the "ch" is pronounced "ck". Try carrying that name around during highschool. *Sheesh*

more thoughts on crazy names

When I was a kid (waaay back when the earth cooled), I knew quite a few kids with wacky names.

My parents were friends with another couple, who had a bunch of girls....most of them had normal names, but then came the twins: Indy and Pendence (they were born on July 4). Most of the time Pendence was called Penny.

Another couple my parents were friends with had twin boys: Bruce and Wayne.

Other friends in school, had things or places for names, often with creative spelling:  Takeela, or Tewana.

A friend of mine has two girls named after Soap characters: Ashley (young and the restless) and Jillian (Ryans Hope).

In High School, there was Joan Collins and Betty Davis.

When I first heard of Actors Matt Dillon and Ed Norton, I thought it was a joke...those are ficticious names, right?

re: names

I knew a girl named Spring Storm, but I actually think that`s quite lovely.

I have a few friends with horrible initials...one girl`s initials are PMS (don`t know how her mother missed that one) and another`s are ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease).

Names that are a little too out there in books can drive me batty. It`s one thing to have invented names for a fantasy novel, or to have a heroine with an unsual name--those can be fun. But when every single character in a contemporary novel has a wacky name for no apparent reason...that just feels unrealistic and throws me out of the story.

(Is it wrong that I think Terri`s example of twin boys named Bruce and Wayne is...kind of awesome?)

The one that I'll never forget!

There was a guy in school whose name was Richard Stiff.  I'm sure ( I HOPE!) he went by Richard or Rick.  Could you imagine if he went by Dick? When you do the last name comma first name thing, that makes him Stiff, Dick.

How mortifying does THAT have to be???

It is crazy what some people will call their kids.

Terri, That is funny about Arsenio. Oh my goodness, Indy and Pendance? That is crazy but I do kind of like Bruce and Wayne. :)

Frenchie, I have met some people with that last name. It must be really hard to go through school with that name.

Jodie, I know of someone named Richard and his son is also the same but they go by Dick. One time my cousin was saying something about them and to be clear who she was talking about she said big Dick and we all started laughing. :0

There is this boy and, when he was little, I just thought he was the cutest little thing. Big brown eyes with long eyelashes. His name is Jean Luc and it just didn't fit to me. My cousin, a good friend of his parents, said to me that he is named for Captain Jean Luc Picard of Star Trek. Apparently, they are huge fans.

Names

It is amazing what some parents do to their children--I know of a pair of relatively recent criminals now in  jail by the names of Frank James and Jesse James---I jest not!  They are brothers and criminals---their last name was something else, I don't remember what, but their parents named them Frank James and Jesse James.

I know a girl named Candy Sweet, but that's her married last name, so can't blame the parents there.

I don't think some people think at all when naming their child---like nameing them after a criminal, or naming them something that sounds bad.

"You miss one hundred percent of the shots you never take." Wayne Gretzky

Or Sweet

Or naming your child Angel or Jesus and they're holy terrors. We had a student named Anus one year had to go by his middle name forgot what that was. We've had some really weird ones over the years. Treasure Trammell, Dallas & Denver Brown, Helja, Zilia makes me think of little worms. That's all I can think of now.

I once met a very talented Vietnamese artist whose name was Phuc Phun. I hope he changed it.

I went to school with a Kevin Kline and a James Mason.  I also worked with a Bill Murray.

And you are right ChrissieSue.  Foreign names are often a bit of a problem.  At a summer job once, I came across a gentleman named Fuk Ng.  That was a really tough one.

Names

Fantastic.... what a great response.  OK several others. I knew a quaker family who named their daughter Quintance.. she told everyone her name was Tansey. I was talking with a customer once and his first name was Baba and his last name was unpronouncible - he told me to call him Baba... very difficult conversation.  There was a boy I went to school with and I still don't know which if first name and which is last name - Bogart Seaman....

The Name Game

It always amazes me what people name their children.  There was some lady in the paper a while back who wanted to name her daughter As'hole and the e was pronounced EEEE.  The hospital refused to print her a birth ceritifcate and made her choose a different name!  LOL

If anyone used to watch The Man Show (my husband loved it), they did a segment on names.  One guy was named Jack Hoff.  Just sad that someone would do that to the poor kid.

My mom knew a girl in school who's name was Pat Pussy.  Could you imagine going through school with that name???

Being a travel agent, I see a LOT of weird names too.  Like Robert Roberts and William Williams.  Could you not come up with anything more unique than that?!?!?  I'll have to think back to some of the more unique ones.  I have spoke to a guy named Thankgod.  That's actually his first name.  For real.  No joke!  I guess it's very popular where he's from.

Well a friend of mine was working at a building supply store and he heard someone ask for Mike Hunt (sounds like.....).

I know in some countries, you cant just name your kid Mickey Mouse or Elvis Presley Jones, or just make something up.  The name has to mean something. Something besides Ima Hogg.

A friend of mine is named Paul LaGreca...but on the phone people think he is saying Paula Greca.

My grandma said she went to school with twin girls Ima and Ura Pigg (sp?).  I always thought she was joking, but after reading this... maybe not.

I like JAK's antiquated character names.  Of course, I always said I would name a boy Shethar... my family said it's a good thing I'm not having kids.  Maybe that says something about my taste level.

I had a friend who said she was tired of the same old names and was going to name her kids garbage pail and lampshade... .I was hoping the girl was lampshade. I actually knew a guy named Mike Hunt.  He was sensitive about it.  Another friend had a boyfriend named Jeff Darling.... he got teased a lot.

Oh my stars there are some strange people in this world...with some pretty sick sense of humours, when they name their children something that is going to cause them continuous embarassment and grief their entire lives.

I can only think of one set of names right now that stands out for me as being very unusual when i was growing up. Her name was Rose Flower and she was a couple years younger than i was.

My last name is Fields so I have to really think about the names when we have children.  I've always like the name Summer but I wouldn't want my child to be Summer Fields all her life!  Wink  But I could really have some fun with it if I wanted to.

We all had a good laugh over Ima and Ura Pig!

Shethar was a wise Persian

Shethar was a wise Persian prince (among others) who advised the King that married Esther in the Bible.  Plus, it means star and I just like the sound of it.  ::shrug::

No worries though, even if I did have kids I wouldn't torture them with names that would make their peers ridicule them.Smile

Gotta love it!

Funny this subject came up.  I was reading a letter someone wrote to a magazine (a parenting one, I think) and it was signed Summer Blizzard.  I'm really hoping she married into that.  Could you image?  I also saw in Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd this week, there is a girl named Spendrift Beck.  What kinda name is that?  Sad is, I don't remember the sport that put her their, just her name.

I don't remember too many strange names in school.  The only one I had trouble with was Huni Myers.  I just couldn't say "Hi Huni".  The toughest ones for the teachers was this girl original from Guam.  Her name is Chandinine Ramnarine.  Let me tell you how many times that was pronounced wrong.  Her cousin was luckier - her name was Pratima Lall.  They were real sweethearts - and I use to give all my romance novels to Chandinine.  She would have fit in well here.

There are a lot of baby books where they put in strange names in the front.  Mostly to warn people of what not to do.  People pick some crazy things.  They also put in names where it matches the profession they go into.  I always find those hilarious (i.e. Dr. Foot - podiatrist).

What an interesting topic.

What an interesting topic. lol I've always wondered about people's names. My mother's maiden name is Sweet. Always loved it. I think have one name a little cutsie or something is fine, but when you add a funky first name to an already funky last name, you've just gone too far.

I've gotten into reading baby name books, cause dh and I are on fertility drugs to get pregnant. I hate it because most of the names in those books are so wacky and different. Now, I don't want a name everyone else has, but I'd like to find names I can at least pronounce!

Some of these names you all have found are hilarious!

Be careful Tracey

Parents seem to have insanity at time of birth.  I work in a call center and some of the names I hear are..... interesting ..... to say the least.  Try to pick something that will not have others picking on them in school. Make sure the initials don't spell or sound something crazy ......   Good luck on the baby quest

naming pet peeve

Good Luck, Tracey!!

I have met people with names that made me wonder what their parents were thinking, but i can't think of any...Foot in mouth.

I did want to say that I have a pet peeve with writers that try too hard to name their characters something that really tells who exactly the character is, like if you have a sweet girl and name her Candy or a cold man and you give him the last name Winter.  I know it's supposed to be very literary to do so, but it seems too contrived to me and annoys me.  I have actually put books down because of thisSurprised

This is a fun thread.

My sister used to work with a guy named Richard Head, years ago. Everyone called him Dick for short. lol.  We always wondered what on earth his parents were thinking when they named him.

As an mortgage underwriter I come across a lot of unusual names, but for some reason the one that's stuck in my head all this time is a stripped named (legal name, btw) Amanda Love.  *g*

Then last year a good friend of mine was telling me about some friends of hers who'd recently had a baby boy.  His first name was something plain like John, but his middle name was 'Danger',  They did that just so when he grew up he could say 'Danger is my middle name.' lol. Stupid, but funny.

Reminds Me

Vanessa reminded me of a name.  When I worked at the podiatry college, there were these sisters that came in.  Their names were True Love and Holy Love.  I thought I was seeing things.  These women were probably in their 70's too.

I bet all of us knows of a family with names all starting witht he same letter (either w/or withou the parents).  I'm included in that.  My girls and I are all "A's".  It wouldn't have been if I'd had boys though.  Also, my mom had a cousin named Patricia, who married Patrick, and then named their son and daughter after each other.  Can you imagine?  You say "Hi Pat" and 4 heads turn.

Tracey - best of luck to you.  I never went thru that, but it took me almost 18 months to get pregnant w/my second.  This after only taking a month w/my first.  I'm sure you'll find the right name.  I understand you're need to be different but not strange.  My oldest is named Aurora.  Just about everyone has heard the name, but it will never make the top 100.

I know a guy who has 3 sisters named Maria.

They live in El Salvador, and I guess the custom of alot of Catholic/Latino families is to name their children with Biblical names.

They are named Maria Cruz, Maria Elena, Maria (something I dont remember). They are all called by their middile names.

His name is  Manuel (Emmanuel).

as far as celebrity names go: Suri, Rumor, scout, Apple.....I say why?

I believe this is a Catholic custom.  I know a family where all the girls are named Mary.  Mary Katherine,  Mary Anne and Mary Elizabeth.  They are called by their middle names.  And funny, my date for Senior Prom was John Johnson.  He was so cute, I never really thought about how funny his name was at that time.   25 years later, I see the humor!

OMG

I'm a police dispatcher so I see a ton of names every day.  I have zillions of them saved just because you wouldn't believe it if you didn't see it with your own two eyes.  Seriously, I've seen names like Delicious Peters, Sir Lancelot (first name), and about a zillion more that probably aren't appropriate to print.  Then of course there is the client that my cousin has whose daughter's name was Female (pronounced Fe-mall-ee).  When my cousin said, "what an interesting name, how did you come up with it" the woman stared at her rather blankly and said, "I didn't, they named her at the hospital".  True story and a little sad, I think.  Hopefully they'll shorten in to Molly for the kid's sake!

Oh, and I forgot to mention...initials.  You have to be careful with those.  My first and middle names start with A and S.  NO big deal until I married a guy whose last name also began with S.  Nice, Huh?

Speaking of initials.....

My mom drilled into us that we really needed to watch initials when we named our children.  My brother was going to be named Benjamin Scott but his initials would have been B.S. so she forgot that name combo real fast!  My brother went on to name my adorable nephew Ashton and his initials are A. S. S.  *shakes head*  I would really love to name a girl Madeline but her initials would be M. F.  Not so obvious on that one but we'll see.
