Susannh has come to Seattle in response to a telegram telling her that her best friend has died and left an infaant that she wants Susannah to care for. When she arrives and meets the widower Aubrey Fairgrieve she discovers he didn't send the telegram. She settles into his house to look after the baby who at 4 months has yet to be named. She discovers that the marriage was not all that her friend had written her there were major problems and the friend was as much to blame as anyone for them. Aubrey finally proposes to her not b ecause he loves her but he needs ahostess and a mother for the baby Victoria She r efuses first then does marry him but sets the challenge of love Therea re many little side stories going on in this one as usual from Ms Miller a terrific read
