Dark Lover by JR Ward

  • Dark Lover by JR Ward
  • Signet Eclipse 2005
  • Rating - Wonderful, Excellent, One of the best ever!
  • Warning - This book has some pretty violent moments

This is a re-read for me and I still loved it.  If you haven't read this series I suggest starting at the beginning and working your way through.  If it wasn't for the challenge last year I may have never worked myself up to reading them.  And I am so glad that I did.  They are just THAT good.

Book Blurb - The only purebred vampire left on the planet, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But when one of his most trusted fighters is killed- orphaning a half-breed daughter unaware of her heritage or her fate - Wrath must usher the beautiful female into the world of the undead…

Racked by a restlessness in her body that wasn't there before, Beth Randall is helpless against the dangerously sexy man who comes to her at night with shadows in his eyes. His tales of brotherhood and blood frighten her. But his touch ignites a dawning hunger that threatens to consume them both…

I just love....

this series..Cool

Black Dagger Brotherhood Series

You're right, Jillyan. It's a great series. I'm eagerly awaiting the next book. Still thinking about how things played out in Vishous's book. I felt a little ripped off in places for the heroine's sake with that one. I actually read right back through the series and then read V's book a second time to see if I felt any different about it, but still a bit ambivalent about the depth of focus he had on his heroine in places. I guess maybe I wanted him to be as mad over her as Rhage was over Mary (great fantasy when the hero loves the sound of the heroine's voice, after all Wink). But V was a different kind of hero and I think his book was in character for him.

Certainly a thought provoking series, anyway.

focus, what exactly didn't you like, would you have preferred him to be more focussed or just wish his focus were diffferently expressed?

I don't think he could have been more focussed, I think he was as turned on by her intelligence and her medical expertise as Rhage was by Mary's voice. What I love about JR Ward's work is that the Brothers are all so different and that when she's writing about V, I don't lose the thread and wonder if it's Z's book or Rhage's book. I think I appreciate each of the brothers more because of his differences and the different descriptions and not in spite of them

also ambivalent

about Vishous and his relationship with Jane.  I feel that their relationship wasn't as developed as some of the other ones.  There was a lot more division and expansion of some of the sub-plots, which detracted somewhat from Vishous' developing romance.  Also I'm not sure how I feel about the ending...

What exactly?

Sadhbh, there were times in the story where I felt the focus needed to be more tightly on Vishous and Jane's core development. One scene that comes to mind is the one in which V needed to get Butch better while V himself was still in bed trying to recouperate from wounds and Jane was watching over him as his surgeon. I felt Jane was pushed to the background too much in that scene, an observer emotionally as well as literally while the V/Butch relationship played out to its next level. I guess it was just a sense of it not being as indepth and focused a story about the core couple as some of the other books were. But having said that, I still really enjoyed it. I've enjoyed all the books to date and can't wait for the next one. JR Ward is hugely talented. It's a pleasure to read her work.

Jennie - your response fascinates me

because I actually saw that scene as being extremely important in
the V/Jane core development. It wasn't directly about her and V, but
she was very involved in it (from my pov) and I though it played a
major role in their development. I took that aspect so much for granted
that, as my question indicated, I didn't feel any ambivalence and so
needed you to explain yours. It must be extremely frustrating for an
author to think she's conveying something clearly and for two separate
readers to get different messages from the same scene.

Gwen - I think we'll have more glimpses of Jane and V in subsequent books and
that's how their relationship will develop. Most of the development in
the other Brothers' relationships is spread over the books as a series,
with Butch's being an exception simply because he and Marissa came
together in the space of a year. From a logical pov, Jane and V can't
have come on as far when they've only known each other about a month by
the end of the book.

Further thoughts...

I agree with Jennie that Jane was left out in that scene, but I loved it anyway because of the further glimpse of the relationship between Vishous and Butch, which I find so compelling.  Also, the development of the relationship between the other Brothers and their mates was not really spread out.  Bella and Zsadist had met in a previous book, but their prior relationship consisted of one meeting before she was kidnapped. The same was true between Marissa and Butch, except that they may have had one or two additional run-ins.

Interpretation

It's really interesting how readers can draw different things from a scene, or even a book overall. I'm looking forward to the next book, and the next, and the next. Don't want this series to end!

Oh I'm with you on that Jennie...

this series could go on indefinitely and it would end too soon for me.
And I've found myself re-reading the entire series a LOT more than I even re-read other favourites.
I also have to admit that this is the first series ~ or the first books ever ~ where I actually bought a second set to keep separate.  I love my books, but I don't usually worry about them.  These, on the other hand.  there's just something about them....

And now that I've shown just how much of an obsessed fan-girl that I am....  Embarassed

I just read this book last

I just read this book last week and I absolutely loved it.  I loved it so much that I had to order the rest of the books in this series. I have Lover Revealed but I wanted to wait to read the series in order.  I cannot wait to read the rest of the series.  I can say after reading one book from this series I am hooked Smile

Fan girl

I think we can officially say I'm a fan girl of this series, too. I'm planning to get my (late twenties) niece hooked on them soon. I've already converted her to paranormal romance via Christine Feehan's Carpathian and Ghostwalker series. Mwahahahaha.

KathyK

I had to go out and buy a new copy of Dark Lover because I bought the first one used and the first chapter was falling out.  I could NOT have that.  I did give the first copy away hoping to hook a fellow reader.  <evil grin>  I totally get the needing to buy an extra set.  I saw some of them in hardback on eBay.  I'm thinking about upgrading.

It's rare for me to ever

It's rare for me to ever follow a series as far as i have this one...and i have nooo desire to see it end yet...so that says alot i think.

I also have an extra set of books to this series put away. That's a first for me also.
