Where in the world are YOU? Here's your chance to put yourself on the eHarlequin.com Community map and show the world just how many of us book-loving, romance-reading, author-hugging members there really are!
Click HERE to go to our Google Maps page and from there follow these simple instructions to add your name and location to the Community Map.
First you'll need to sign in with a Google Account, then click on the Edit button. In the top left-hand corner of the Google Maps page you'll find a little blue marker that looks like a balloon with a black dot in it. Click and drag that marker to your location on the world map. Once you've dropped the marker, a small window will open (see right) for you to add your profile information. Type your Community ID into the Title box, then switch the view to rich text and enter the following, just insert your community ID instead of mine...eg <Jayne's> profile at eHarlequin.com. Link that line of text to your profile page at eHarlequin.com by inserting that URL with the 'link' icon (looks like a small chain) This is the same icon we use in our community to add links, so it should be familiar.
Once you've finished, click on OK to complete your entry.
Let's put ourselves on the MAP!

well, i tried
I figured it was a neat idea. A new window opened showing the map, but I don't have the option to 'edit', so can't put my little blue balloon down
Lynne
The map
came up but nothing I could click on to edit. I tried too so maybe someone can work the kinks out. Neat idea though.

You MIGHT not be looking in the right spot for the edit button, I see that a few members have managed to add their locations to the map. You'll find the edit button next the the description of the map on the right...

Nope
your screen shot shows 'map / edit / ?. In the same spot, my screen shows blocks with the words:
Traffic More Map Satellite Terrain
And none of them has an edit feature.
I'm using internet explorer, but I even opened up Firefox and the screen was exactly the same.
When I look, it shows only you and Marilyn have posted your balloons.
Lynne
Nope
Not only do I not see an edit button anywhere on the map right, left, top, or bottom, but I also don't see anyone except you and Marilyn on the map.

OK it finally worked. I have a google ID already but I had to sign in and then go to the map by way of Jayne's link instead of the other way around.

I didn't get the edit button until I'd signed in to google
and then I got all the stuff in that screen shot in Jayne's post just above this one.

I don't have the same side
I don't have the same side bar as you do Jayne. I see Penni got her spot added but I'm not getting any of the stuff you said we should see. I'm going to add a screen shot to this message so you can see EXACTLY what i see. Hopefully it will work since it has to be sizeable so you can see it more clearly.
As you can see, there is NO edit button anywhere in here.

Jayne, some of us are
Jayne, some of us are missing everything between the Google banner and the line just below says Get Directions and My Maps. Then where you have the edit button we have 1/2 inch white space and then "Community Members..." and descriptive paragraph.
How many of us experiencing this problem are using either a Mac, or Safari?
Me.
LOL--Kelly posted a picture of what I was trying to describe! Yeah, Kelly.

Google Account needed?
Nancy could be a browser issue, or it occurs to me that you may have to have a Google account to do this? The good news is THAT is free :-)

Did it!
Saw Penn's comment that she had to log into google.
See on the top right of the screen above the map, it says sign in? Click on it - if you don't already have a google id, it didn't ask for anything but your email and a password, and it doesn't seem to have added the google toolbar or anything I didn't want.
Then, I opened the link from Jayne's post, signed in, and had the edit button so I could add my spot. Zoomed in nice and close and clicked on the right street and everything. So neat!

My fellow Mac users,
I use Firefox as my browser. DH prefers Safari, but Safari wasn't supported at eHarlequin.com (I don't know if it is now or not since I never really changed back to Safari). So anyway, I am on my Mac (running 10.4.11) using Firefox (3.0.10) and signed in to Google. And that's how I got to where I could see an edit screen.
But I'm not sure my link is working. I'm going to worry about that tomorrow.

No one else can write your book but you. If you don't write it, it won't get written - Marian Keyes
Hi all - I'm first in Europe
I'm fascinated by the (lack of) detail for the US towns - I went to zoom in on a particular member and even in the highest resolution there are whole blocks of big towns that have no detail, whereas if you were to zoom in on me to the highest resolution, that's where I live. Now maybe that's because the person I looked at didn't want to give that much detail, and I can understand that one, no problem at all, in this age of stalkers, but I got the impression that the detail just isn't there - maybe I'm wrong
Apparently Google Earth puts increasingly finer detail in an area depending on the number of hits the inhabitants make, and given that DH has put our little village on the map, maybe that's why I can pinpoint the area so exactly - the brother checked and there are areas of London that are given in far less detail.
So could you check for your own address (even if you move yourself away afterwards) and let me know how detailed your area is, as this enquiring mind would like to know

Jayne--you might want to add "Sign In" to google as the first direction. The edit button doesn't even pop up until I did that. After that, it was easy. But for the longest time, I was scratching my head and wondering...

I'm in
I added my balloon. I did enjoy zooming in and finding my exact address, but I didn't put the marker there. I located myself right in the hockey rink at Cornell. I like it there.
I also was able to guess a few of the nearby balloons including Rae and Nancy!
Very cool, Jayne!

Detail
I zoomed in as close as I could - for my pin - the street map is accurate, but can't see much more detail beyond that - but the park behind my house is clearly marked, and it looks like there are some house numbers on the street that are right.
Donna - you need to zoom in closer - you put your pin in the Atlantic Ocean.
Are we the only ones on the board in this area I wonder??

Hey Michelle - you're another one who likes a watery habitat
- must make it awkward at times for keeping the flour dry
Things are looking very interesting
Aunt Cheryl - not seeing state lines very clearly, you're slightly west of North Carolina from where I'm standing, north of Happy Valley
Something very weird is going on about who's done the updating, but it's great fun and very interesting

I use this google map and the little baloons to show our congregation where the church blog hits come from but that's just a paper map I print off from stat counter.
This is the real definition of interactive and I love it!!! Can I blog about it.... pretty please with maple syrup on top?
When I first looked at the map, I didn't see a balloon in the upper left. I closed off, reloaded, re-read your instructions, then noticed the EDIT button to the immediate left of the map. No problem after that.
I'm using Explorer 8.

I could have set my balloon right on the roof of my house--it comes in pretty close. So I deliberately moved the balloon several miles northwest. I was uncomfortable having it that close to my real house. LOL

I just found my balloon out
I just found my balloon out in the middle of the atlantic! Now I am not sleeping well tonight, but I would think I would notice all that water around me! I moved my balloon back onto dry land in inadvertently dropped it into a field across and down the road a few tenths of a mile. I wonder if I will stay put or go wandering off again. LOL

In the Middle of a field....
I didn't realize that if you clicked on Satelite it'd show you streets and stuff in real time. While I was no where near my house, I was close enough that it slightly freaked me out, so following Ellen Hartman I put myself in one of my favorite places--Heinz Field. It was a toss-up though. I debated on putting myself at the Mellon Arena, but since they're supposed to tear it down and build a new Hockey Rink, I'll reside at Heinz Field for now. It's new.

Road trip to Barbados
You know what's fun? Asking Google Maps to figure out directions to other Community members. It would take approximately 23 hours for me to drive from Harlequin Head Office to Penn's location, longer if I stopped at Rae's for a pick-me-up. Don't you all just feel SO sorry for that little dot in the Caribbean that is Wayne? I think we all need to plot a Google way to visit him, don't you?
