The first book in The Mortal Instruments series, I found this a compelling debut. Though there were times of explanations about the way the world worked, it was balanced by lots of action and discovery as Clary struggled to figure why her mom has been kidnapped and what the connection to a mysterious past and abilities were all about. An interesting cast of characters and I’m very torn about the secret revealed about Jace’s background. It made it memorable, but I’m hoping there is some way around it as well. I’m very curious to find out what happens next. (MTH)
