This is the first book in Cassandra Clare's Mortal Instruments series, published by Simon Pulse.
It begins when Clary Fray sees a murder that no one else can see. Suddenly she's swept into a world of demons, magic, danger and Shadowhunters...and she learns she's one of them, specially gifted to kill demons and keep the mortal world safe from harm. Guided by reluctant hero Jace Wayland and with her best friend Simon sticking by her side, Clary must learn the truth about who she is and just what she can do before it's too late.
That is basically a sucky summary of an amazing book. Cassandra has built a rich, vivid world that draws you in and makes you wish you never had to leave. This author is a terrrific find for anyone who enjoys YA fantasy romance. The romance in this one has a terrific dark twist that's going to carry through all three books--and it better have a good ending!!! Or I may have to hunt down Ms. Clare...not that I wouldn't want to meet her anyway... If you like Stephenie Meyer, check this one out.
