Dawn's Awakening by Lora Leigh (Berkley Sensation, 2008)

A novel of the Feline Breeds. I looked on Amazon, and there appear to be other Breeds books out there by this author, but with slightly different series names (e.g. Coyote Breeds).

Please be aware that this series deals with difficult issues, like kidnapping, physical and psychological torture, and rape.

While I generally liked this series, the writing was often confusing and sometimes (to be frank) the sex got in the way of the story, instead of being a part of the story. Also, of the three books I’ve read by this author (Harmony’s Way, Tanner’s Scheme, and this one), the heroines were all strong women with deeply painful pasts, while the heros were strong men who had virtually no weaknesses at all. While there’s nothing wrong with using the same character type over and over again, even within one series (and especially when the plots are so well-defined and written), I was uncomfortably reminded of Christine Feehan’s Carpathian novels, where the women and men are all the same from one book to another…and so are the plots.

Still, these weren’t bad at all. Some of the secondary characters are quite intriguing, and I’m looking forward to the next book (Mercury’s War). In fact, I might pick up some of the other Breeds novels, since characters from those were mentioned in this series.

My rating: 2.5/5

From the cover:
“The runt of the lab she was created in, Dawn Daniels endured years of torture by her pride brother and the Council soldiers. Finally freed from her torment, she’s now a Breed Enforcer, in control of her own life. Then she’s assigned to protect the one man destined to be her mate—and realizes it’s far too easy to lose total control.

“One of the Breeds’ most important supporters, Seth Lawrence has spent years trying to forget Dawn, knowing that her lost innocence has made it impossible for her to get close to anyone. But suddenly neither of them can find the strength to fight the overwhelming passion between them. At least until the most brutal tormentor from Dawn’s past reappears—and threatens to destroy their newfound love, along with their lives…”

I love this author

As you know, the new Feline breeds are Megan's Mark, Harmany's Way, Tanner's Scheme and Dawn's Awakening. They evolve out with the politics of the Breeds and the genetic council  I went to the author's husbands site www.dreamsbynight.com and ordered her older ones and she has a chronology up on her site. She said they were written over 4 different publishers so there were gaps.  Tempting the Beast is the story of Callan Lyons and Merinus Tyler which is before they created Sanctuary and is when Dawn was very young and Dayan was still alive.  Great series/ great explicit sex.

Breeds vs Feline Breeds

Originally when I wrote these reviews, I had listed them as being book such-and-such of the Feline Breeds series, and then I saw other books from other Breeds series reviewed on here, and those were also referred to as being part of the Feline Breeds series (when I was pretty sure they weren't). So, to avoid confusion, I just put "Feline Breeds". But thanks for the web site tip!
