A Cool Survey About eBooks -- Your eBook Reading and Buying Habits

Next month (Feb '09), there is a conference in NYC called The Tools Of Change (TOC) For Publishing. Some of what they will discuss is eBooks! For one of the workshops, they'd like to know what we readers think!!

So, here's a link to the survey that they've created -- which they've called "Smart Women Read eBooks" !! Isn't that great of them? Let me know if you complete it and if it generates any thoughts that you'd like to share here or in the eBook Discussion Forum.

I did the survey

Interesting, especially the question about 'brown bag' effect, I commented that if that is the case, then publishers should change the cover images in order to attract more readers.  Could it be the cover images caused a lot of people making that sweeping comment 'trashy romance novels'?

And I commented that it would be great that publishers make some out-of-print books available in ebook.

I completed it

It was a very nice, balanced survey I thought.

My main reasons were convenience, and my only real crit was ebooks at HARDCOVER prices. I find that ridiculous.

Although I have not read

Although I have not read many ebooks, I went ahead and took the survey. The biggest barrier for me is the ridiculous high price of an ebook. If I can't have the wonderful tactile experience of holding a book in my hand there would have to be a significant reason for me to purchase an ebook. Obtaining it earlier is not sufficient. But if I was able to obtain it early and I felt I was getting a bargain--that would tip the scale--then I would buy more ebooks.

BTW, congrats on becoming our new digital media host. I can't think of a better person for the job!

Well,

Nancy, you made me grin, you're obviously very passionate about this, but the reason would be the story inside, right? That's what people pay for, hopefully, more than packaging. Authors, editors, art, etc all still have to be paid for their work on the book, and packaging is only part of what you pay for (and this is new packaging -- it requires computers, programmers, etc so the cost on the publishing side is still there).

So while I agree that I would never pay hardcover prices for a book, any book, I would, and do, actually, pay the same for an ebook as I would for a paperback, since it's really more about the story than the medium. Though I also listed my reason as convenience because I like how quickly I can get them, even at midnight on a Sunday, :) and I don't keep books, or very few, so having the electronic bookshelf is perfect for me.

I hear...

what you are saying, Sam, but since the debacle at Fictionwise... well, I don't want my bookshelf dependent on someone else's technology so price IS a factor for me.  It's just nice that there are formats to fit everyone's needs. Having said that, there are a great number of ebook authors who are ebook only that I enjoy reading.  I'll check out the survey.

I am so not in the loop! LOL

What's Fictionwise and what was the debacle?

I have only bought ebooks here and at BoB, so I am relatively unaware of the other marketers. I wish Amazon or B&N would supply other formats, but maybe someday...

Tammy

Sam, I understand that

Sam, I understand that author's need to and should get paid for their work, but once the file has been created why should the publisher and programmer get paid the same amount over and over again. Do they need to be paid something? Yes, but obviously I'm missing something. Wink

And for me there is nothing like having a book in my hands. I could probably get used to reading from an electronic device that allows me to bump up the font size and produces its own light. So, I can see an there is a case for reading electronically. Price is still a barrier.

Nancy

January's Member of the Month

It's a mystery to me

How pay scales work, but I assume as people are paid by salary, not by project (authors are paid per project, obviously, but someone who works on production isn't paid per book, because they are probably working on a lot of books at once). There's so much to it, so many people who work to create a book, it's hard to know for sure, I think. I certainly can't account for it all, but equally, I know there are discussions "out there" why royalties are not higher for e-books as they are from e-book publishers, who pay something like 30% instead of 6%, but again, I have no idea how it all works, and on some level it gives me a headache thinking about it. I just write. *G* Maybe Penn knows. I think Lorie or someone may have explained it a long time ago, these questions/thoughts have been around for a while.

I think everyone should buy what they want for their own reasons, and thank goodness we have so many options!

I'll go check out that Fictionwise thing, thanks,

Sam

I took the survey...it was kinda fun!

On Fictionwise:  I think Fictionwise is one of the best places to buy ebooks, I have been with them for over over 6 yrs.  Not all ebook companies maintain a bookshelf for you to re-download your ebooks as many times as you need to.  I had 201 ebooks expiring (which does not mean that my ebooks will not be able to be read any longer, just that I wont be able to re-download tham as needed), with 189 of them being replaced so far thanks to Fictionwise.  Not many companies would take the time to do something like that.  I, for one, am quite impressed with their efforts.  When you buy from Fictionwise, they guarantee on your receipt that they will maintain your ebook links for as long as three months....but I can still re-download the first ebooks I ever bought from them, including ones they no longer sell.  This is the first time something like this has ever happened since I have been a customer there.  ANd seeing how they have managed the Overdrive issue, I will definitely continue buying my favorite Harlequin ebooks from themSmile

Take Care,

Tammy

Meant to add...

You said, "I could probably get used to reading from an electronic device that
allows me to bump up the font size and produces its own light."

My Axim does this with Mobi books -- I can also set the backgound and text color, as well as size and font, so I can read, for instance, off-white text against a black background, which is what I use if I am reading in the dark (when dh is sleeping). Otherwise, the white background and black text work fine. Nice thing is, you can pick some up still NIB on ebay (Dell doesn't make them anymore, but I bought mine new on ebay and find it very reliable), for half the cost of a Kindle or other readers. You can also write on them (I have a regular sized BT keyboard that works great, no teeny keyboard), do email, check the web, and change the screen to landscape, so the lines are longer.. I use mine for reading and for writing away from the house. Lorie H turned me on to them, and Tawny Weber loved hers, too, so I ended up buying one and have to agree. I got the newest one they make, new, and it cost me about $225 with shipping, and then I bought the keyboard for $80, but everyone might not need that.

Fictionwise...

It's not that I think they handled it badly but rather that I just cannot bear the thought of my books being at the mercy of technology.  I had a flash drive crash and it scared me although luckily I'd backed up all the ebooks.  Plus, the lack of portability from one device to another just frustrates me to no end!  It's my book if I bought it, darn it, and I ought to be able to read it on anyone's computer!  Sorry, it's a pet peeve of mine... but anyway, my point with fictionwise was merely to point out the danger of relying on someone else for the books, not to downgrade fictionwise.

Hey Debi!

Hey Debi,

I totally understand...and I have heard a lot of stories where folks have lost their ebooks, and I absolutely agree with you, it is not fair...because we pay a very fair price for the files.

As far as portability goes, have you tried the Ereader software yet?  That one does not require any third party activation, nor does it require PID's that are linked to devices.   It does require your credit card to "unlock" the file, and you can then unlock it on as many devices as you need to,  but I understand not everyone has a credit card to do that.

Take Care,

Tammy

Took the survey

sent them my two cents worth but I love my Kindle and it makes reading so much easier on my tired eyes. I still buy print books for my collections but I love having 20 books to choose from in my purse at any time. Great when you go out of town and you can take one small device instead of a suitcase of books. The ebooks at Amazon are cheaper for the Kindle so I do like that.

I took the survey too!

It was very good.  I loved the comment about women using them to "brown bag" their book selections from others.  Ha!  When I'm using my Sony eReader, I have more people coming over to see what I'm doing.  If I'm reading erotica, I've got it down to a 2 finger switch to jump over to a mainstream suspense!  Even on a plane (it was half empty), the flight attendant sat down beside me and asked to look at it!

With the Sony, I like that all the books are downloaded as a library database on my computer - I wouldn't be comfortable with someone else in control of my library.

Penn - congrats on your new position!  You'll be great!

Nope, I don't know anything about that.  A credit card isn't a problem for me.  Tell me more!

And yes, Penn, I definitely put my thoughts in the survey! LOL!!  They didn't have to ask me twice to give my opinion! Wink

Lol, Debi!

What else would you like to know?  If you are interested, best thing I would suggest is for you to download and try it.  You can get more info here:

There is a download link on that page as well.  And some free books to try it out with are here:

Let me know if you end up trying it out.  Also, while the Harlequin ebook boutique doesn't sell the ebooks in Ereader format, Fictionwise does have the Harlequin imprints available in Ereader.  Not sure why Harlequin doesn't??

Is that he Sony, or the software? Mobi does the same thing for me with the Axim -- I have the books on the Axim, on my laptop, and on the store shelf.

ebook survey

I took the survey, and now I'm kicking myself, because I forgot one thing thats has been a pet peeve.  I'm perfectly willing to pay the same price for an ebook as the print version, mainly for the convenience.  I've run out of space for print books, but can't stop buying.  But why can't I buy in Canadian dollars anywhere?  Why do I have to buy in USD and have my credit card company charge the rate of exchange plus a surcharge!  So far, that has been my biggest frustration - that and the fact that some websites don't even bother to advise what curreny their prices are in.  I bought a Sony reader, mainly because it got such good reviews here in the Harlequin Community, and because it was the only one I could find that I could look at and play with before shelling out that kind of money.  But Sony's website doesn't even list the currency - and I assume they are in the US as well as Canada, so I've probably paid USD for the books I bought there.

Lynne

Lynne and Debi,

Lynne, I hadn't thought of that point at all. While Harlequin is not a sponsor of the survey, I know that at least one of their employees will be at the conference, so I will include your comments in my weekly report to Jayne, and hopefully your point will be brought up in February.

Debi, Let me know if you try eReader and if there are any quirks I should be warned about. I was shopping for some eBooks for dh (at another site) and some of them were only available in eReader format. It might actually work better for us, but I didn't have time to read the details. I'm constrained on what I can use b/c of being a Macintosh family, but it looks like eReader might work better than what we've been using, at least for some things.

Sam,

When I purchased the Sony Reader, the sofware install creates the library.  From the library, I access the Sony Bookstore website and if I purchase it automatically downloads into a folder in my library.  From there, I can move it around into folders and/or transfer to the Sony Reader.  When I purchase Harlequin ebooks or borrow from the library, I just import the book from the Digital Editions folder into the library and then move onto the Sony Reader.  On both the library and the reader, I can create folders so I can keep the genres separate for easy finds, esp on the Reader.  And to protect my privacy over books, I use code names for some folders ie Spice for Harlequin Spice or any of the racier books I purchase, rather than the title Erotica.  I wouldn't want my mother to faint!

Sounds pretty much the same

As what I do with my Mobi Library and my Axim. I download the book to my laptop, and then just synch the Axim and transfer the books there -- it just sort of created its own library on both, and I never really thought twice about it. LOL on changing the names. ;)

I never thought about the Canadian prices thing, either -- are the servers etc where the books are sold from in the US? I thought online pricing had to do with geography? But then again, New York, for instance, is making its residents pay tax now on any online purchases -- none of the states around us do, but the state is say it's based on the consumer's location, because we are located here when we buy it, regardless of where the item we are buying is located.

I took the survey

I use Mobipocket and eReader on my Palm TX (PDA). I like the color options on Mobipocket and the Harlequin covers show in full color and now full screen. I like the serif fonts on eReader. The eReader I use on my Mac (mostly for reference books) is really cool. Lots of settings. Looks like a book on the screen. When I down load a book I save it on my computer's HD before loading it on my Palm. I plan to burn a CD for extra back up.

eReader software is now available for iPhone and iPod Touch http://www.ereader.com/

My concern, that I posted on the survey, is what the future holds. Will I still be able to re read a favorite book twenty years from now? We've seen music and video go through so many different formats and become obsolete in a few years, what about our eBooks?

"Whether you think you can or think you can't…you're right." ~Henry Ford

I just took the survey too

I just took the survey too and my comment was about DRM. I hate that stuff. As for what I use I too like my Axim. I bought mine new from Dell just before they came out with the X51 series and paid as much as you would for a Kindle. I use mine for more than just books so it pays for itself.Smile I use both Microsoft reader and Mobi's free version and both give me a library with books on both cards. I love the fact I can carry so many books around with me (nearly 100) and I get more from Project Gutenberg as they add older authors I like. Like others I doubt they will believe how many books I read a month but I spend time at work reading while waiting for the phone to ring. Maybe this survey will wake up some of the publishing houses that don't think ebooks are really viable. Some just don't get that if you price too high no one will buy the books and they are building their own failure for ebooks..

Hey, all,

Tammy, yes, I will pass on the request that the secure eReader be added to the eBoutique.

Chrissie, I'm glad that you thought to remind them of our concerns about whether or not we'll be able to read our books in 20 years. We've discussed it before in the eBook forum, but I didn't think to mention it when I did the survey.

Tigermobil, have I mentioned that it's good to see you again?! Just sayin'. And you know, if publishing houses don't think that eBooks are viable, they just need to come to lunch sometime with my book lover friends and me. We can tell them all about how the first ones who read eBooks got the others to try it, and then we were hooked. Some of us will always prefer print as our first choice, but sometimes the eBook format is a better choice for what's going on in our lives, and we'll do whatever we need to in order to get our reads in.

Thanks for responding everyone!

Ebook

I just finished the survey, and I have to confess I am addicted to ebooks. When my boyfriend bought me my Ipod Touch the first thing I did was upload ebooks. I usually keep about 60+ books on my Ipod for easy reading on the go.

For me, the brown bag factor is well true. While a great number of my  ebooks are classics (think Edgar A. Poe, Emily Dickenson, Charles Eastman, etc) or light hearted romance like Harlequins I tend to read a lot of more risque ebooks,(Cora Zane, Cassandra Curtis, Rachelle Le Monnier, etc.).

ereader...

I've downloaded it and started on getting some of the free ebooks to try.  Once I do that (maybe tomorrow since football is on), I'll post an update in the other section on ebooks.  So far, downloading it was super easy.

ereader

Glad you found it easy today Debbie.

I tried, because I really really want a book at Fictionwise that isn't in .pdf or sony reader format, but it completes my Jo Beverley library  and I've been looking for about 2 yrs now in the UBS's, with no luck!  So I downloaded their free book to use as a test.  Then, to activate my ereader account, it wouldn't take my personal/home email address.  I had to put in my work one, which meant I had to log into my work email account to retrieve the activation code.  Then it wouldn't activate.  Not particularly patient today, so I'll try again later.  Or maybe not, becuase I doubt I'll be able to get it into my sony library, so would be stuck reading it on my PC, which is shared with my DH.

Then again, I'm going to California for 7-10 days in April with my husband.  We'll fly into San Francisco, or maybe San Diego (he hasn't decided yet) and then drive to LA, and fly home from there.  He's well aware he has to let me go book shopping.  Maybe I'll find it used after flying from Nova Scotia to California!   DH works for Air Canada and goes every year or two, but its the first time I'll have gone.

Lynne

And then I got stuck...

I'll post at the ebook forum but I've gotten stuck and I'm not patient enough to play with it further right now.

Because I had mentioned

Because I had mentioned project gutenberg I went there to see if anything new had been posted on a couple of favorite authors. I was really surprised to find they now have audio books as well as text books.Laughing Should have guessed the folks over there would be up to date on what folks like.

I'm glad they are doing

I'm glad they are doing this survey. I love eBooks as much as my iPod! I only have so much actual bookshelf space in my house and digital books make things easier (not to mention slightly more eco-friendly.) Not to say I don't love the feel of a book in my hand, it's just not that practical for some people. :) I'm looking forward to purchasing a Kindle from Amazon soon.

As for the brown bag question, I can see how eBooks are great for people that are shy. I know I sometimes get a 'little' embarrassed if there is a really cute guy at the checkout at Barnes and Noble. I just remind myself that there isn't anything to be ashamed of. :)

My Portfolio: kristinaleigh.com

"You are my life now." - Edward, Twilight

I enjoy Ebooks.... However

I too do not enjoy the price that comes with them.  You have to hunt for the good deals so you get the best value.  In my opinion, since ebooks involve using less resources like paper and ink, the lower cost to the public should be a given.

I enjoy using Microsoft Reader and Adobe to read ebooks.  Since I am on my laptop often, it's an easy way to get a read in, not to mention increasing the fonts for easier reading.  I have a thumbdrive keychain that's labeled for easy storage of ebooks and they are backed up along with other computer info, so I don't worry about losing them.

Fifty years from now, I don't know if those measures will help me out since media is ever changing.  One can hope.  Out of habit, my favorite books, the ones I can read over and over again, I generally buy so they are always on my bookshelf.  Better safe than sorry because if Tears of The Moon or Garden In The Rain ever stopped printing and my thumbdrives were obsolete it would really hurt my feelings to know I could never enjoy those stories again.

EReader is awesome

Hi all, totally new around here this is actually my first post on H but had to jump in.

I have a 16g iPod and I ADORE EReader!  Its totally easy, awesome, you get rewards with each purchase that you can put towards your next purchase, and I have never had an issue with one single download.  The software is free (available in your iPod apps store) at least if memory serves me right it is - no its not the first time I would be wrong *G*.  I love it and now typically purchase all of my books in this form.  I am obsessed with my iPod and  now with EReader as well.  Its quick and it doesnt cost me a trip to the store either.  Besides the fact that I can visit any time of day or night and pick up a new book, the same cannot be said for a barnes & noble trip.

I would highly suggest it to anyone interested in a new format.  I have recently tried out Adobe Digital Editions and while its ok, its not as easy as grabbing my iPod Touch, swiping a finger, and going about searching my library for a good read.

On another note, I dont particularly care for Fictionwise..  I find the website horrid to look at much less get around.  The EReader website is well put together and nicely set up.  Being a programmer/ website designer that puts a big plus on my list for EReader as well.

Bailey and Kerri and Kelley,

Bailey,

I think we all need to shop around in this economy. eBooks being new, they're pretty cost-intensive right now -- they have a lot of costs that we don't see. I can't remember them all, but each type (eReader, Adobe, MobiPocket) has to be reformatted, secured, checked, so there's those costs, plus a number of other behind-the-scenes things. And since it's all new, it's like so many technologies that are more expensive when they first come out. (For example, the cost per GB of memory on the new iPods is about half of what I paid, when you break it down that way. Or DVD players -- they were out for several years before I could afford to buy one, and now they're really cheap.)

I know that the eBookstores I frequent often have sales or coupons, so I guess my advice to you is to pay attention to the emails they send you with sale/coupon info.  Just out of curiousity, do you read just on your computer, or do you also have a handheld device that you read on?

Welcome Kerri!

I hope you'll stop by our eBook discussion thread and mark it as one of your "favourites" so that you can help other community members who are new to eBooks and/or eReader and/or the iTouch . . . help us get them addicted, all that good stuff. Wink If you do audio books, too, we have a discussion thread for those, too.

Kelley! Thank you for welcoming Kerri! (Kerri, you'll find that the eHarlequin.com community members are a friendly bunch.)

Hand Held Penn

No, I don't have any type of hand held device, only my desktop and laptop.  My laptop is like a loved handbag, it goes where I go, so more often than not, I find myself reading with my laptop. I have thought of buying something hand held, but I worry that something handheld will be have such a smaller print than I am use to.

change the font size on most of the ereaders. That's why I love mine so much, it's so much easier to read from.

I love eBooks. I think because they enable me to combine two of my favorite things: reading & my ultra sweet laptop.
